A Social Guide to League

Have you gotten in game, looked at the chat, and thought, "What on earth is the chat for?" I remember when I first realized there was a chat, it was because I saw words like "please die" and "get cancer". Fear not! The chat is not actually meant for that. Learning how to use the chat properly can actually be a very good way to win your games. I've been playing for more than three years now, so I can say that for certain.

  • When to use chat: Team Coordination Preferably, you want to use the chat whenever you need to coordinate something with the team that cannot be done with pings, or to tell someone that they did well. It feels great to not be confused right? If you have a strategy, tell the team! If you want to group, say "I want to group!" Better yet, "Let's try to group in X minutes!" People more readily follow suggestions if you give them advance suggestions ahead of time as well. It also feels great to be told "good job!" It will boost team morale and make the game an overall fun game! You can also use the chat to alleviate tense situations. If two people are arguing, you can say "Don't worry, we can still turn it around" or "It's not a big deal, we can still win!"

  • IMPORTANT NOTE: never respond to rude people. They will just respond back with more rude comments. It's completely useless because they think they can say whatever they want to behind a screen. If you are getting singled out by a premade team, then type "/mute all" and you will be fine. No need to respond, or they will have leverage to report you. The automated system does not differentiate these things.

  • When NOT to use chat It's not a good idea to use the chat in general for anything else other than the previous things. The reason is that people have no way of knowing what you mean without body language unless it's very very very obvious. So joking is best through voice chat. Also, don't use the chat to flame, or tell someone they are bad. If you want to win, it will only make it harder. If you are mad, close league as soon as you can and go do something that is actually enjoyable. Also, never say "report this guy!" Some people are having a bad game, some people are having a bad day. If the person is obviously intentionally feeding, everyone clearly sees that and there's no need to give the troll food for thought. People will report that whether you tell them to or not.

  • ALSO when to not use chat: blaming, etc... Don't tell people how to play unless they asked for advice. Even if it's a nice suggestion. Even if you have good intentions. Because they will report you. It's the unfortunate truth. Most people who play this game tend to think they are the best, so constructive criticism immediately causes them to flame, feed, and rage, immediately losing you the game. It's in your best interests to let them learn by themselves.

  • IMPORTANT NOTE If you are a person who enjoys flaming during the game, open up a Word Document as the game starts and when you feel like you want to type something, quickly tab out and start typing. When you are done, tab back in. This way you don't tilt your team and you get to flame!

Have fun out there! Feel free to add on to this.
