A little love for Supports
Hey there Riot,
I'm a support main, my favorite champion is Leona, and I want to talk a little about my favorite role:
I'm really happy with the additions that you made with the support items having buffs that you could get, although tbh the quest part just feels like a big wait rather than actually being fun. I think it would be better if you could somehow make it that you finished the quest after destroying a certain amount of wards (like 2 or 3 or something reasonable), it would feel like you actually DID something to earn it rather than just poke, smack a minion or two, or walk around. This would also encourage supports to actively seek out enemy wards, something that helps game-play.
I'm glad that you finally gave certain items support based stats that you could see like Locket, I'd love to see more of this.
I know that support is the least played, and that might be because it takes someone a little crazy to say "no damage for me, it's the stuns I'm all about". But I think a good deal of this, like you guys have identified is lack of visibility. You can't see what you did at the end screen. That being said, I also think it might be due to the lack of variety in many support kits.
You have to have a stun/knock-up/hard cc somewhere in the kit Most of them have a heal or a shield somewhere And the ult is almost always another cc ability There's very little variation on that formula, and I understand why. But some champs feel very fresh, like Thresh. He has this same formula, but it was applied in a unique way... his abilities have INTERACTIONS with each other. Death Sentence + lantern for an amazing engage or escape, or use them alone to hold someone down and shield an ally. Flay someone into your ult for a cheeky bit of damage. Or use them alone to block someone off or pull someone out of a dash. He can do a LOT with his kit depending on how you use it.
I think if you added some neat interactions with all of the support skills it would make it more interesting to play. Allow Nami to pop her aqua prison to release the stun but to increase the lifesteal that her allies get off of that champion. Let Braum's winter's bite grow in size and pass through minions when he throws it while his ult is has been laid down. Allow Leona's zenith blade to pull champion's to her if she used solar flare to stun them. You don't have to do any of these things, they're just examples. I just wish that support kits had more versatility, since the whole point is to assist others there should be many ways to do it on each support champ than just "land cc and heal/shield ally champion".
Add in trade-offs as well, maybe have a champion that after they land a point blank short stun they can recast it to knock the champion in any direction they want. But if they do, they get knocked in the opposite direction themselves. It would add another level of play to support skills. Many support skills are pretty simple to know when to use, a little too simple sometimes.
Sorry for the rant,
I just really like playing support and wish that support champ's could get some more love.
