Yorick; The reason why we can't have nice things

So, i'm sure you've all heard of this character called Yorick. Yorick, and no, i'm not memeing in saying I've legit barely seen this man since his rework. Why? Well, its because riot has done what they've done to him before this: Ignored his power and his ridiculous feast and famine problem.

But whats the problem now you say? Well, after his rework, we can all reasonably agree Garen and Yorick were about on par. Pretty heavy sustained laners built on powering into lategame with pushing power and a lot of hard damage, and would run rampant with enough HP and defenses. But then Riot recently did a Garen buff, providing an armor tear. Now, as I've gotten into playing a lot of Yorick, I've realized something: Riot just made Garen a better version of Yorick. While Garen doesn't snowball or push as hard, he doesn't need to thanks to his true damage effects and new armor shred, plus the bonus of not requiring mana, something ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE in this game. Yorick must directly siphon his mana and use his Q to sustain himself consistently unless he's gone full damage. Garen just has to leave a fight for a few seconds, and he'll start regening his health instantly, which can lead to a large amount.

Now the current problem with Yorick is that he's underperforming (Even with a 51% winrate, mostly because of his extremely dedicated playerbase, a whole whopping 2% playrate) Means Yorick generally doesn't have the tools to win or want to be chosen unless there are players who know they can absolutely delete the opponent toplane. And that's not okay. Feast and Famine champions have been notoriously bad and never healthy to the game. Aatrox is currently in his state because of it.

To fix the problem? Buff Yorick. Now, a lot of people would outright say "Buffing Yorick is stupid" but overall Garen got a buff without even desperately needing it, and rocked around the same playrates and winrates as Yorick. So why not buff Yorick? Riot is afraid of showing a new reworked champion as someone in need of buffs. They're doing precisely the wrong thing and ignoring Yorick because if they buff him after a rework, players are going to call Riot out for trying to dote on him and not "fix" other champions. What Yorick does right now is quickly assault his opponent with battering blows, but its all outright just slap damage: Not armor pierce, a bit of max HP that's almost non-existant. What I suggest is taking Yorick's passive and moving it to his Q, and giving him a passive called "Blessed Curse":

When near Yorick, enemy champions will continuously take mounting damage from his corpses. This percent will increase by 5% (for each minion, altogether) at a max of 20%.

What this enables Yorick to do is make use of his minions rather than just side gimmicks that he can use to push along a lane. If his opponent gets trapped, they should be more afraid of Yorick and desperately breaking his wall than sitting in there fighting him. This will incentivize players to land good Ws and press an E with proper trade, and start moving along their lane while applying pressure. I'd maybe consider buffing their HP to 2 autos (the monsters Yorick summons) so that he doesn't instantly lose his squad if they decide to mercilessly rip down the minions.

As for a counterbalance, remove his % HP damage on E in favor of just raw flat damage. Adding onto this, make his W have less HP (minus 1 or 2 at final ranks) so players don't feel desperately trapped if he engages properly.

Overall, tell me what anyone else thinks, and what they should do with Yorick. Overall, he has his niche but its so ridiculous that why play a carry juggernaut when you could play a teamfight carry Garen and demolish both in and out of lanes.

Riot just made Garen a better version of Yorick.

nothing alike.

t overall Garen got a buff without even desperately needing it,

garen had a 47% winrate and was garbage tier for almost a year, actually one of the worst top laners you could pick in any ELO above silver

why play a carry juggernaut when you could play a teamfight carry

Yorick is a splitpusher and Garen is an anti-carry. suggesting that either of them are carries is laughable.

yorick is fine where he's at right now. he does his job alright and he's got a good winrate for the players who stick to him

Idk man. As a Yorick main I almost never lose my lane and Im having a lot of fun with him. I feel like buffing Yorick will make him too strong, he seems pretty balanced to me.

I think Yorick's problem is his ingame theme - corpse raising is a bit too situational for my likes, and without them, plus the Myst Maiden, what the f*ck is Yorick? A Nasus? For that we'd pick Nasus.

His ultimate spawns corpses pretty legitimately, but I think he needs something else better than his current Q to raise corpses. And reduce his Q damage, because again, he's not a Nasus, it's dumb, why does every champion have burst? He could have higher corpse spawn rate (some other mechanic) and better "tick" damage.

Why should it be bad that only a dedicated playerbase is playing and doing well with him?

People who think such things don't have much experience on Yorick in my eyes. Proper use of his ultimate, as someone who mains him, can make him extremely busted to all but teams with pretty decent coordination. Basically, Yorick is an absolute monster when played to his fullest in Solo/Duo Queue. Only thing that needs to be changed about Yorick is maybe his passive ghouls shouldn't be one shot by Runnan's bolts and some minor AI bug fixes that make ghouls act a little strange at times (like freezing up for a second or so).

Yorick is in a very great state right now, and he's hardly feast or famine, considering that he has supreme utility to the game via W, E, and R if he is behind. W will always be a wall that can thwart opponents in team fights. E will always be a mild slow with %HP damage. And The Maiden will always be a lane pushing monstrosity that has to be addressed or else turrets start falling. So no, Yorick needs no buffs because the problems you claim he suffers from don't exist. Garen, conversely, needs to build bruiser or he's not adding much to the team. He has no CC, no slows, and he won't do any damage if he's not ahead. He's not as feast or famine as some, but he definitely cannot contribute meaningfully to the game as well as Yorick can if he is behind.

Garen is still garbage, Yorick is still quite good without being overpowered. Neither champion is particularly similar, and Garen is still bad Darius. There is no other juggernaut quite like Yorick.

I feel that would be great!
