Strategy: Is Lucian viable Top Lane?

First off, here me out.

We already have Marksman that moon-light in other Lanes. Graves was even reworked to ensure he was viable as a Jungle and Kindred was made specifically to Jungle. Ezreal, Corki and Kog' Maw have been in and out of the Mid as well. I do believe for a short time Lucian was used in Mid also, but not to the same extent as Ezreal, Corki and Kog' Maw. And of course Teemo, the 'Man with No Meta' is a Top/Mid.

Also, as I've stated, Lucian was used in mid for a brief time, largely to destroy Immobile Mages as he has a nice blend of both Burst and Sustain, Ability and Auto, and the Mobility to dodge the heavy spells coming his way (and Life Steal once he gets it, so he can out-sustain easily).

But here's the deal. Most Tops are Tanks or Juggernauts... or Quinn who feasts on Tanks and Juggernauts. Now, some ARE Duelists... and these wouldn't be the best match up.

Lucian has some Heavy Armor Pen Builds that melt Tanks, and the Mobility to disengage off Gap Closers that Tanks will bring (or to kite Juggernauts who don't have Gap Closers for infinity). Also, his extra Mobility would make him difficult to Gank. I also imagine his Roam to Mid, where he could even fire off some Abilities from the River Brush and avoid Skill Shot CC with his Mobility could wreck Mages in tandem with his Mid.

Like most Marksman he'd also have the ability to melt waves faster than most Tanks and some Juggernauts, and is quick to destroy Turrets with his Passive.

Now, I'm completely open to being explained why he isn't a viable alternative, in the mold of Quinn Top or Corki/Ezreal/Kog' Maw Mid. I'm not saying he'd be an 'Every Game Champion' at Top either, but specifically when looking to face Tanks, Bruisers and Juggernauts.

Especially after these nerfs, I'm going to say no. He is low range, and top is very easy to gank, but this time, luc doesn't have a support to back him up. Armor is also more effective than damage early, and despite the popular armor shredding build that luc is using these days, it takes a while to get that gold. That time is, again, usually spent with lucian being babysat.

As an example, Maokai would completely destroy a lucian top; his gapcloser/root outranges lucians auto attack range, meaning that from level 2 on, lucian can't approach the wave without getting drawing aggression for Mao.

The only two marksmen that are successful top are Graves, who was redesigned to fit in the top/jungle and doesn't work so well in the bot lane anymore, and Quinn who's kit Riot has even said is completely unfair to melee champions. I personally think that if Quinn was more popular, we would see a LOT more of her....in the very top of every champ select. So neither one of of the marksmen that are good top lane are great comparisons to Lucian.

He probably has some decent matchups top lane, but I think he would lose the vast majority of matchups and/or be a victim to a good jungler.
