A Lack of Support Items for Ability Power Champions Who do Damage More Than Healing

ZaionX··22 votes·1,561 views

I main Zilean and those who have played him enough can support me when I say that zil does more damage to champs than healing to teammates. My concern is that with how Riot is approaching support items I feel like they are focusing too much on tank support items and instead of creating new items they are changing up other items and how they work to benefit tanks more than ability power users, which can cripple a few champs builds.

You see if you ever played zil you would know he doesn't heal frequently or shield as much like lets say, Soraka , Sona , or Lulu so getting an item that optimizes damage while also supporting your adc is a great find. But now I feel like there is barely any support items that can really help him with that anymore because of the changes Riot made. For example Banner of Command item 3060 this item was once a ap item it gave ap so you could do damage and I believe some armor as a bonus, but than a patch came and it became a tank item. Of course I decided that this item would not work well on zil anymore so I decided to look for something else and found the item that won me close games, Zeke's Harbringer item 3050. This item was perfect it gave me ap and crit to my adc and some armor as a bonus, but in this recent patch Riot has changed it so it is more of a tank item and the new passive has made it so. Instead of giving crit now if I were to have it zil would have a frost storm like shield that slowed enemies, this of course makes it a horrible idea to put on a mage because most mages shouldn't be so close to their target and without the ap the item has lost the main component I was looking for, to deal more damage while also helping my adc.

Now I try again and look and the only thing I really found that can help my adc in a fight was item 3116 and almost every supp has a stun, snare, knock up, etc so I'm not sure about how useful this item would be especially compared to Zeke's Harbringer. My point is I feel that support items for champs that (can) play support that focus on dealing damage rather than heal seems to be lacking now without Zeke's Harbringer champs like, Malzahar, Lux, and Zyra.

There are of course support items for ap such as item 3504 and item 3174, but those are more for healers and the such and on a malzahar or zyra its effects would have no effect.

What shit post is this.... hes talking about supports.

No real support will build deathcap early, and if they did build it on a supports income the match would be nearly over by the time they finish it... probably losing too because the other support finished a support item a long time ago and is contributing with the utility the item gives. Do you have like a dozen other accounts you upvoted this post with cause its so ignorant to suggest a support buy those.

Elsewise1 votes

Brand Velkoz Xerath Ziggs "Supports." Although, to be honest, Xerath isn't really seen in the support slot because Vel'Koz does it better.

Weasel Kensei1 votes

Yeah I know about "supports" but we really need a term for this...

I advocate for "misplaced mid supports" because most of these people doing this just didnt want to wait for the midlane que time.

Im still certain thats not what the OP was talking about. Clearly there are AP items for AP damage... He is referencing SUPPORT items. Zekes is a good example. It was an AP item, of reasonable price, now AP supports dont really have that option anymore. A Zil playing as a support instead of a misplaced mid support would probably rather build previous patch Zekes than AP mid laner items.

A "item 3089 item 3003 item 3157 " shitpost doesnt adress the issue that there arnt a lot of choices for support items where the support doesnt have a heal/shield. Zil has a stun, speed up/slow down, rez, but what support items (not just plain AP mage items) can he build? Thats his point.

Thats why a shit post response to this topic listing 3 AP items is so ignorant. It ignores the issue brought up.

Tobias Brackner1 votes

Ah, so it is clear you are ignorant that Zilean has moves that scale off of AP.

Tobias Brackner1 votes

He's talking about supports that scale w/ AP. It makes sense they should get items that give AP.

Also: Deathcap...early?

Where the fuck did I say to build Deathcap early? Zilean specifically wants to grab item 3070 -> item 3003 early as possible.

And go ahead and do the gold math to back up your "match would be nearly over" claim.

Weasel Kensei1 votes

I agree, I get tear on Zil when I play him even before sightstone (almost never delay sightstone).

Deatchap early issue, no you didnt say that... you didnt say anything, just made a post with 3 items... no nothing; deathcap being the first of those items. If you dont start deathcap early, you probably arnt building one.

Most matches I get item 2301 item 1001 (insert upgrade on boots)item 3174 item 3107 and the match is nearly over by this point allowing me to finish maybe one more item item 3504. Its rare to hit a full build on support, and deatcap cost almost as much as 2 of those last 3 items together.

I was clearly talking about deathcap being dificult to finish, you either playing dumb on purpose, or have a natural strawman instinct to bring up Aa staff a cheaper item with a good build path.

Their is a reason for that it doesnt make for a healthy bot lane man, if they gave more ap they would indirectly buff shield power. It would also make a which mage bot lane does more dmg to make the lane for the enemy adc hell. Just playing against brand which doesnt even need to build ap items is hard enough to deal with along with Zyra. I usually hate adc mains but it is no fun being poked down by a mage along with a cait it is pure cancer.

TotalJerk1 votes

I preferred when supports could buy items that made all their skills better instead of this bullshit: item 3114 turning everyone into a shield/heal bot.

item 2301 item 3092 item 3152 item 3116 ?

Jbels4 votes

Brand and Vel'koz don't need more reasons/ways to ruin bot lane

SSShutTheDuckUp1 votes

How exactly are they ruining the botlane?

Somnitsu3 votes

That's not an accident. Damage supports have high base damages so they don't have to rely to much on items.

Rainfall1 votes

a lot of supports have good scalings as well, have you seen an ap karma R+E. then you've seen jesus.

Elikain3 votes

I don't think it's possible to make an AP item that's support oriented without threading into mage territory. We've already seen what happened when FQC was good, that good that mid laners simply opted into first purchasing it and using it's already strong gold gen and utility meant for supports for their own benefit, to set up super easy ganks or create impossible situations for the enemy to dodge their skillshots (guaranteeing a used up Flash).

Also, what's wrong with Mejai's? It's a really decent (and cheap) item that relies on stacking it through kills or assists. As this is a risky buy for mid laners (they'd rather have guaranteed damage from raw AP), mage supports opting for this is a really good idea. And seeing if you can stack it is simply done through a purchase of an early game item (Dark Seal).

I buy Dark Seal regularly when i play Zilean or Morgana. Also, certain supports do scale their utility through AP so simply giving them the raw power to boost it (as opposed to passive increases in raw healing + shielding power), would probably upset a delicate balance between damage and utility that exists. Mages aren't exactly a staple bot laners but they do end up in the support position as they might share some traits as supports (CC that doesn't scale with AP).

As a Zilean support main playing @ platinum levels, here is what you should be building, and I think there are TONS of options for AP Support right now.

item 2301 Required for any AP support. This is core. item 3003 Zilean is a late-game support, this is a fantastic late-game damage boost with a huge early-game advantage. Being able to never go OOM as Zilean is a very practical skill. item 3165 Required for ANY AP mage or support, period. CDR is especially important to max on Zilean item 3135 Good late-game cheap damage spike. Not as good as item 3089. And you are almost always gunning for late game as a Zilean support. item 3102 Arguably the best item for any AP mage in the game currently. Must-buy. item 3285 Great item for Zilean - get as many movement-speed boosting items as possible - He has one of the most powerful hastes in the game, remember that he pairs best with champions that need to stick on their targets. item 3151 Your best option for dealing with bulky tanky initiate-style teams. Mind the no CDR - you ALWAYS want Max CDR as Zilean.

item 3742 Still probably the best defensive item against attack damage. The movespeed boost is just too good. This allows you to reliably keep up with your hasted targets. It also give you time to react to being exploded by AD assassins. item 3157 Super fantastic in almost every situation. It lets you keep two targets alive at the same time. You will always be a target - if your not, then your not at the skill level you should be. item 3065 Still arguably the best MR item in the game. item 3800 Way better than anyone gives it credit for, it's especially amazing on Zilean because he is one of the KINGS of counter-engage. item 3107 Solid choice, but I personally think its overrated. item 3190 Again, really solid choice. Most Zileans will favor damage over this, because they use their ultimate to turn the tables. item 3193 Underrated - Absolutely Killer if you start becoming the target.

So sad not everyone replying here understood you're looking for SUPP items on ap mages with lil to no heal. Even tho it's clear in the title.

ZaionX1 votes

Yeah, not everyone understands that, but to be fair I might have made it sound like I was trying to focus on only getting my damage up rather than improving the utility of the champ to help my team while also be efficient in the damage and heal of my champ as well. It could just be in my head, but if there was a misunderstanding due to how I worded this thread sorry I honestly tried my best to make it as clear as possible so that this situation would be avoided.

Morgana is really feeling this right now. She has a shield and it matters, but the cd is so long that buying shielding/healing items isn't really worth while. She just wants cdr, mana, and ap and truckloads of it all.

But even the typical mage items don't really fit her well except for Zhonya's and it's hard to get enough cdr on her with support levels of gold without buying something that feels really awkward on her.

DeathBurst1 votes

All the typical Mid Mage items are fine, what do you want more for your Zilean?

Erockandroll1 votes

{quoted}

All the typical Mid Mage items are fine, what do you want more for your Zilean?

Itemization probably isn't the only issue. Zil himself, can also serve as a mid laner, so his ratio's pretty much have to be balanced around the mid lane.

The problem I see with Zil support at the moment is, while most supports can't afford raw AP, they can get stats which are more targeted. A damage support like Brand or Zyra can dabble in Magic penetration. (cheaper than a deathcap) While Enchanters have heal/shielding power. Yet Zil doesn't easily fit into either of those two molds, and would rather have the raw AP.

Kinda for this reason, Zil will pretty much be better as a mid lane mage. (especially when he has the wave clear to lane) And to that end, it doesn't feel particularly effective playing Support Zil, like you would Mid lane Zil who is woefully behind. Rather, a support Zil should focus on what he can do without even relying on scaling. (The stun from his double bombs, his ms boost, and his ult)

I feel that in principle, the best supports should be the ones who don't rely on scaling. Thresh comes to mind, given his ability to catch targets, and lantern pull his allies, don't rely on scaling at all. With these types of champs, there is really only 2 such stats I care about. CDR to give more up time on said abilities, and mana/regen to keep casting them. Everything out side of that is a bonus. And one of the reasons why this type of champ is good is, not only do they not really fall behind, but not relying on scaling opens their build for what ever utility your team actually needs.

DeathBurst1 votes

That's all a bunch of generalities.

A bunch of generalities I agree with, mind you, but how is that relevant to OP or the answer I gave him?

OP wants more itemization for (Support) AP damage dealers. But there are already a ton of items for AP damage dealers. It's a bit expansive for Supports because Damage dealers aren't the best Supports in the first place, but AP damage dealers already have all the itemization they need, whatever the position they pick on the map, so OP's demands are a bit silly. Or at least they look like so at first glance, which is why I asked for more precision.

So I do agree with your analysis of support itemization in general, but yeah, what's your point?

ZaionX1 votes

I think what would be great is an item that makes it feel more like you're directly supporting and making a difference by using the item while also keeping to your certain build which in my case is AP, mana, and/or cdr (not necessarily all together). For instance there are many items that relate to what I'm talking about like item 3504 which gives nice stats to healers, strengthens their healing, and gives additional benefits to whoever they heal, item 3109 which gives tanks health and armor while also giving mitigation damage to their partners (probably adc), and item 3512 which is great for tanks especially if it is decided that armor and magic resist is needed more than HP and it allows the ability to summon minions basically; which can help in taking towers or playing defense at base when an inhib is gone.

To sum it up I think what I would really want for my zil would be a supp item that can help my team or just my adc by giving them benefits or a noticeable advantage of the sort while at the same time going down the build path that I'm trying to obtain so I can make more a difference from my bombs, my buff/debuff, and my ult.

That's why item 3116 came as one of the first items to catch my attention because its passive effect slows enemies which can help in a chase and other situations. It was also brought to my attention that item 3165 could be a good supp item for ap users because of its passive to restore mana on assist, its ability to cause grievous wounds which would be most beneficial when dealing with healers, and the cdr is great (20%) and a fast cd on any ult is always a great way to help out the team. I guess the only thing that would bother me about using item 3165 is that compared to Zeke's Harbringer, excluding the cdr, I'm not giving a very noticeable benefit to my adc such as a speed boost, def buff, or crit chance amplifier.

DeathBurst1 votes

OK, now I see your point, but I still disagree.

The thing is, Censer and Knight's Vow got some passive supporting the ADC because it's part of their user's job description. A Brand or a Zyra or a Lux, on the other hand, aren't really supposed to support the ADC, they are just supposed to kill the enemy before the enemy can kill their ADC, which is vastly different

Rainfall1 votes

item 3174 is just inferior to item 3107 and item 3190 . if supports relied on stats more the role would be more fun late game for the support player.

Fawksea1 votes

i guess i cant have an opinion on this cus i play zillean by his utility and not his damage, i hate being reliant on damage and as a support you dont get that much, guess i just have too much fun using talisman+99% speedups on my yi or making their fed hecarim go to 100 movespeed :')

Was really hoping they'd shape Zeke's up to be a more solid Mage Support item. Disappointed that it turned out to be a tank item instead.

BigBellBrute1 votes

Oh so you want to turn the bot lane into a support carry and an ADC support. Check.

No. Sincerely, RITO.

ZaionX1 votes

Actually the opposite I want to have a supp item that can benefit myself for the build I'm working towards playing an AP supp who isn't a healer (such as ap, mana, and cdr) while at the same time helping my adc to carry. Zeke's Harbringer was able to do just that it gave AP, mana, cdr and as an unexpected bonus armor and it gave 50% crit to my adc when it reached 100 stacks so it made getting baron faster and team fights easier to win for my team because of the unexpected power spike to my adc. When I say that this item had won me games I'm referring to how the crit kicks in and for 8 seconds my adc becomes a even more serious force to be reckoned with.

DoktorKaiser1 votes

No offence, but Zilean already gives me tumor with his instant ulti on a dying person to turn them to full hp for no reason at all, so I would much prefer if he had to actually go full AP and not get both AP and support items. Same for champions I play such as Brand or Morg, if you want AP go and build mage items, if you want to be full support then buy support items. You shouldnt have both.

AdeBug1 votes

not full hp u need both cus shit scales off ap

DoktorKaiser1 votes

Which is why you should choose - full AP for better bomb damage and the full HP ulti respawn or going support items and having low damage and a weak ulti. You shouldnt have both.

AdeBug1 votes

so ignore all shield and healing items, redemption and locket included? mk

DoktorKaiser1 votes

And its better idea that for example Zilean can have massive bomb damage burst, full HP respawn ulti on low cooldown but he should also have locket shield, redemption shield, ardent censer etc. That is just stupid. Hey I play Brand, can I get Rylai and Liandrys integrated into redemption and locket so I can get both massive AOE damage and healing/shielding. Pls RITO...

AdeBug1 votes

? I never said that, and you cannot have that which you call stupid, we're aiming for something in the middle

huh? You might not understand me, or I might not get u, or both
