How exactly does Phantom Dancer calculate "Deaths Defied"?

It seems wonky. I bought the item, got in my first fight, died, but somehow I had "Defied Deaths: 1", when I obviously hadn't.

If i had to guess. basically if you take damage that would normally kill you. and you don't die because of the damage reduction it adds +1 to the counter even If you die from subsequent damage source. maybe there is some time limit on it or maybe its something has to do with burst

example. if you 1v1 in bot lane. you kill the other adc and you have little hp because of that damage reduction that otherwise u'd be dead. it will add one. even if you die because someone other than the adc killed you in that time period. obviously after you kill the other adc and survive with the little hp u have.

This is just a hunch here, but my guess is, that it counts for each attack that would've killed your champion, but failed to due to the damage reduction of the item.

Which granted, often means your champion lived a fraction of a second longer, unless you have a really good shield/life steal on you.

Yeah I'd like to know that aswell, it said it had ''defied'' 18 deaths. I bought the item to replace my boots when I was fullbuild on GP. I highly doubt it did honestly.... summoner 31

Here's a reddit thread about "deaths defied," with a lot of Riot explanation: link.

Basically, if you do anything "aggressive" when you would be dead without the Phantom Dancer damage reduction, it counts as 1 death defied. Also, if you should have died, but you live for 8 seconds after the fight has stopped, you also get 1 death defied.
