Which is funny you mention because that's a case of a relationship being actually relevant to the story.

In the old lore, that relationship was both part of Varus' dilemma to protect his village or the temple, as well as the fuel for his vengeance and corruption.

In this new lore...the story could go completely unchanged without Kai and Val being lovers.
