Runaan's Ashe & Caitlyn

Imperial Pandaa··14 votes·2,409 views

So correct me if I am wrong.

With Runaan's Cait gets multiple credit towards her Headshot passive, so long as bolts fly out from the Runaan Hurricane, including the actual bonus damage shot.

And when Ashe uses her Q it applies the effect to Runaan as well.

Why doesn't Runaan acquire stacks for Ashe's Q like it does Caitlyn's Passive? Is it because it is on a regular ability? Is it something similar to it not applying love tap with Miss Fortune?

It's either a case of the difference between an on-attack and on-hit effect (runaans works with the latter but not the former), or something special cased (eg vayne+runaans). I suspect in ashes case it's the former scenario.

Reasonable. I think it may lean more towards the special cased though. I didn't even think about Vayne's silver bolts not applying with Runaan bolts. They are both passive's on a particular ability. Although even that can be taken to the on-attack part.

Thank you for this bit of light.

Ashe's is an on-attack effect, so each attack only is counted once, no matter how many people it hits. I beleive Vayne's Silver Bolts is an on-hit, but it can only be on one target at once. It makes sense for it to be on your actual attack target instead of randomly decided from one of the secondary bolt targets. It may have been special-case coded to make sure nothing funky happens with who the stack goes on though.

Good example of this is Graves. He can't use Runaan's for triple shotgun.

I think it does work on him though, and he gets more bolts on his crits if I recall correctly. It's just a bad item on him overall. Reloading and low range, in addition to him already having the spread shot make it a very inefficient item for him.

I tried it (in a custom), and it just makes him shoot two bolts, instead of two extra of his normal shotgun attacks.

Vayne's is an on attack as well, as if it were on hit, it would apply runaans, OR it could be on hit, but because she can only have stacks on one person, it cancels out (but this is unlikely, as it would keep the bolt on the last target hit with the side bolts.)

It's special cased, so Ashe won't have her Q off cooldown after 2 aa.

IMO Cait shouldn't get the interaction, either.

ashe Q works like a single attack i believe so it only applies once so there isnt any difference from normal attacks with runaans

however it does work with black cleaver since that works with physical damage and it's multiple instances of physical damage

it might work with muramana but im not sure about that one

I know that is the case for BOtRK, I read it in the whole Q interaction thing that Riot posted. It isn't the active of the Ashe Q but the passive stacking it does before trigger. Someone stated that it would be ridiculous that only 2 AA and it would be up again, but this is also true in the case of Caitlyn's Headshot Passive.

BC, yes; Muramana, in theory no.

The others might be right with spaghetti code. Thanks for the input though man. Always great to hear ideas.

oh i kind of misunderstood then maybe xD but yea she would have perma Q if it worked like that

it stacks on attack i believe

and muramana has some wonky interactions who knows ill try next time i get ashe in aram or something

It's two fold.

  1. "It's either a case of the difference between an on-attack and on-hit effect" as Mysticman89 pointed out
  2. Riot has become TERRIBLE at consistency, so it could very well be an oversight they have no plans to bother changing.

Tbh I don't really think there is much explanation behind it instead of Spaghetti code.

Vayne's W is on-hit does not interact with Runaan's.

MF's P is on-hit does not interact with Runaan's.

Caitlyn's Passive is an on-hit but does not interact with Runaan's, but the stacking DOES.

Ashe's Passive is an on-hit that DOES interact with Runaan's. Her Q is an on-hit effect that ALSO interact with Runaan's, but the stacking does not.

Quinn's Harrier Passive is a targeted buff with an on-hit component, that when Proc'd does NOT interact with Runaan's.

Jinx's Q is an on-hit that interacts with Runaan's hurricane, Pow-Pow will even generate 1 stack per enemy hit. However any other On-hit effects will ONLY be proc'd by the main target and will not proc on the others.

Honestly if you ask me there is little to no consistency in regards to Runaan's hurricane and it's interactions with On-Hit effects vs On-Attack effects, and for the most part the item seems to be personalized for each champion involved.

Another point of contention is where is the line drawn at which passives DO and DON'T interact when used on Towers. For Example, Tristana and Ashe's do not, but Caitlyn and Jinx's do.

EDIT: Just a thought, perhaps the abilities need to be self-buffing in order to stack on towers.

On-hit effects that are consumed wih the attack AKA enhanced autos don't usually get copied by Runnan's bolts.

All the other ones are spaghetti code, except Vayne I think which was done for balance issues.

Must be a bug

it's the same reason that ashe q doesn't stack on towers, but cait headshot does.

Spaghetti code.

Just as a side note in response to some of the comments being made around on-hit versus on-attack stuff:

Something that can help distinguish runaans special cased on-hit interactions from on-attack is by playing with stacked rageblade, which if theres any special cases I don't know about them.

Vaynes W for example is 100% an on-hit effect and not on-attack as a couple people have said, but runaans is special cased because vayne can only have her w stacks on a single target at once, so runaans would never be able to be stacked if there was multiple enemies around (as each runaans bolt would try to start a fresh stack on a different target). However, if vayne gets a stacked rageblade so on-hit effects are applied twice, she will be able to apply two stacks of her w with a single attack (which while cost inefficient, is pretty scary if she gets rolling with it).

Miss fortune I suppose can't be tested this way due to it being once in a row per target anyway, but I suspect is technically on-hit and runaans is special cased since being able to focus one target while constantly procing love tap (due to the bolts resetting the proc on side targets) would be rather OP.

(Jax is really 'fun' to work out all the on-hit versus on-attack effects with for those looking to check their understanding, as he has a mix of both throughout his kit and even in the same abilities.)
