Why Riot

My friend lost more games in his 10 games for placement and got silver 5 . I won 8 out of 10 games and got bronze 4. My first 5 games I went AD and AP champs so I required kills and i went positive on 3 of 5 games I think(and won 3 out of first 5 games). While I went support and tanks on the last 5 games but won all 5 .So Im guessing kills matter now and not assists and supporting. Thank you riot right when I though ranked was fixed this season.

What if I told you that your rank this season is based on your rank last season, and the idea that people should get tossed willy nilly around the ladder by ten highly random placements is a stupid one?

Technically, it's based on their MMR, which can be higher or lower than the average of the rank they are in (resulting in placements that differ from another person in the same rank with the same placement wins).

Him getting a crap placement means his MMR was crap, and his friend had decent MMR.

H0riz0n2341 votes

I know I have good MMR, I played with silvers once and I usually play with bronze 2 and 3. But im still bronze 4. No point in ranks if its MMR who decide whos the same skill level as you

Deep Terror Nami1 votes

There really isn't that huge a skill gap between divisions. Rankings do have a point; they are goalposts for you to reach and earn rewards (and/or bragging rights). If they didn't exist, there would still be certain levels of MMR which coincide with rewards and whatnot of course, but your MMR changes drastically all the time, it would be silly to measure your skill by a number that can change rapidly. Having a range of MMR and calling it a Tier/Division is much nicer.

Believing you are skilled is not enough; you need to prove it again and again against people who think the same thing. Saying you are "X" Tier skillful is a ridiculous notion for only 10 games.

Well then why was there placement if I was just gonna be the same rank as last season??

Deep Terror Nami1 votes

You aren't guaranteed the same rank. You just happened to get it because your MMR was high enough and you did well enough in the placements.

Also, in your OP you mentioned something about "kills matter and not support and assisting". No. None of them matter. You can go 0/0/0 with 0 CS and the amount of MMR you gain or lose will be the same. The only thing that matters is whether you win or not, and how high/low MMR your opponents were compared to you (you gain more for winning against higher MMR, lose more for losing against lower MMR).

Well ranked sounds broken from the sound of it. I learn nothing important in bronze games I look for ways to improve but bronze players always make the same mistake and when i make a mistake its not that I don't know it its that I didn't think fast enough or something. ranked doesn't feel ranked at all. feels like normal blind pick where there are definitely trollers and feeders

Deep Terror Nami1 votes

The other team has the same chance as you. Everybody always blames the system saying it is wronging them and giving opponents the edge, when in reality everyone is being treated the same. It makes no sense to argue that you get dragged down by terrible players and completely ignore this fact. This is why you have to play a lot to gain rank; over a period of time the average will become more correct in determining your skill.

H0riz0n2341 votes

Not really a same chance as you would say. If you have trollers and feeders the only way it can level the battlefield is if they have a troller or feeder also. because league is competitive and about denying the other team from getting fed they have to have big consequences when you feed someone. It adds to the level of competitiveness. But when not serious players decide to feed or troll your basically taking their punishment for feeding and ruins the gameplay. This is why it is unfair and it is the communities fault but I haven't seen league come up with a new solution yet so it seems its gonna stay this way.

On average over many games. Not in a single game. The only way you're going to avoid this is by doing premade team games.

H0riz0n2341 votes

I heard when you do premade teams your teamed against other premade teams. Is this true??

Deep Terror Nami1 votes

It's more likely but it's not guaranteed if it increases the queue time too much.

But what I meant was a full 5v5 ranked team, rather than in Team Builder. You have complete control over who you allow in your group. It's more competitive than solo queue though.

H0riz0n2341 votes

As long as its competitive and mistakes that are made arent idiotic like bronze players

H0riz0n2341 votes

Well if wins matter it sounds a good player could easily be dragged down my other unskilled players

Well if thats the case im disappointed that this is their 5th season and its still havent fixed the problem. Cause I 100% believe I should at least be in bronze 1. And I have played with people who belong there to.

We'll you can 100% believe it all you want, but if you were actually bronze 1, you would have a higher than 50% winrate and you'd get up there.

Random variation matters very little over anything more than a dozen or so games. If you are better than the division you are in, you will win more than half the time.

Not true in most cases. If you are like extremely better then your team mates you can carry but with placement in champion select it makes it difficult. I see people carrying themselves out of bronze as gold or plat players. So while extremely skilled they can be placed in the a division ;lower then their skill level.

And to comment on your first comment what about the people who have improved since being placed in bronze. Are they subject to the supposed elo hell from bronze players While players in higher ranks getting way less of the problems in bronze are left with more reasonably fair matches?

Look, if you win anywhere more than half the time, you gain rank. You have exactly equal chance of bad players, trolls, and AFKs as the enemy team. That leaves you at a 50% chance still.

The only difference is your own skill. Champion select? You should get one of your two preferred roles 70-75% of the time and you should have one champ you can play without feeding in the other three. If not, you're bronze.

You don't have to be gold to get out of bronze. You have to be not bronze. That is the cold hard truth of it. I tried playing on a bronze smurf when I was a Silver V player-the bare, bare minimum above bronze, and I had more trouble losing than anything else.

So end agreement is ranked is still broken??

Nope. Working exactly as intended. Players who deserve bronze are in bronze.

H0riz0n2341 votes

your saying you need to be a whole another tier in skill to get out of bronze. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of ranks 1-5. I understand higher tiers is not really broken but bronze definitely is.

....yes. You need to be Silver V in skill to get out of bronze.

It's going to take longer to get to where you should be the closer you get to it, that's the nature of the game. If you're stuck in one division for months, surprise, you're not a Bronze 1 skill level or whatever you're a Bronze Wherever You're Stuck skill level.

H0riz0n2341 votes

Not true In many ways. Teams can hold you back and if you havent noticed this you havent played ranked at all or never been introduced to the bronze tier. Some people learn faster then others and get a higher tier at placements. The ones who are placed in bronze are stuck there until they can play at a silver 3 or 4. SO wether if your in bronze 1 or 5 you need a whole different skill to actually start climbing(which is hard already with bronze players as is). As an example when I was placed last season it was bronze 1. which i believe I didn't deserve it. But know i believe with all certainly Im better then 90% of bronze 4 players

SmokingPuffin2 votes

My friend lost more games in his 10 games for placement and got silver 5. I won 8 out of 10 games and got bronze 4.

Your friend was matched up against higher rated opponents in his placement matches than you were.

So Im guessing kills matter now and not assists and supporting.

The ranked system cares only about wins and losses. It doesn't track KDA, CS, or any other stats that we typically use to analyze player performance.
