It's Time to do Something About Void Staff and Last Whisper!!!!!

Intro I am starting this discussion Because ever since season 5 has started, I have noticed that every one is building either Void Staff or Last Whisper (depending if they are AP or AD). I main tanks, and lately I have noticed that every one is building either of these items, making tanks useless. I understand that there needs to be a balance and a way to counter tanks, but there seems to be an over use and over powered feeling to these 2 items. What I would suggest is just reducing the percentage. By how much? Who can say, but would it be too much to ask for it to be reduced by 5%, its already at 35% (I think that's a little much). This causes the item to be a must have. Just play 3 games of league, I am sure you can observe and detect this pattern of over use.

The Math A character's BASE armor is around 80 and magic resist is around 40 by level 18. This means that fighting someone with out any armor or magic resist, you are having around 28 armor penetration or 14 magic penetration. This is more than most of the flat amount items for armor penetration and about equal for magic penetration items. However, even though the magic penetration item is almost equal, why would you get the flat amount item when its more penetration for tanks, and the same amount for none tanks.

Oh noes, an item counters another item.

So basically you just want some much MR, or armor, that you can't be killed?

Uhm, I'm not sure what to say about that. It's a good thing you're not on the design team, please stick to your day job.

Tanky tanks don't care about armor penetration. Even with Youmuu Ghostblade, Last Whisper and stuff, if the tank has 250-300 armor he becomes almost invulnerable to AD Casters, Assassins and the likes. Magic Resistance is more difficult to itemize, but it needs smaller numbers than armor to bring similar effectiveness (considering ap carries don't have autoattacks to complement their bursts or bruiser-like survivability to deal more shots of their combos)

Ever played a tank lategame? even with 500armor on Rammus you die within seconds to focus.

Seconds is a really long time to tank 5 people. Considering it takes about 1 second to kill someone in a teamfight, if you tank for multiple seconds you should win the trade... However, still calling BS. You can literally 1v5 with Rammus under their tower if they are all AD and give zero fucks.

Because of the way flat and percentile penetration stack, grabbing Whisper/Void is never a bad idea if you feel like doing damage. These items are not 'counters' to defensive stats. They are the best best damage augmenting items pretty much without question assuming you have attacks with any base damage to speak of.

If Void and Whisper didn't exist then mitigation values could be adjusted to reasonable levels to keep tanky folks from being totally unstoppable.

ITT: Kids who haven't played long enough to remember the S2 bruiser dominance phase.

Personally I'll take high action, high burst gameplay over bruisers shrugging off all APC/Assassin damage then watching a slap fight of the indestructible bruisers while you wait to respawn.

Usually all the flat items are better in other ways besides penetration. They have better stats. They are usually focused on the early game, when the values you mentioned are less because people arnt 18. The other thing is that armor pen only counts for you, so armor reduction or mr reduction is really good on tanky champs that just warm up enemies for the real damage dealers.

Last whisper and void staff usually set you aside as a dedicated damage dealer. Few tank champs can afford to get these items and stay tanky, and benefit more from the flat stats because they are not doing as much damage yet.
