Riot really needs to bring back old mana regen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q27rJzT_F8E This video shows the meta about 8 months ago when assassins were considered weak tier. Since then what has changed? Assassins were barely buffed mostly nerfed(talon, yasuo sorta he's a dps assassin and leblanc) The issue is the percentage mana regen change and jungle rework. Riot wants diversity but with the recent changes, jungle choices have been narrowed further down to mostly j4s and lee sins and the mid lane has been narrowed down to manaless assassins or mages who have sustain or cc to survive these assassins. I have no idea why riot gutted wws ult when it was the on hit of the smite and ff that was making it overpowering. Jungle pressure has definitely been weaker lately and these high risk assassins are not at much risk as they used to be. Furthermore they even made the jungle item 100g more and their context still didn't justify it, well imo atleast. I'm no challenger but the problems are quite evident and idk why riot is making dumb changes such as reducing zeds attack speed. Sure he kills towers a bit slower but thats not what people want. I don't want zed to be nerfed anymore either but simply restore the old mana regen and help out the junglers.

I don't think its so much about the new mana regen being inherently bad, as it was the game being balanced around the old mana regen system and not being updated properly to account for the mana vs manaless champion dynamics.

Akali got nerfed, Kat lost DFG and Zed is getting nerfs

Other than them there are plenty of mages already present in mid

In fact competitively Zed isn't close to as pick/ban as he is in solo queue, with most matches being Xerath/Ori/Azir/LB

Mana regen is fine

And last season, people were complaining about Grail being the fix all mana problems item.

The thing is, despite the Jungle changes, Pro Jungler's are still forking over Blue to the Mid laner. And Riot had most likely balanced Mage's MP5 around that.

The actual power that Assassins have Over all, I feel has not changed that much. Heal is basically where it was in that video. Exhaust has been nerfed, but it went to 40% DMG reduction from 50% which is still fair. Damage Over all has not change a whole lot (with some exceptions.)

There is still a fair number of Mages being played, Notably Azir, Xerath, Ori, and Lissandra.

I don't really like the Manaless assassins argument. Because Akali got nerfed and DFG had gotten removed. So I can only assume your talking about AD Manaless assassins, and for sake of the conversation, lets narrow it down to Mid lane assassins. That's a grand total of one Champion. Zed.

And the mages with Sustain and CC to survive them? That was the point in the video of why Assassins were dead back then. You would have to nerf them both or buff everyone else, to even attempt to truly balance them.

As for the Junglers. Yes the Jungle is a bit harder than it use to be. But champ diversity has actually went up. were getting J4, Rengar, seen some nunu action. along with lee and Elise. That's still better than last season which was the trinity of Lee sin, Elise, and Evalynn. And tank Junglers are almost Viable, they just really need a push which should probably be given to them on a Champ By champ basis. I mean, after her last buffs, I actually feel comfortable taking Sejuani into the current Jungle.

My opinion? Mana regen is fine. It is harder to manage your mana now, but that is not a bad thing.

I do not believe that we are seeing more assassins, or that assassins are much stronger now than they were before. There are three (maybe 2...) things that lead me to this conclusion.

  1. Immediately after the mana changes, people couldn't manage mana very well, and assassins were stronger. People noticed this. Now that mana has been re-learnt, assassin's power has lowered again.
  2. Riot recently nerfed some assassins. This increased the relative power of the others (compared to the average assassin), making them more noticeable. 2.1) Riot recently nerfed some assassins, mentioning that assassins were a problem. This brought the class to people's attention.

I believe that the reason that we are seeing lower diversity in games, particuarly in the jungle, is because people have the mistaken impression that to win this game you need to pick "OP" champions. You don't. Practicing a few champions that you enjoy will get you much further than picking whatever the pros do. ALL champions are viable (except maybe Yorick) in the right teamcomp in our low level games. It is only when you reach high Diamond that the OP picks matter, and even then, have you seen Urgot's winrate?
