Daily reminder that Galio isn't nearly as bad as many people think.
He's a counterpick to a magic-heavy team; in a meta where ADC's have been kings for centuries, it's somewhat rare for this to happen.
You can build him full tank, AP offtank, or full AP mage. Each has its benefits and flaws that can help the team. Also, Galio support is very underrated.
Hint hint: when playing AP offtank Galio in lategame, pressing W might as well give you Alistar's ult due to the disgusting amounts of healing you get. You could gain back 50% of your healthbar just by pressing W and flying into an enemy minion wave.
Just gotta add more BRO power to it. Also, Yorick and Urgot exist.

aka galio the fister lol
Bought Gatekeeper Galio during snowdown, no regrets.
If you can manage his early, mid and late game mana issues he's actually incredibly powerful.
Not really. I'm not saying he is bad, but he is not great either. Even if you manage to overcome his mana issues, he has tons of other problems. For example; his ult looks good on paper, but is very hard to successfully use it against a competent team unless you flash. His E is one of the most boring abilities on the game, deals little damage and gives little movements speed. W is mediocre at best. I mean he is strong and will rek anyone that hasn't played against him in a long time, but after you play as him for a few games in a row you start to realize that most of your success comes from your enemies lack of experience against you.
I find most people are thinking of his kit wrong, they either try to build all MR for the passive or they try to use him as an engage for the team, his passive is an early game thing if you're building him as a mage, you can build a null magic mantle vs an enemy AP and they now do less damage while you do more, it's like getting an automatic lead, but from there you should be building for damage,
are going to do way more for you than
. If you're building him as a tank then you want to play him as a bodyguard, he is a pure disengage tank, his Q is much easier to land onto enemies that are heading towards you, his E is great for closing the distance between himself and an ally while aiding their escape from any enemies chasing them, his W gives either himself or an ally a massive boost in tank stats, 90 to each resist at max level, and if someone is that determined to get onto a carry you can ult right next to them and either catch the attacking enemies in the ult allowing your team to kill them or at least zoning them off since it's pretty hard to assassinate someone standing in a Galio ult. Galio also has amazing waveclear while he can sustain his mana, a Q and E will usually clear an entire wave with some AP, stopping any siege attempts. Built tanky he still does decent damage due to his high base numbers and is incredibly hard to kill thanks to his W and disengage ability, as a mage he can clear waves almost instantly and shut down other mages hard with an
rush.
Galio is one of a few champions that are intentionally mana gated heavily due to their lane presence while they can sustain their mana, some other examples being old Poppy, Yorick, and Pantheon, with larger mana pools these champions become enormous lane bullies and in some cases were used in 1v2 lanes in past seasons.
I agree and understand what you are saying. I play Galio a lot and I don't remember the last time I lost laning phase. My main problem comes when I get to mid/late game. At this stage I am either a poke mage or as you said yourself; a type of disengage tank. Neither feel good to be honest. If I took the AP heavy path, I need to rely on my teammates to help me after I pull a good ult because I can't poke down people faster than they go through my defenses. It becomes much worse when I realize that Q is my only reliable damaging ability. This of course get much better at late game when I can build some tank items ( but i feel this is usually too late).
Going full tank is worthless as you said, since you end up without damage, and your abilities don't benefit a full tank. Over all, my main issue is that outside of lane dominance, Galio dosn't feel as satisfying as other champs that do a similar job. The most entertaining part of his kit is his ult, feels amazing getting a 5 man ult, followed by an ACE. But if you play Galio you will find out that getting a good ult is very hard because you don't have the mobility to position yourself.
Overall fun champion, but as much as i love him i can't main him because i feel he has many issues that won't let him surpass the challenges of the current meta.
