Matchmaking?

I can't figure out what matchmaking is based on... Is it supposed to be mmr? Is it just rank? Just finished a match where the other teams combined total wins was 910, while ours was 241. Maybe that doesn't matter, but then again, that's a lot more experience on the rift (and winning as well). It just doesn't make any sense.
