How to lane against Teemo as melee champion?

Kukiel·2/23/2018, 6:55:16 AM·45 votes·18,301 views

I'm usually a chill person, but I just cannot figure how to lane against Teemo when I play melee champions like Irelia or Poppy, and it's driving me crazy everytime it happens.

I tried farming under turret, but everytime I try to last hit a minion is an opportunity for Teemo to attack or even dive and kill me.

Would someone please help me with itemization ideas and/or tips that would let me farm while playing against Teemo?

Thank you

You'll usually need one of these, depending on how you plan to build later on: item 3155 item 1057 item 3211

His harass is a pain but if you build defensively at first you can work your way to getting the damage you need to kick his ass.

Also try to make use of his cooldowns, assuming you know them, and try to get control wards, oracle alteration, or sweeping lens as soon as possible for shrooms. If you're hit with a blind, don't just run away then come back in time for him to hit you with another blind. Try to get to a bush so he can't just spam auto you and make your way to him, and then go in for a trade (after you've gotten defenses to deal with it).

Teemo is also INCREDIBLY susceptible to ganks up top. Like, he has no reliable way of getting out and if he's pushing you under turret then he's basically a free meal for your jungler, so just let 'em know "Hey we got a free kill up here my dude." If you don't get the help, though, just build a logical defensive option like listed above and farm under turret, and only go in to fight once you know you've got ways to do so without getting too punished for it.

  • Start item 1054 and get the Second Wind rune if you know you're up against him. I can't extend this enough, but the sustain these two provide against constant poke/DoT is absolutely massive.
  • If you're a tank then rush item 3211 (Poppy for example), but otherwise don't be baited into getting too much defensive items early (Irelia). Unless he didn't get big enough of a lead by level 6, most top laners should be able to 100-0 him in an all-in - Irelia definitely can.
  • The one thing you must not do is being indecisive about going in. Try finding a good opportunity (like right after he poked you with Q and the blind wore off), and then blow everything on him.

Hopefully this helps :)

If you can counter pick then Pantheon hard counters him

There's a classic build on Irelia that dates back to season 1 or 2 that holds up very well vs. Teemo.

It being: item 3091 item 3065 all the while still building your usual later on: item 3078 item 3053

The best way to win against Teemo as lane is to que as anything other than top lane and have other people deal with it.

This is a Garen officionado talking, just to make sure you have context.

Teemo is not much unlike Darius’s Q: you ultimately want to get on top of him and smother him. Here’s a few things I personally do with Garen. Take the core principles of my experience and apply them to your situation however you can:

  1. With Garen vs. Teemo, I take Q/W/E for levels 1/2/3 respectively. I won’t have the tools/resistances necessary to take him head on without my early W. I get tankier just by farming.

  2. I max E as my main damage tool vs Teemo as Garen. It’s sustained DPS he has no way of interrupting aside from killing me. Q is worse here because his blind can deny my damage and gives him an immediate advantage in the trade when using Garen’s Q. Instead, when you do start trading, approach with E.

  3. item 3194 Adaptive Helm is Teemo’s cancer. His E passive and his shrooms, his main sources of ability damage, get substantially reduced by this. What’s more, is that it has a hidden passive of showing you the direction of the source of the damage, Teemo himself, even when he’s stealthed. I usually build the MR+Health portion first and then rush a Bami’s Cinder for additional health and DPS from the Immolate aura.

  4. Focus on farming for the early part of the lane. Don’t try to hard push the lane unless you have the advantage and can make him lose CS. Instead, hard punish him when he tried to get creeps close to the back of your wave. Once you’re on top of him, his only choices are to fight or run. He has no self peel aside from shrooms.

  5. Consider taking ignite to secure kills in favorable trades. I don’t ever take TP on Garen; your Q is up frequently enough for you to get back to lane quickly, even now.

Hopefully some of these tips can translate to whomever you play. :)

With irelia you just all in him.

Kai Guy2/23/2018, 7:12:41 AM3 votes

Not much to do. Try to not die, try to get as much CS, Grab Red trinket and clear if your able to push so your jungle can visit. Drag the game on till he falls off and don't let him get a fat gold lead. If you keep him from getting to a point he can push 1v1 he falls off hard.

An annoying champ in bad matchups. just way it goes.

I have played a lot of Teemo. I realize he's quite tough to lane against.

First thought is commuicate with your jungler. If he's pushing you to your tower call for a gank. Be patient too, If you're getting harrassed just farm the creeps you can get safely. If he's building AP, he's going to be squishy. Putting him behind early is a good tactics if you have a good jungler.

Play a champ with a gap close or some form of cc.

Watch his builds. Most Teemo mains are ga ga for his AP build for good reason, the potential DMG can be insane.

But other Teemo players may go for the on hit Mallet build. And I'm telling you that while that build's DMG output is less, it's significantly more consistent, because the DMG comes from AAs, his Q and E, and this build relies on his shrooms less, even the nerf to Mallet

Champs I hate to face are Good Riven players, Fiora, because if they play it right the can negate Teemo's Q, Akali holy smokes even shitty Akali players crap on Teemo, Irelia , Darius , and Tryndamere mains that know how to play the matchup can be a problem despite Teemo being a counter and Camille

Lastly, play Teemo to lvl 5. You'll get a good feel of how to play him how people counter you and you'll be ready for his tactics when you switch back to your main.

Good luck!

My suggestions:

  1. Counterpick. Nasus beats all range, although he struggles early on, just play safe and stack early on. Don't be afraid to lose CS if you need to, just stack what you can. You might lose turret to him, but you still beat him regardless. DrMundo has his Mundo-ness, and has an innate item 3194, so he should, in theory, be good. Kayle can do well, play smart, rush item 3091, and outscale him. She's not exactly melee, but she can go top. And if he tries to splitpush you to death, you'll win. Shen I've found to do decently into him. You lose a bit pre-3, but W and E neutralize him. Gangplank is a bitch to fight as Teemo, but isn't a super easy win for GP. Again, farm and outscale. If you hit him with a barrel at any point in time after 10 minutes, he's basically dead.
  2. Counterbuild. item 3091 and item 3194 are the two best items against him. Your first item should always be item 3211. item 1054 is one of your best starting items against him on everyone who doesn't need item 1056. And, of course, item 3364 and item 2055 neutralize his traps. Vital if you want a gank (Jungler can't gank through his traps, since he'll be too slow), and essential late-game, otherwise squishies get two-shot by him.
  3. Runes. You have two runes that beat him well: Nullifying Orb and Second Wind. The first stops dives, the second gives regen after him hitting you. Take both if you can. Always take at least one.
Raiyza2/23/2018, 5:34:13 PM2 votes

You need to rush MR. Grab a negatron. Then, if you can work around the blind, you should be able to outtrade. If you have lifesteal, then you can farm a lot easier.

sho ayane2/23/2018, 11:41:16 PM2 votes

I consider myself to be a Poppy one trick, so I can help you with the Teemo vs Poppy match up.

Teemo is the weakest he has been in while (he didn't need the nerfs imo but that's another topic) so you can beat him rather easily.

If you just follow a few tips you can either crush Teemo, or at least have reasonable creep score and therefore auto win the teamfights later (mostly).

summoner 12 is great on Poppy summoner 14 I think this is completely useless (in this matchup) but take it if you want to

I always buy item 2033 vs Teemo instead of item 1054 because that's what works for me personally, but both are viable.

Only fight Teemo if you can pick up your passive shield, and only hit Teemo with your passive if his Q blind is on cooldown to ensure it lands. If you hit the passive and get the shield, (AS LONG AS THE CREEP WAVE ISN'T TOO LARGE), you can just walk up to him and auto q auto, then e away to a minion if you haven't used it already, however w and run into a bush is just as good.

If you take item 2033 trade as much as possible level 1 as the passive buff means you can do an insane amount of damage with the item 2033, don't let Teemo push you into the tower as farming under tower with Poppy is incredibly difficult so its preferable to freeze and ping your jungle for ganks. If you want to get a lead you have to act early preferably before level 6, trading like above to get him to 50% hp, then you can easily flash for a wall stun and delete him easily.

If the Teemo player sucks, you can build any items that work on Poppy (within reason) and just run him down. If I get a lead ---->item 3751 thenitem 3211 into item 3194 NEVER BUY item 3065 ON POPPY EVER (unless you have a Soraka on your team). Buy as many control wards as you can, as well as sweepers, make sure to sweep the river before asking for ganks. If the river hasn't been swept don't ask for ganks unless you have seen Teemo not move outside the lane for five minutes. If you get ahead vs Teemo you can out trade him especially with item 3211 or item 3194 and just e stun him under tower and blow him up.

If you have Aftershock, you can win trades easily like this, wait till Teemo wastes his q on a minion, passive auto attack him, e into him (into a wall preferably) get the aftershock shield, auto, q, auto, w and run into the bush.

If you use Grasp of the Undying you can trade in a similar way as with aftershock, just wait for his q to be on cooldown, and for your Grasp and passive to be up.

If you have Summon Aery you can trade in the same way as Aftershock, however an extra auto attack will send Aery again in most cases,

If you go to trade don't forget ![item 2033](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.11.1/img/item/2033.png) ![item 2033](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.11.1/img/item/2033.png) ![item 2033](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.11.1/img/item/2033.png) ![item 2033](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.11.1/img/item/2033.png) ![item 2033](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.11.1/img/item/2033.png) ![item 2033](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.11.1/img/item/2033.png) ![item 2033](https://ddragon.leagueoflegends.com/cdn/16.11.1/img/item/2033.png)

If you are losing vs Teemo there are a few things you can do so survive the lane and keep a decent creep score. Using your abilities early to ensure you get cs, then backing early with a item 1054 or item 3211 depending on how it goes, can make his poke much more manageable. Try to always hit Teemo with your passive (use that buff riot gave us :)) but try to not to miss farm.

If Teemo is aggressive, only walk up to cs with your passive shield active, the healing from second wind, and damage reduction from bone plating will basically be a god send for you and get you so much farm. Many Poppy mains buy item 1055 in order to cs more effectively under tower however I don't but you can try to see if it helps.

Build vs Teemo --------> item 2033 ,item 1054 (if you get pushed out),item 3211 (if you don't get pushed out early), into item 3194 (finish this as fast as possible), then normal build after item 3068 ,item 3047 ,item 3025 then situational items afterwards item 3193 item 3075 item 3800 item 3190 item 3143 .

VS TEEMO ALWAYS TAKE NULIFYING ORB!

I personally do not like item 3155 and item 3156 on Poppy but you are welcome to try them out and see how they work for you.

Ganking Teemo

If you ask for ganks make sure you sweep the river, or at least put a pink in the tri brush or river brush (depending on what side you are on); If your jungle is pathing to come and gank you, bait out Teemo w "Move Quick", it has a long cooldown and he is free gold if you gank a Teemo without it Teemo love bushes, Poppy loves bushes because they are all next to walls, a scared Teemo will run straight to the bush and you can e him for a free kill.

My final piece of advice is just to not ban Teemo, and play against him more often. I used to ban him so often, but now I know how to play him I can ban other champions who are much stronger instead.

Hopefully other people can help you with Irelia :)

[poppy-wink]

This is a link to the Rank 6 on the Korean sever who is a Poppy one trick that I "stalk" :) I watch his all his games, and even though I have hardly seen Teemo , keep an eye out for him, otherwise watching him vs matchups such as Gnar Karthus Kayle Kennen Urgot Vladimir can help you improve generally in the melee vs ranged matchup. http://www.op.gg/summoner/champions/userName=누구를%20위한

Any constructive feedback is appreciated!!

Hopefully you will be able to beat Teemo more easily in the future because lets face it, he sucks right now after recent nerfs. (And he was weak before sadly ;-;)

If this helped you, help share to others and Upvote!

Samflash32/23/2018, 10:59:39 PM1 votes

Two options:

Play a champion that can kill him and build accordimg to his build.

Play a defensive/struggling champion and build defensive items that adapt to your team's needs. Health is always a good buy for defense.

ahferroin72/24/2018, 8:48:19 PM1 votes

Early magic resist is the biggest thing, first item on almost anyone top against a Teemo should generally be one of the second tier MR items (item 3155 item 1057 or item 3211). By staying alive more reliably, you reduce the chance that he will get a lead (and once he's a thousand or so gold ahead, there's not much you can do).

item 3194 is particularly powerful against him because of how it interacts with DoT effects (if you get hit by only his E or a mushroom, each tick will do successively less damage). Additionally, spectre's cowl (which builds into adaptive helm) is a good option against any DoT focused character, because the bonus regen will help mitigate the DoT.

As useless as this sounds, pay attention to when you're blinded, especially if you have low attack speed. Just wait out the blind instead of trying to auto-attack during it (attacking during the blind doesn't directly hurt you, but it does make it more likely you won't be able to immediately auto attack when the blind ends, and will waste any on-hit effects you might have active).

In the case of Irelia, bait the blind and then jump him when it wears off. Without his blind, you out-damage him assuming you have reasonably equal builds and level.

Poppy is a bit trickier, as reliably killing Teemo as her requires you to pin him to the wall (and a good Teemo will do everything in his power to avoid letting you do this).

Violet Fields2/23/2018, 11:42:17 PM1 votes

If you start with item 1054 , you can get past his early game poke, it might be difficult though. When he starts getting his shrooms build a item 3155 as an AD bruiser or if you're a tank build a item 3194 since his damage is constant and isn't very "spread out" so to put it.

You can also just play Chogath and wait for that level 6.

DragonShea2/24/2018, 12:41:28 AM1 votes

Teemo is a massive lane bully that falls off hard if the player can deny him CS and Kills. Patience and skill is needed in dealing with him he will screw himself over with his own advantages, bully a laner under tower, get ganked. People getting some defensive items like item 3211 and item 1054 to farm safer, can't trade as well anymore.

Teemo is all about being an annoying little shit that can't survive when someone picks the right time to all in him and deny him the chance to run away like a bitch.

I've found that rushing MR like item 3211 and item 3155 help greatly against taking less damage. And a item 1054 can help too. My main strategy is to rush MR, bait out his Q, and then if he does dive in. Or if you have ways to attack without using auto-attacks, dive in a bit after getting blinded, use your abilities to start off, then just cut him down with AAs.

don't play melee champs in top by default in solo q .. junglers don't care about you so play something like jayce or gnar.. or main akali top because she is op teemo can be countered by olaf if you throw the axe on him and follow him to kill him early very easy

Play Nasus, Build Tabis. GG

Teemo is a garbage champion that has no team presence and his push is horrid.

Expect to lose your lane.

However, ask jungler to gank him twice because teemo has NOTHING. GG.
