Dash, blink, leap : Mobility in League of Legends
Recently on the boards, I've seen a lot of people complaining about mobility in Champion kits, since the lastest champions and reworks Riot added to the game have mobility in some way.
has a ground-targeted dash with her Ultimate, Killer Instinct.
has her Q, Bladesurge, which works pretty much like a Yasuo E, except that you can't Q again if the unit you targeted didn't die.
has his E, Phantom Undertow, which is a direction-targeted dash.
has his E, Umbral Dash, which is direction-targeted, just like Pyke. ( Yes, I'm mentionning him even though his dash is very, very small )
has the 2nd part of her E which she can use to either get close to an enemy she marked or get back to her shroud after going in with, let's say, her R. Her ultimate is also a dash.
I understand why people are frustrated with mobility : every newest rework and champion has it in their kit.
"Why does Riot always give mobility to champions and reworks, lately? " some of you might be wondering.
I don't think mobility is a trend right now. Why would I say that, even though the lastest champions and reworks added in the game have at least some form mobility in their kit?
Because I'm gonna make a list which will include each and every champion having a dash, showcasing how many champions, new or old, have mobility.
Note that I won't list mobility coming out of a Champion's passive, such as
,
,
and more. Abilities granting movement speed in any shape or form won't be listed either. ( thinking about Kayn's E and Kai'Sa's E. )
There will be a list for each "class" of Champion :
- Fighters
- Controllers
- Mages
- Marksmen
- Slayers
- Specialists
- Tanks
Before heading into this massive thread, here's some vocabulary that I will be using a lot. You can skip it and come back to it once you've seen it below if you're not sure of the exact meaning.
##Dash : A dash is a type of champion ability in League of Legends that causes the caster to move to a specified destination, direction or to a specified unit by moving them through the space between the caster's location and the point, maximum range of the ability or the target unit, respectively.
All abilities that involve changing the location of the user via direct transit are classified as dashes, even ones that visually appear to be 'jumps', or utilize movement through the air - the game engine does not take into account the height of a unit so jumping units are considered to be on the ground for the purposes of skillshots and the like.
##Auto-targeted : Auto-targeting is a targeting paradigm for abilities that does not require any targeting input from the user upon activation; instead, they, as their name suggests, automatically select one or more valid targets in range or a valid area of effect when they are activated.
There are three subcategories for autotargeting: full autotargeting uses the targeting type exclusively and requires no direct input from the user whatsoever, semi-autotargeting requires an initial input upon cast but a portion of the ability will autotarget itself afterwards using the selected area or enemy as an anchor, and self-targeting is its own category due to its prevalence as a special case of auto-targeting.
##Direction-targeted : Direction-targeting is a targeting paradigm in League of Legends that specifies that abilities using it require an input direction to be used. The term skillshot is often used to refer to projectile-based direction-targeted abilities, such as Ezreal's Mystic Shot.
Where this targeting type is differentiated from ground-targeting is that these abilities interact with the entire length of the ability's range, rather than a** specified destination within range**. Most direction-targeted abilities have effects the travel along a line of effect (in the case of projectiles and dashes), and these may interact with each applicable unit hit (referred to as pass-through effects) or with only the first unit hit (collision effects). However, some direction-targeted abilities will affect the entire area at once (predominantly cones). A direction-targeted ability does not need to originate from the caster, as with the case of Orianna's Command Attack. Whether or not a direction-targeted ability deals area of effect (such as Lissandra's Ice Shard) does not affect the targeting classification.
Direction-targeted abilities are divided into subsets based on the scope of the area of effect they occupy. Almost all direction-targeted abilities in League of Legends are of a linear (rectangular, the ones often referred to as skill shots) or conic shape with the only known exceptions Diana's Crescent Strike, which is curved, and Galio's Winds of War, which is ring-shaped. A few abilities may be combinations of both where two or more linear skillshots are combined to form a cone, such as Ashe's Volley.
##Ground-targeted : Ground-targeting is a targeting paradigm in League of Legends which requires abilities utilizing it to specify a target location within range before being used, with the crux of the spell centering at this location.
Ground-targeting is separated into subsets of being movement and non-movement related. Ground-targeted movement spells are either blinks or dashes that move the caster to the new location, usually dealing any damage and effects when they arrive. Non-movement spells are traditional casts that do not move the caster in any way and are instead projectile-based or instantaneous in nature.
##Unit-targeted : Unit-targeting is the most basic targeting paradigm an ability can have - abilities using this targeting type require a valid target to cast on within range. What constitutes a 'valid' target varies from spell to spell.
Certain spells should not be confused as having the alternate targeting paradigm self-targeting - some abilities have the user as just one of the potential valid targets instead of the only one.
#Fighters
Also known as Bruisers, they are short-ranged Champions who thrive on extended fights but their range puts them at constant risk of being kited by their opponents via Crowd Control, range and mobility.
Fighters have two sub-classes : Divers and Juggernauts.
##Divers
Divers are the more mobile portion of the Fighter class. Divers excel at singling out high-priority targets to blitz toward, immediately forcing those targets (and their teammates) to deal with the diver’s presence. Divers are not as durable as the tanks or juggernauts of the world, but Divers can take their fair share of punishment while bringing enough damage to be a real kill threat if left unchecked. ##Juggernauts
Juggernauts are melee titans who relentlessly march down the opposition and devastate those foolish enough to get within their grasp. They are the only subclass who excel at both dealing and taking significant amounts of damage, but in turn they have a tough time closing in on targets due to their low range and extremely limited mobility._ ( via Lol wiki )_

#Controllers
Controllers assist their allies with potent utility and keep enemies at bay with crowd control. Supports typically start out by assisting the marksman in lane, as their own power is less dependent on items to function well, but over time their contribution expands as they lend aid to their entire team with both their spells and effective, yet affordable, items. ( via Lol wiki )
Controllers have two sub-classes : Catchers and Enchanters.
##Catchers
Catchers specialize in locking down opponents or, in some cases, entire battlefields by creating intense zones of threat that only foolish enemies would dare wade through. Although not as reliant on their friends as Enchanters, the fragile and immobile Catchers greatly benefit from allied presence - both to deter incoming danger and to help capitalize on targets they've locked down. #Mages
Mages are champions who typically possess great reach, ability-based area of effect damage and crowd control, and who use all of these strengths in tandem with each other to trap and destroy enemies from a distance. Specializing in magic damage, often burst damage, and therefore investing heavily in items that allow them to cast stronger and faster spells, mages excel at chaining their abilities together in powerful combos in order to win fights, though their abilities also tend to be difficult to land and can be mitigated, if not avoided completely, by their targets if they react in time. ( via Lol wiki )
Mages have three sub-classes : Artillery, Battlemages and Burst.
##Artillery
Artillery Mages are the masters of range, and they leverage that advantage to whittle down their opponents over time from great distances. In turn, Artillery Mages are severely punished when enemies finally succeed in closing in on them, due to their extreme fragility and limited mobility. ( via Lol wiki )
has a unit-targeted dash with his Q with his Mercury Hammer, To the Skies!
https://i.imgur.com/RzhvNFD.png[/img]
##Battlemages
Battlemages (also known as Warlocks) get into the middle of the fray, seeking to wreak havoc upon the entire enemy team with their overwhelming sustained area damage. Due to their relatively short (but not melee) combat ranges and the need to burn down their opponents over time, Battle Mages have significant defensive capabilities that range from sustaining endlessly to literally defying death for a short period of time. ##Burst
Burst Mages aim to single out vulnerable targets by locking them down and following up with a devastating barrage of damage from range. Burst Mages struggle heavily against beefier targets who can shrug off their initial spike of damage. ( via Lol wiki )

#Marksmen
Marksmen are ranged champions whose power almost exclusively revolves around their basic attacks: using their reach to land massive continuous damage from a distance, marksmen are capable of taking down even the toughest of opponents when positioned behind the safety of their team, and excel at securing map objectives such as Dragon, Baron Nashor and turrets. #Slayers
Slayers are highly mobile champions specializing in single-target burst damage. What they generally lack in resilience, they more than make up for in their potential to cover large distances, quickly kill priority targets and retreat just as fast. Epitomizing a high-risk, high-reward playstyle, assassins are natural opportunists, and prefer to strike when their targets are alone and vulnerable, rather than engage them in a direct assault, favoring damage-oriented item builds to capitalize the most on their offensive capabilities.0 ( via Lol wiki )
Slayers have two sub-classes : Assassins and Skirmishers.
##Assassins
Assassins specialize in infiltrating enemy lines with their unrivaled mobility to quickly dispatch high-priority targets. Due to their mostly melee nature, Assassins must put them themselves into dangerous positions in order to execute their targets. Luckily, they often have defensive tricks up their sleeves that, if used cleverly, allow them to effectively avoid incoming damage. ( via Lol wiki )

##Skirmishers
Skirmishers ( also known as Duelists ) aim to shred through any nearby enemy that approaches. Because Skirmishers lack high-end burst damage or reliable ways of closing in on high-priority targets, they are instead armed with situationally powerful defensive tools to survive in the fray, along with extreme sustained damage to cut down even the most durable targets. #Specialists
Specialists are a diverse group of champions who do not "fit into a neat little box" in regards to other class/subclass specifications. The majority of these champions were once part of other sub-classes but were reclassified in the V7.10 update, including a large number of champions from the former Zoner subclass of Controller. As a consequence, many Specialists exhibit "zone control" either as a dominant or secondary attribute, including many of the pre-7.10 Specialists. ( via Lol wiki )

#Tanks
Tanks are tough melee champions who sacrifice damage in exchange for powerful crowd control. While able to engage enemies in combat, a tank's purpose isn't usually to kill opponents; rather, tanks excel at disrupting enemies and diverting focus to themselves, allowing them to lock down specific targets (or several targets at once), as well as remove (or peel) threats from their allies. ( via Lol wiki )
Tanks have two sub-classes : Vanguards and** Wardens**.
##Vanguards
Vanguards are offensive tanks. Vanguards lead the charge for their team and are specialize at getting action started. Their explosive team fight initiation seeks to catch enemies out of position while allowing allies to follow-up to devastating effect. ( via Lol wiki )

On a total of 141 Champions, League of Legends has 63 who possess at least one dash in their kit. ( all the Champions I listed above )
That means 78 Champions don't have a dash in their kit, but I didn't list Champions whose passive grants movement speed or Champions with abilities granting movement speed.
For instance :
's passive grants him movement speed each time he crits, and if he builds attack speed, it will raise the movement speed granted by his crits.
's E grants him movement speed and allows him to pass through terrain. As the Shadow Assassin, the movement speed granted by your E is even greater.
( I listed Kayn because he technically has dashes, however small they are, but didn't list his E )
This means that even though some Champions don't have a dash, they can have some kind of mobility from other sources, though it doesn't make them mobile.
There is also the fact that the Reworked Champions such as
,
and
had mobilty in their kit.
Why are people upset when they see their new mobility tools? Riot didn't remove something, they changed it.
Anyways. I've done this thread in order to show that mobility is present in every class. I don't know why mobility is such an issue right now since a lot of champions were already pretty mobile.
I mean, look at our boy
. Mobility is his middle name. Talon Mobility Du Couteau.
Heck yea. :D
