What's going on with match making?

I haven't played since the beginning of last season and started playing again recently. I've noticed match making isn't the same any more. What's bothering me and making me make this post is I no longer play against people of my own rank and when you were in promos you had to fight players who were in that higher bracket to rank up but it's not like that any more. All I fight is silvers and bronze no matter what rank I am. My MMR on op.gg says its normal, well was and it was actually higher, but I still had teammates and opponents I shouldn't be paired with. I don't see how its fair or intuitive to have silvers verse a platinum or vise verse. I don't learn anything, I have a hard time working with my teammates because I expect them to know and do certain things etc. Also, as a platinum I have a huge target on my back against my opponents and they want to camp me 24/7 because I am this rank verse them.

If I don't deserve this rank then have me fight against opponents that are and have them pummel me to where I belong. I worked so hard to get or thought I was getting out of elo hell, but I am still here. Silvers are insanely toxic, rage quitters and its literally a toss up every match, I have a 50/50 chance of winning or working with them. I can't take it anymore, and are seriously consider quitting again. Please bring back the old system where you actually fight people of the same rank and around the same mmr. So is it just me or the player base has dropped drastically and they are just pairing me with lower ranks for better queues times etc?

I had a promo tonight with a Bronze 5 against a Gold 1 (as well as someone going afk many times for short stints). Matchmaking is an abysmal failure. I don't know when they changed it, but the design is horrible. Instead of a steady climb you get these massive stomps on one side or the other. Even when it is in my favor, it is not fun at all. Riot continues to flunk when it comes to balancing the game on any level.
