Is Psychological Warfare A Valid Strategy?

(Note: This match is hypothetical; the events in this match did not actually occur, but is based off of a real match) The match went like this:

In the early game, the enemy team had a lead due to a successful invade into our red. They got a few kills off of us, as well as the red buff. I, the jungler, fell really behind, while my friend, who was going mid Heimerdinger, faced off against a Lux (who got a double kill in the early invade). As expected due to Lux's gold advantage, Heimer was beaten in lane and, because I was so behind as the jungler, could not gank for her. In addition, the other lanes were stressed too, and could not afford to help gank mid. Because of this, and the fact that we had a strong late game comp, I stated that we should "play for late game."

During mid game, Lux became quite fed, and began to trash talk our team, saying that we should "Uninstall League after this game," and "How did I even get matched up with you bronzies." My friend became slightly discouraged at this, and I consoled him by saying that Lux naturally counters Heimer due to his immobility. I started camping mid lane because, despite Lux taking our first tower, she remained in that lane and refused to help her teammates. After killing Lux for the 3rd time in a combined teamwork, Lux began to flame at us, saying "oh, it takes two people to kill me; what a noob!", as well as other insults. Worst of all, she even insulted her own team, saying "Noob team didn't help me" while my teammates were doing a perfect job of distracting the other team

Now, this is the important part. The way I responded to Lux's insults was by saying "well, this is a team game" and "if you can't work with your teammates, then you belong in a lower division," as well as saying other things about Lux's attitude towards both my team and her teammates. When the team fights finally got around, Lux began focusing and targetting me first, which I was fine by, because I was the designated tank for my team. Because the only thing Lux ever did was focus on my team's tank, me, it allowed for the rest of my teammates to pick off the other team, allowing for an easy win in the team fight. As we began to turn the game around, the Lux became more desperate and flamed harder in chat, blaming her team for not peeling for her and saying "1 v 1 me you pssys" and the such. I'm sure that by this time, her teammates had already muted her. We eventually won the game despite the incredible lead the enemy team had on us due to me playing on Lux's ego. After the match, one of Lux's teammates said "thank god the game is over, I can't stand this salty piece of sht."

Now, my question to you people who stood here and read this essay, is psychological warfare a valid strategy, or is it counted as verbal abuse? In my case, goading help lead Lux to make bad decisions, and thus throw the game. Other cases of psychological warfare I've seen in play on LoL is forcefully placing a person on tilt (looking up their match history, then camping their lane) and encouragement of "typefests" with their lane opponents, in which the person engages on the lane opponent while he/she is typing. Based on all of this, is psychological warfare a good thing, or can it be reported for verbal abuse? Please vote!

You could throw the enemy on tilt slightly.

Whenever you escape or kill them, type "lol". It gets to them.

I would not suggest going further than short, non-offensive responses to enemy mistakes.

Enemy attempts to tower dive you and fails? "?"

Enemy ganks you and you kill them both? "Ok"

Enemy starts insulting you? "o_o"

Enemy starts raging in all-chat after getting ganks? Camp the rager and put them on tilt.

Also, correcting people's spelling and grammar can be an excellent way to annoy them without actually doing anything that can be vaguely construed as offensive.

Going much further may give them justification for a Verbal Abuse report; Lux should have received several after the game for her behaviour.

Nothing you say you did should break the rules of behaviour Riot enforces. I would say that it was perfectly valid in this context, but you do have to be careful not to take it too far.

Yes, but with restrictions.

Singed - Psychological warfare expert. He spams laugh, taunt, and baits you time and time again into doing what you know you shouldn't do against him: chasing him.

Shaco - Psychological warfare expert. Pops out of no where and kills you time and time again early game, highly demoralizing your team. When you think you've got him, he blinks away into thin air and you have no idea where to chase him.

Anivia - Psychological warfare expert. I don't know what it is about Anivia's, but I swear they're better at using their passive than any other revive passive champion. They'll bait you to dive them, then just chill out while their tower/allies punish you for your over aggressiveness.

Note that none of these examples use chat at all. It's all in game emotes and abilities. It doesn't have to be champion specific though.

Veigar - I had two games a while back where I warded the enemy blue buff and just waited for them to get it low. Having blown their smite on Gromp, they had nothing to contest my Dark Matter taking it. Made me public enemy #1 drawing attention away from the rest of the team gank-wise, and the buff was worth it. A nice cage and the gank was thwarted.

I think you can do this type of thing with any champion, you just have to think about it. Trash Talking isn't needed for Psychological Warfare to work.

I'd say it's valid, but not in the way you presented it. That's just verbal abuse.

As long as your not doing anything that will get you reported, because if you do this. Your making the game worse for your team. Yes it is a valid strategy in other cases.

Heck, my favorite thing to do is gank top early (Usually the lane where most ragers are) and if they rage in all-chat. They just handed me a tent, campfire, and a ton of marshmallows. Cause i'm setting up that camp.

If not, go back to what I do normally.

Camping a lane where the enemy rages will make them rage harder, and usually results in their team being thrown on tilt.

I've been chat restricted the entire year thus far (as well as a few months last year), so I really couldn't care less. If you do say anything that can fall under verbal harassment (you belong in a lower division), obviously you'll get reported. Make a habit of it and obviously you'll get punished.

Definitely viable. I will camp for my winning laner to try to make the opponent rage quit.

I didn't read it, but from the title I have a feeling this may be somewhat related -- in Riot's words: Summoner's Code Agreement, Article VI

'To be humble to superiors is duty, to equals is courtesy, to inferiors is nobility.' -Benjamin Franklin

Having a great game is one of the biggest joys that League of Legends can bring you. But always bear in mind that when you're relishing that landslide victory there is someone on the receiving end that is probably ripping their hair out. While it's alright to celebrate, make sure that you keep any gloating (or any other mode of self-indulgence) out of all chat. Instead, thank your opponents for the game. After all, despite their best efforts, they just made you a very happy person.

Moreover, if you've just lost, avoid pointing any fingers or deploying excuses. Even if you had a great game, it's not alright to blame your team. You had five opponents in that game, and - seeing as you just lost - chances are that they had something to do with it. We all know that losing can be frustrating, particularly if it's a close game or one that's completely one sided, but nobody likes a sore loser. Instead, thank your opponents for the game, and take a moment at the end of game screen to ask what you could have done better. If you're polite, you might pick up a few pointers that can help you counter your opponent's strategy in the future.
