How does matchmaking work?

how does league determine who we go up against? because lately i have been getting put up against way higher teirs and im only silver 4, there was one game where i went up against a silver 4, silver 5, gold V, plat V and silver 3 (if i remember correctly) and we had unranked (level 29), bronze 2, silver 4, and two silver 5, how does that even make sense? i dont know if its because pre-season but getting paired with golds and highers while my team is just silver is getting frustrating

normal mmr isn't connected to ranked mmr. a diamond 1 player could have barely any normal games and with bad normal mmr meaning that they would be fighting maybe bronze and silver in normal. I find ranked to be much more fair in that way where you will get placed with people close to the same skill. normal is more random in that way.

Sheesh thats nuts, but i never had this problem before, not until i reached silver 4
