Poll: Normal MMR and Ranked MMR should have at least some correlation

I see a lot of complaints about matchmaking and what most of the complaints come down to is the fact that NORMAL games are so uneven. Ranked games seem to give a much closer relation to skill. There are many reasons for this

1.) Normal games players of wide degrees of skill variance are teamed up together so both teams will usually have a wide gap between the best and worst player. Meaning you could have a bronze player against a plat player in a solo lane which is like auto losing the game some times.

2.) Players who mostly play ranked often don't have a high enough MMR in normals to match their skill

3.) Players who play in normals might try out roles or champions they are unfamiliar with. So while they might be a platinum Janna main in the support role when they are playing akali top it's actually like having a bronze - silver division top laner.

I've heard some rumor that Riot plans to associate the normal MMR and ranked MMR to a certain degree. Not so that if you're a diamond player in ranked you'll only face players of your caliber in normals but something like if you're a diamond player in ranked with a bronze MMR in normal then your MMR will start to rise in Normal even if you never queue up for a normal match.

I do find there to be quite a bit of difficulty in balancing this MMR issue. I personally don't want to see Gold players in my normal games. Seriously they take a break from ranked to ruin 30 minutes of gameplay for 9 other people. Even a gold sion main who wants to try out an alternate champion before he takes it into a ranked game. Well what good is it to him if he's trying it out against bronze and silver players? Shouldn't those kinds of testing be done against opponents of equal skill. I personally wouldn't mind combining the ranked and normal MMR so they are directly correlated but I can certainly understand why Riot does not want to but at a bare minimum I do agree they need to do something to bring things at least a little closer to balanced.

  1. Matchmaking in Ranked and Normal Draft are the same - they depend purely on MMR. As long as MMR changes that fast which results in players being matched together with high different ranks, but the MMR will still be accurate.
  2. That counts for both ways. If a player does only play one queue, their MMR is accurate in one but not in the other. This makes your suggesstion sound viable, if there wasn't your third point.
  3. Changing your prefered position and champions appears both in ranked and normals. It completely screws up the relation of "the actual quality of a players gameplay" and the according MMR, which is the algorithms way to describe the players overall "quality". As long as you don't have position or champion specific MMR, you will always have that problem.

Your points 2 and 3 are the reasons why MMR and ranks are not accurate often, but connecting the MMRs of both queues does not solve that problem in any way.
