It seems to me that there are quite a few tools and websites out there that offer more information than what the game is willing to tell/show you. Why is that? How come this information is not in the game? I'd like to know my team average MMR, who is queued together, who they play etc. There should be nothing to hide, as Riot is confident in their matchmaking correct?
A lot of it's a toxicity thing I believe. Like even if MMR is equal, maybe seeing a considerable gap in your lowest vs highest whereas the enemy team has a pretty stable mmr across all five members could result in bullying the lowest rated player in the game.
There's also the thing about not being able to see enemy rank and things due to how it can affect your mental going into the game. Seeing a M7 formerly plat Yasuo can kind of put you in this mental spot of "Well I already lost the lane" even if he could have like a 10% WR on Yas and he's on a heavy losing streak, or something. Things like that.
That's the one and only upside of being silver. A silver 5 players can easily outplay/win lane/get fed against a gold 5 player because low elo is so much luck of the draw. You get a teammate who is trolling/afk/feeding and you are likely going to lose because of toxic flamers. I know several people who are plat and above that are worse than sliver/gold players I know, and even admit as much. It's all just luck of the draw in low elo and how hard you can carry.
Because visible elo didn't really tell us much. Back when elo was visible, people still just looked at the ranked badges because it was easier to interpret at a glance.
That being said, there is so much information available on the API that it probably isn't that hard to estimate mmr if you actually went and parsed through all of the information properly. It is just so low yield that no one bothers.
I remember back when people begged riot to show dominion elo rating. Then a bot came along and scraped all of the data to freely show dominion elo and no one cared.
