Rod of Ages on Singed? Worth the gold, or just a waste of space?

Hello there!

I am a relatively new fan, and having been playing lots of games with the mad chemist! After a little experimentation, I have started building as my first item almost every game. In my mind, this lets me be slightly beefier, with increased mana and AP as a bonus. True, it leaves me without
slow passive, or burn, but I feel the extra health and mana early help offset that, and help me get through laning easier especially against poke opponents, like or .

Is this a silly logic that I am following? Should I just be rushing defensive boots, then either or followed by something like or for the speed as well as health/armor/mana?

Just looking for opinions or advice from more seasoned singed players on what they think!
