What is direct and indirect damage? Riot please give me clarity

I seen this term thrown on Missfortune and now Malzahar, I am still confused as what does direct damage mean and what is considered indirect.

indirect damage is i suppose an aoe ability, has the chance but not the certainty of dealing damage, while direct would be like point and click abilities

I thought that too but in the demo of his passive, Sion's Q triggered the passive.

No it did fizzle, it says that after he takes damage it lasts for a brief amount of time and then pops.

so say you have it on and lb jumps at you, in the time she uses everything, his passive would have mitigated nearly all of it

Direct damage is damage thats not over time.

Potentional damage refers to damage that could be output but could be: A: interupted ( MissFortune ult damages in waves, every wave has damage, all of them combined is potentionall damage, if cced in the middle of chaneling the rest of the waves stop )

B: avoided ( AOE sustained damage like MissFortune E, or Velkoz ult. You can be in them for just a second and escape only taking part of the damage and the rest of it is lost )
