Am I the only one who thinks Illaoi's E counterplay is a bit one-sided/one-dimensional? Thoughts?

I'm kind of confused as to why there is no way to mitigate the damage from being a vessel after being hit with the E. Either you stay in range and hope your spirit doesn't die, and still take damage, or you get out of range and start spawning tentacles under tower, at base, or in fountain or wherever else you think you can hide. Nowhere is safe when you're a vessel.

After thoroughly enjoying the changes to Nidalee's Javelin Toss width (it's not 400 units wide anymore), I am honestly worried that the only real counterplay to the Yowie's (because Illaoi looks like a magical australian sasquatch imo) E is the old "dodge the spear" approach.

Don't get me wrong, I love the mechanic of rewarding someone who lands a skillshot with damage and it's cool that her passive Prophet of the Elder God could be figured in, but when they're 1800 units away getting damaged by tentacles under their own tower (that towers can't attack, btw) ...Idk. That seems a bit dumb to me.

If you think about it, you have 3 things you can do against Illoai's E:

  1. Dodge it

  2. Fight her to peel for your spirit

  3. Run out of range and kill 3 tentacles [This is actually really, really easy to do. The tentacles spawn slowly and attack slowly. Wait the tentacle to spawn and make its initial attack. Once the hitbox appears, move perpendicularly to its attack vector and it will miss. Like you can just stroll out of the attack range, even without boots.]

As compared to a Morgana Q:

  1. Dodge it

Illoai's E actually has 3X the counterplay of most other skillshots.

I wonder if Riot's going to be tweaking her at all for the support role, in solo lane I can see this working, but it's a pretty oppressive strategy either way in any duo lane. I'll try it out in top though, and see how it works.

Yes.

Like why is there even an indicator of a zone created when she hits the damn thing if leaving the zone still gets me slowed, still deals dmg on me, and still spawns the tentacles?

Can they at least make it so you don't have to kill the tentacles yourself because I find myself zoned out of fights forever because people won't let me last hit 3 fucking tentacles because apparently they don't want the support to get the 5g.

It's called Test of Spirit for a reason. Running away automatically fails the test and you become a vessel. So just fight her instead.

Either you stay in range and hope your spirit doesn't die, and still take damage,

You got hit by a skillshot. You'll take some damage. You can mitigate how much if you can hurt her to reduce the spirit's duration. Or, you can avoid most of the damage by running away.

Nowhere is safe when you're a vessel.

It is if you don't stand still. Being a vessel isn't horribly punishing. You can play around it pretty easily, particularly if you pay attention to the places where tentacles can spawn and that nice animation that tells you that one is spawning and where it will be, and it doesn't take too long to break.

when they're 1800 units away getting damaged by tentacles under their own tower (that towers can't attack, btw) ...Idk. That seems a bit dumb to me.

Seems fine. If they've gone so far as to try to hide under their tower, it's their own fault if they're getting hit by slow predictable skillshots. And why would it be important for the tower to hit the tentacle? It only takes you two autos.

I am honestly worried that the only real counterplay to the Yowie's (because Illaoi looks like a magical australian sasquatch imo) E is the old "dodge the spear" approach

I think that massively undersells the options you have after you get hit by the E. You have multiple options for mitigating its strength at all points of the process. I guess technically you can't make it 100% useless once you've been hit, but that wouldn't be a reasonable expectation anyway.

I can tell you're not the kind of person who actually considers other people's viewpoints. IMO if you have to be disagreeable towards someone you don't COMPLETELY agree with, then your input really isn't that valuable to people who value collaborative thought. Thank you

I think there is a good amount of counter-play to her E. You can run out of range and just kill 3 tentacles, which is easy, or fight her until the timer runs out. I think the issue is in her Ult+her Q's passive, she becomes basically immortal for a few seconds. Just fyi i play Illaoi a lot so im not QQing about her, im trying to give input.

If you face Illaoi and you have trouble with her, let her push to your tower (make sure enemy minions arent inside turret range but yours are, pretty much the border) and just harass her from there and let her tentacles spawn. I did this with Gangplank and went 3-0 against her in laning phase. Also ask for ganks and backup your JG.

If you're melee you should be building pretty much full tank against her or you're fucked tbh. if you have a ranged poke just countinue as normal and dodge skillshots, strafe, change directions and do unpredictable stuff often and you should be fine

Input is appreciated, but as aeolian melodies has mentioned the tentacles have to be last hit by the vessel to stop them spawning. Bit annoying really. I have to wait until freeweek before I can actually play her and figure her out, so constructive input helps.
