A thought about Ranked standings

If your ranked standing is supposed to be indicative on your personal skill, why are all the advancement and demotions (as well as placements) based solely on the outcomes of team games. Where someone can have a great game but end up losing and then get demoted or lose standing, kinda twists the knife of an already painful loss. Does that sound just...borderline unfair to anybody else?

Maybe this is just because I main support, but when I manage to go 1-0-5 in the first 15 while watching my mid and top go to hell in a handbasket and we (surprise surprise) lose, I feel like I'm being punished for something I can't affect without abandoning my adc to a messy fate.
