R.I.P Garen

Hanple··31 votes·13,288 views

My fellow Demacians, I must inform you that it appears that despite our victories early on, we have lost the war in the end. Surrendering is becoming an option within our dire state, soon our mighty king Garen, shall take battle against the Noxian scoundrel Darius, and I fear we may lose.

(Alright i just wanted to sound like some sort of speech delivering guy, anyway yeah the chances are garens gonna lose to darius and that sucks cause now I wont get my BE and bragging rights. But I suppose there is one day left, never know but the war may turn in our favor. But if it doesn't, GG to everyone!

I mean, wolfie > lion and badass Darius icon > ok-ish Garen icon. The choice was clear.

For everyone else it probably also came down to Noxus is cooler than Demacia and Darius is more fun to play than Garen.

rtbf2256182416 votes

"Noxus is cooler than Demacia" yeah a nation that slaughters men, women and children by the score is "cool". They literally encourage killing those who can't fight back. That's their motto.

I think people are just borderline retarded when they side with Noxus.

Glaed Dras5 votes

Agreed. Tho Demacia is suffocating and orthodox, Noxus is way worse.

rtbf2256182416 votes

Demacia is painfully naive and control-heavy but at least it has laws to uphold what we call basic human rights for everyone. In Noxus, if you do not have the respect of strength, you will not have human rights.

Chembaron Yamada3 votes

I kinda doubt that these basic human rights apply to magicians for Demacians, tho.

i think noxus is pretty shit & have definitely been in some hot water, especially invading ionia. although they do accept magic, they use it for their own benefit, seen in Taliyah's story. she left home to find someone who could help her learn to better control her magic & a noxian commander abused her vulnerability & threw her overboard a ship when she wouldn't aid noxus in battle.

however, demacia is extremely restrictive & very controlling & biased against magicians—going so far as to exile anyone able to use magic from the kingdom, even a high-ranking figure such as Lux. in fact, it's ironic how Lux was 'recruited' by a branch of warriors from demacia to basically be their scout, considering it's demacian culture to look down upon magicians.

surely both have some (but very few) good parts of them, i think none is 'worse' or 'better' than the other in any way. i think if you had to choose one, it'd be the lesser of two evils. both kingdoms could use a lot of work.

It's called the survival instinct - you will either side with Noxus or die.

Oh wait, no, it doesn't work like that, that would be borderline retarded. Noxus doesn't kill just everyone that can't fight back, it would result in literally everyone except the Grand General (maybe the Trifarix with current establishment) being dead. Actually they ONLY kill those who fight back - that's called "a battle" btw, every aggressive nation does these (and the peaceful ones too, just with the exact opposite reason). If you don't fight back, you join them.

The only thing that happens to you is you will never climb up the social ladder and even that means only the peak itself will be closed for you. You will have to get by with some basic shit like being a laborer or a farmer or maybe a merchant. Noxus is not an anarchy (like Bilgewater), it has it's laws, they just favor the strong ones, ergo those with higher social status (which is the same as the other nations, except you can get stronger and move up the ladder unlike f.e. Demacia where your blood can't get more royal and basically the same in Piltover).

If they just killed all the weak people, there would be noone to serve and provide the basic commodities for the soldiers.

rtbf2256182414 votes

Survival instict? That's called tyranny. The Noxians are power-hungry primates given speech. They're basically the orcs of League. They don't care about anything but jacked up testosterone and fucked up brutality. They aren't low on any resources and they have a relatively well-trained military, while being one of the largest nations in Runeterra. What the fuck are they surviving against when noone knows about supernatural threats like Aurelion or the Void other than a few people?

And if you're going to tell me that Noxus will just let you peacefully live under their forceful rule as they destroy you homes, family, loved ones, culture and burn your lands to the ground then you've clearly never seen what war is really like. They would simply enslave everyone that would be annexed to their nation and put them to slave labor as reparation for the war they waged against them despite Noxus being almost always the aggressor.

Ever heard of the Noxian invasion of Ionia? Completely unprovoked, they came and killed everyone for no other reason than conquest. They're just animals with no sense of peace, harmony or humanity. If someone wiped them out, i'm sure Runeterra would be a much more peaceful place.

And using a social ladder is not really a great comparison to make. You climb "up" via achievements you make in your life. Ekko created a portable time-machine, i'm sure he'd be granted a science lab in Piltover if they accepted him. Vayne is a super-agile hunter, pretty sure Ashe could use someone like that.

Piltover uses a class-based hierarchy system yet characters like Caitlyn and Vi can rise up from nothing through hard work anyway. And i'm pretty sure both of them didn't work the farm for 40 years to do that. They both look like they're in their mid-20s.

It is only creatures like Darius and Swain and whoever the fuck else that the world has to bleed for their bloodthirst.

Evil Bisex Plant2 votes

Oh wait, no, it doesn't work like that,

You might have missed this line - it tells you I was not serious about my first claim.

You say Noxians are Orcs of Runeterra in one sentence and that they aren't low on any resources in the other, you might want to check things you compare before you actually compare.

Yes, I heard about Ionia. But unlike you, I also read about Ionia and what happened there, let me - a proper Noxian aristocrat - educate you about the facts and history: Ionia was supposed to get plundered only because of Grand General Boram Darkwill's age and agonizing fear of death. He wanted us to just steal and bring anything of magical might that could help him prolong his life. That's why it was so brutal, that's why it did not succeed: Because it's actually not what Noxians believe in. It was solely to fuel the greed (as you said) of Darkwill, an old madman, not to help the nation to expand and allow other folk in it. That's also why, in the end, Darkwill got taken down.

And to also support my claim: You should educate yourself about Roshka Gloriana val-Lokan (OoC: Holy fuck I actually remember that name, I only left Alyssa out), her people, her brother and father and their interaction with Noxus.

Caitlyn hasn't ever struggled as far as I know ("Born to a wealthy and influential family of hextech artificers in Piltover, (...)") and Vi is a lucky exception (which occured just because of personal interaction with the higher class), that's not how the society works and the four families wouldn't even allow it to change, I'm sure people like lady Ferros would make (even personally) sure the system benefits them the way it does/exclusively. Compare them to Darius and Draven, who both were born into the similar conditions as Vi but never created a relationship with anyone important - frankly because Noxians believe no single person is important ("I am no lord of yours." -Darius) - but pushed themselves to the top. Or Swain, who has been born into an aristocratic family (noxian aristocracy has formed under Darkwill as a toxic by-product) but struck to the rock bottom after his failures in Ionia and then reaching absolute top against all circumstances like public contempt - which in other societies would mean you are just doomed.

rtbf2256182411 votes

You really think i need to do research on a stereotype? I do not care in the slightest whether or not Orcs are resource-starved or whatnot. I'm not an old-school MMORPG gamer so i don't really care. They're the orcs of Runeterra because of their ideological similarities and brutish nature.

"That's why it was so brutal"? Explain?? It was brutal because...they didn't like doing it? What the hell? Describe a bit better. So these soldiers went and slaughtered everyone while being like "Man fuck this Darkshit guy. I don't want to be here. Let's cut that little girl in half over there! She's the enemy so who cares?"

Do you really think Noxians don't behave like animals in a fight?

And to also support my claim: You should educate yourself about Roshka Gloriana val-Lokan (OoC: Holy fuck I actually remember that name, I only left Alyssa out), her people, her brother and father and their interaction with Noxus.

I haven't read the entire fucking revamped lore, i haven't even read half of it. I don't care to either because it is filled to the brim with miscealleneous shit stories that barely have anything to do with anything in order to make it seem like the universe is diverse and expansive when really it means that Runeterra is not actually made up of 140 champions and their representative minions.

Ok, so Caitlyn actually worked for her success. Being wealthy doesn't grant you a high reputation among the crime world and it certainly doesn't turn you into a sniper. I'm sure she never had to struggle for food or shelter but that isn't required. The point is that she had to work for what she has become and whether or not she is wealthy, that is a high position to hold. Saying Vi is a lucky case...you can say literally everyone who has been "given" powers are lucky cases if you disregard how they have used them or how they attained them in the first place.

And Darius and Draven literally just had to hit the gym and practice killing to gain a position in which...they kill people. And if i noticed correctly, then doesn't Swain have a demonic arm? I'm not sure what his story of ascension is, because he's propably an outlier here as he seems to play Game of Thrones with the Black Rose but regardless, his ideologies are no different than anyone else's in Noxus - submit to slavery or die.

Wait but what about Ionia ? From Irelia's perspective they straight up invaded that place and slaughtered people for more land and resources Irelia

Z3Sleeper1 votes

Hmmm.... did we forget what Demacia does to mages or those that defy order?

And yet, Noxus thrives somehow. They have obviously weaker grunts. Their policy on killing people is more just if someone stands in your way, you have every right to attempt to kill them. The victor was the stronger one and the rights go to the victor.

This actually forms political alliances between people who won't kill each other and instead work together, causing Noxus to actually thrive here and truly form a nation where the strong are in charge, until stronger people take over.

rtbf2256182411 votes

You do understand that if you oppose someone and get killed for it, that means they want slavery and obedience from everyone because they think they are entitled to it due to how "strong" they are?

Their ideology doesn't matter in this case. It's basically what the Nazis would have done to everyone that was a foreign representative of their Arian race - slavery through dominance.

While i'm not defending them I think Noxus needs a lore update. It's kinda dumb and unrealistic that they're basically a bully for no reason. While Demacia and ionia are perfect

The outcome was so predictable. Garen lead for like 2 days and as soon as the weekend or "that time when the majority of the player base is on" hit it turned right over to Darius and stayed there. A lot Darius voters love to try to use the "Garen voters don't complete their quest" line but it really doesn't when the vast majority picked chaos because no matter how many quest the Garen voters completed it wasn't going to overtake the vast majority of Darius voters. I for one voted for Garen and I completed all my quest in a couple of days then I was just waiting for daily quest for the remainder of the event.

Eternal war where only the strong are afforded free will is not freedom.

Chembaron Yamada3 votes

I disagree. Darius' world means that we have to fight every day to survive and keep our free will. But "strong" has many shapes and forms. It already makes you strong if you are able to outsmart the others and simply hide your presence.

And I can respect the idea of "even if I am weak, I prefer to die to the strong before giving up my free will".

Pika Fox2 votes

It is not freedom for the vast majority of people, whom have the option of either dying or fleeing/hiding for their lives. The only people truly allowed to be free would be those whos might is uncontested. Everyone else has no freedom, just flee or die.

Chembaron Yamada4 votes

Question: so you don't consider a fish living in the ocean as free? Living in a state of "either flee or die" is actually pretty natural, we just forgot about it because the human has no natural enemy anymore and is on top of the food chain.

It depends how you define "freedom". For me, this is not necessarily tied to a life without worries and danger.

Pika Fox6 votes

Theres a difference between "no worry and danger" and "total annihilation through war". Imagine humans waging war, dropping nukes constantly. Now picture even worse devastation because these are beings in a world filled with magic and godly powers, nukes would be childsplay.

In a world of eternal conflict between beings of magical descent, no one is free. You essentially just get Aatrox's story all over again with the war between the darkin. I dont think anyone would describe the humans there as "free".

Okay first off the only one "free" in Garen's society is Garen. You either bend the knee or you die. Garen is the one who desires uncontested might. Darius desires a contest in the form of violent conflict.

Secondly human beings ect are social beings that form groups. So no the "strong" wouldn't be the only one with freedom, because the "weak" would form groups with the strong and have their freedom at the cost of needing to fight for it.

It's peace at the cost of slavery vs freedom at the cost of danger. Most people choose the latter.

Straight up man choosing Garen is like choosing to live in North Korea. Like WTF is wrong with you lel.

No, with Darius you need to bow to nobody. You need to be part of a group that can defend against his legion should it attack. You're free to join a group that doesn't force you to bow. You're free, you just need to be able to protect you freedom. With Garen only slavery to a megalomaniac and his dystopia.

Being free to be a victim isn't "free" for shit. This is the same shit Kanye West got blasted for when he said slavery's a choice.

Neither side is "freedom". This is anarchy vs. order.

If I'm being honest, my logic was "eventually the people who only wanted war will die off in the distant future and then people can do things like form societies again"

Garen just sounded like an eternal dystopia, but hey maybe Darius never dies to his followers or something.

Eternal War doesn't sound that good either imo. Also I don't think we got a comic for this one so we don't really know how Garen is truly like from a perspective that wasn't Darius'. We don't even know what pushed Darius to destroy Garen's empire. Garen seems like a reliable and good hearted person. My guess is Garen's poor judgement caused Draven to die in that universe or something like that. Then I'd probably would've sided with darius

Well written, friend, but this was decided the moment they pitted two champions with significantly different play rates against each other. On average, between 50-60% more people play Darius than Garen (I believe OP,gg had Garen at 3.8% playrate and Darius at anywhere between 5.6% and 5.8%). I mean, that’s not even a contest. The fact that they presented it like anything other than a laughably one sided war is kinda dumb. Not to mention we who lost have no way of getting the icon we wanted, either, even by buying it.
