[Poll] Tear or ROA, which do you prefer?

Both mana items have their uses and niches, here are some pros and cons with them, feel free to add your two cents here if I missed anything or if you think otherwise: Edit: I forgot to add both as an option, try to pick your favorite anyways

Tear/Arch Angels' Staff/Seraphic Embrace: Pros:

  • Your early game mana problems are easily taken care of
  • 750 Gold is a lot a cheaper of a mana burn fix than ROA
  • Gives 1,000 mana when fully stacked and has a shield
  • Ryze married it

Cons:

  • Building a tear in the lanning phase does hardly anything for keeping up the tempo and sets you back 750 gold initially, it helps with farming but not so much with trading
  • A barrier can be nice, but it doesn't help for the rest of the time when it is on CD, you will be a lot more squishier
  • It takes a significant amount of time to stack a tear/arch angel, but it is a bit faster when you complete the arch angel staff
  • The item build/path is clunky and horrible, yes the 750 gold isn't too much of a big jump, but you have to then build a needlessly large rod and then another 1,100 gold to boot to combine the items, those are big jumps when keeping up with the enemy
  • Ryze married it

Rod of Ages Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • Item build/path is very fluid and easy to keep up with the enemy, you can build a blasting rod first and still have some ap to fight back or bits and pieces based on your needs
  • Catalyst helps you stay in lane longer
  • It is gold efficient, you take care of your mana issues when fully stacked (+800 mana), you get a chunk of HP (+500 HP), and you have one of the biggest base AP items in the game (+120 AP)
  • You don't need to do anything to stack it other than wait, it will stack by itself in a set amount of time of 10 minutes

Cons:

  • You can't start stacking ROA until you complete it, which is a lot longer down the road than tear
  • While it is gold efficient, it is not item slot efficient, an Seraphic Embrace + Rylais offers much better stats and passives on the table in the long run for two item slots, but ROA offers a bunch of stats that are nice but you can get from other sources that were mentioned but these just offer raw number stats while the other combination offers a lot more bang for your buck (such as grievous wounds, the many slows from Rylais, more AP with Seraphic Embrace with a shield, Liandry's Burns, Zhonyas, etc). The point is you burn a slot that you could have had a lot more nifty gadgets in it for gold efficiency
  • It takes 10 minutes to stack, if you are an early game monster, you will be hindered for a while. It also acts like mejais when if you are really behind and complete it really late, it will be really hard to make any use of it for a long time
  • Passive is useless after level 18

So that is my two cents on the two ways to solve your mana issues, what are you preferences?

Both.

Darn it I forgot to add that in the poll

gettng both is rather greedy, as it really needs a long time to scale up.

It is, but in some cases it isn't the worst idea in the world, primarily Ryze and sometimes Kassadin can benefit from both, but yeah you would be giving up a lot of item slots for two of them.

well yea, ryze unfortunatly can afford to be greedy, as broken as he is currently - on kassa you need too long to really scale in most games anyway, so it´s rarly worth it. I think swain and the occasssional midlane karth/soraka can get away with it aswell at times...though it´s always rather an odd (delayed) snowball build if you have the upper hand form the get go than anything else.

If you plan on being a hyper carry, then it's the best. Basically a must build path for Ryze, since he scales off the mana. And I usually prefer building this on Karthus as well.

Although, if you don't need the copious amounts of mana, or don't plan on using mana scaling. You could substitute the RoA for a Crystal Scepter. That would give you more Immediate stats, while allowing you to chase down anyone your trying to kill.

that´s just the issue...if you really have to carry the game you mostly need your powerspike sometime between 20 and 30minutes to start turning teamfights around - and an AA+Voidstaff or morellos+rabadons is just a lot more dmg at that point than a stacking RoA+an unfinished seraphs. So you´ll only get away with it if your team can carry you through 30-40min of the game.

really depends on the champ/setup...rushing AA is a good option for a solid early dmg-spike and a very strong lategame, Roa is better in the midgame.

depends on champion

if you get both you get tear then rush roa then get archangel staff after a bit.

I personally prefer RoA. I like forgetting I have the item. And if I happen to lane bully, such as with Anivia(maxing E is the way to go), I have to option to go Blasting Wand instead of just...mana.

In a world there i have time to scale up, both, right now, non as morellos into damage is far superior to the scaleing approach. given the sniwbally, short games. With a exeption for some tanks top like mao or naut, roa is great on them.
