2-Charge Smite Threw Off the Balance Between Stalker's Blade and the Other Jungling Items

For the last few days, whenever I played a match, it hasn't mattered who the jungler was, they took item 3706 as their jungling item.

Notitem 3711 , not item 3713 , not item 3715 .

Sure, there are other factors that created this imbalance to begin with, but the recent introduction of 2-Smite Charges is what I believe made Stalker's an even better choice than the others.

The reason is quite clear: There's no longer a disadvantage to using Chilling Smite on Champions.

There is no, "Should I save it in case I need to secure dragon or get a buff, or should I use it to gank top/mid/bot / kill the other jungler?" **Why not both? **

Many of the popular junglers don't even need Smite to keep clearing the jungle; they can save up to 2 Smites at any time, and their clear speeds are fast enough after the first or second clear that using Smite on monsters is unnecessary.

Even if they roam and constantly gank different lanes, the travel time itself with camp clearing makes it so that a significant portion of the next smite is close to being off CD by the time they reach the next lane, such that the total amount of time between 2 ganks using Smite are much smaller than before the 2-Smite patch.

The ganking potential of Chilling Smite was large before, and it's been further amplified by the changes, given that it's a point-and-click movespeed steal that deals a bit of true damage. It can aid in finishing off and preventing the escape of enemies, and as such, is useful even in the late game, unlike the Poacher's and Trailblazer's.

As for Skirmisher's.. well, the damage from it's Challenging Smite is dealt is over 3 seconds. I'd argue that it's still useful, but that's under the assumption that the target stays or is kept in combat range.

Since I haven't seen any threads about this, thought I'd try and start up a discussion about this.

I personally think item 3706 's synergy with the 2-Smite system either needs toning down or the others need changes to keep up.

item 3711 and item 3713 in particular can't be considered very good in the long run since their effects don't even scale into the late game in the way the other two do.

What do you guys think? Agree, disagree? Any specific changes you guys think would be good?

Please keep off-topic comments out of the conversation.

I buy item 3706 only on champions without lock-down (or amazing sticking power) and/or benefit from the move-speed. Hecarim RekSai Nocturne Shyvana

I buy item 3715 on champions with a lot of lockdown and low-AS (so they don't stack the damage-burn) Malphite and JarvanIV

I buy item 3713 on champions that don't need the CC, or the damage, and really need help clearing their jungle quickly. Rammus Pantheon

Nobody buys item 3711 because it is garbo (seriously needs to be reworked).

I think the items are more balanced then they ever have been. If you combine this with the exchange system, I often find myself using all 3 of the viable smites every game I play. Delaying your jungle buy to utilize the changing smite system for the first 15 minutes or so is a legit strat.

tl;dr The item's are completely balanced and everybody hasn't realized that item 3706 isn't that great this patch. 20% slow and < 100 true damage for the entire game is that great. Yeah its good on some champs, but not universally OP anymore.

Source: I'm a jungle main that experiments a lot. Tell me I'm stupid and I'm playing it all wrong, but this is my experience that Stalker's is FAR from optimal on every champion.

But.. that was their point with the change anyway. They basically said they don't want junglers to have to "hold on" to their Smite because they were afraid of being caught without it when they needed to secure a buff or dragon/baron. So they gave charges so that you could do both.

I don't think OP is arguing against the two charge change. It's the fact that Chilling Smite has been given even more power compared to the other smite variations by this change. If you don't have to worry about using smite with a dragon / baron / buff due up soon then it's just extra power. That extra power is fine but when it's a fairly significant move speed steal it offers a lot more potential for changing fights than all other smite versions. Ultimately it is making the use of other smite versions pretty limited and almost forcing all junglers down the same path. Where is the 'strategic diversity' if every jungler has the same smite path?

Now, and please forgive me if I'm making an error as I haven't had the time to become intimate with the new jungle items, but wouldn't there still be substantial power in having 2 charges of say the Poacher's Knife? It halves CD whenever you kill an enemy's buff. If you are counter jungling it seems like this would let you really tear through their camps. I haven't used it but would the 1/2 CD mean that if you used both charges, you'd have a 3rd charge ready? Or would you have 2 separate charges at 1/2 CD? Either way, seems potentially powerful.

I can't answer your thoughts as I haven't done that. However, there is a fairly substantial risk of invading the enemy jungle. There is no risk in using Chilling Smite on a champion. Again, the complaint is that it offers a lot more for killing the other team than clearing camps and pushes the other smite versions way down the list.
