Blitzcrank is Anti-Fun
WARNING THIS IS AN OPINION I DO NOT HATE BLITZ PER SE NOR DO I HATE THOSE WHO PLAY HIM
Discussion is fine, but keep it civil and try to persuade me without cussing up a storm and insulting my intelligence, my rank, etc. Keep it about Blitz, not the person writing about him, thanks.
Yes, you read that right. Blitzcrank is Anti-Fun.
There's no getting around it, no excuses, he simply isn't fun to go against.
Allow me to explain.
First, let's go over his kit. His kit, to be perfectly blunt, is entirely based around one ability. Coincidentally enough, the one ability it's based around is the sole reason he's so obnoxious and picked so often in literally every elo, and why he is so difficult to counter. But, rather than go over his one busted move, first, let's go over the rest of his kit first, to show you how legitimately boring he'd be if he never had his Q or his Q would be taken away. This is important when considering how to "fix" him, or, in this case, how impossible it IS to "fix" him.
W: A speed boost that increases his attack speed and move speed for a short time before fizzling out and slightly slowing him. E: An empowered auto-attack that does very high attack damage and knocks up. R: A short-range AOE silence with a 100 percent AP ratio and a very short cooldown. P: A shield that activates when he's low health based on a percentage of his maximum mana.
Now, by themselves, his kit doesn't even seem very supportive at all. A movespeed boost that gives him attack speed? Empowered auto that does increased attack damage? An AOE silence based on ability power? On any other champion, this sounds like a typical stat-stick diver a-la season 4.
But guess what? Add in his Q: a pull that hits the first enemy and pulls him all the way towards him, and he's instantly support material due to his picking potential, and all those abilities mentioned earlier make much more sense. His W is meant to either set up his Q or catch up to a fleeing enemy and land his E. His E immediately is used after his pull to further isolate and CC his pick. His R is meant to do more damage and keep them from escaping. His passive is meant to keep him from dying if he so happens to be in the middle of a teamfight when he makes his pick.
Once you see his Q, you realize that literally every single ability he has is specifically designed to make landing his Q and following through that much easier.
Now that we have covered this, it is safe to say that Blitz is defined by one ability and one ability alone...his Q. His Q is the only reason he's good, and it's the only thing keeping him a solid pick. Even his kit agrees.
So, what is up with his Q? Why is it so good? Well, here goes...
The hitbox is terrible and abusable. I have seen his Q pull champions through minions because their hitbox was slightly poking through the minion. This makes it very frustrating and feel like it's impossible to stay safe, already making the lane unfun.
The ability can go through terrain, and has a long range. This means if you're trying to ward, you have at least a 10 percent chance that the enemy blitz is waiting there for you, about to pull you through to the enemy team and keep you from flashing, making it feel unsafe to go anywhere and do anything unless you know where Blitz is and/or know he can't possibly have gotten there in time to pull you.
The ability pulls VERY far, and does hefty damage. Good AP ratio, good base damage, and the follow-through pretty much can bring an ADC down to 1/4 health from a full HP bar with building no AP items. Disgusting.
The above reasons, along with the follow-up provided by his kit, make him the most unfun champion to lane against as both support and ADC, largely due to the fact that all a blitz has to do is land 1 hook all game and he can win, no matter how behind he is or how terrible he is otherwise.
Now, to top this list of gripes off, he also is very unfun to play. VERY boring. Making a champion entirely based around one ability is pretty bad design, and it really shows. Xayah is the closest Riot has come to a modern champion having a kit that is very samey, and even then it's only because her kit is build around a MECHANIC, not a single ABILITY.
As blitz, allow me to describe how the laning goes:
Walk around. Press Q at the right time, then press E, then R if you have it. Press W and then E again because E has a very low cooldown.
That is his lane. Nothing else. There are no fancy mechanics, there are no fun little tricks you can do, other than land his hook in various, tilting ways or by abusing the bad hit-detection and hitboxes in this game.
It doesn't make it any better that the only people who use him are either people trying to carry themselves out of an undesirable ELO who don't normally even main support, or people who want to make other people's games miserable (and I'm not just talking about gameplay, I'm talking about trash talking, spamming dance and laugh, and bragging about how skilled you are in post-game chat when you nearly always win or come very close), it just makes people hate him all the more because of negativity bias and because people associate Blitz with toxic tryhard players.
Now, I will say this. I am not posting this because I think he is necessarily OP. I ban him every game, but not because I think he's actually broken, but because he is extremely irritating and unfun, similar to why people ban teemo even though most of the time (barring recently) he's kind of terrible in the meta. He makes lanes a living nightmare for supports, as even if you yourself dodge every blitz Q, if you're low ELO like me, someone's going to get pulled. And when they get pulled, there is nothing you can do about it but hope and pray that whatever tools Riot gave you in your kit are enough to keep him healthy long enough to get out. This is often a moot point if a gank happens or you get 4-manned under turret.
I do think he has no true counter. Janna can shield and prevent all-ins from champions with engage, but blitz doesn't engage. Bard can catch supports and ADC's out with his powerful potential 2-man stun, but he himself needs to be out of position to make full use of it, which is where the blitz pull comes in. Sona can poke and heal from a distance, but it probably won't be enough early game. Alistar can headbutt people away, but he has to get in range first and by then the ADC is half-health (although alistar may be the one champion kind of close to countering blitz). Leona can engage, but doing it on blitz is dumb and if the blitz is smart, if you try and stop the adc, they'll save their knockup and smack you instead, leaving you both out of position.
No supports I can think of can counter a blitz pull, reminding me of the old phrase, "The only thing that can counter blitz is a pair of boots and common sense". Something which, early game in low ELO, simply doesn't exist.
Now the thing that truly sucks is that I want blitz to be interesting. I want him to be played more, but only if he gets interesting to interact with and use. In his current state (and, perhaps, his future state, as he is one of the original champions and therefore will not be getting any strict changes to his kit for a very long time i.e. annie), he is a nightmare to lane against, unfun to use, and tilting to see in general.
Oh, and Blitz players...stop being jerks. Just don't. You already tortured people in-lane, stop rubbing it in. You probably had some jerk rub it in when you lost before, and now you're stooping to their level. Just stop. Play Blitz, fine, you have the freedom and right to do that, but don't be a douche about it, OK? Thanks.
Let me know what you think about Blitz in the comments, and please, try to keep it civil. This is my opinion, and I don't necessarily hate Blitz or the players who use him, I just think it's a damn shame he's in such a bad spot.
