yes Edit, you get charges for damaging enemy's of the correct auto attack type (I mention this as some folks are confused over how it works.) When you hit max stacks your not forced to transform. When you have enough built up you can choose to activate the transformation which remains for rest of the game, you can decided between both assuming you have generated enough charges from damaging enemy champs. Melee is for Darken and Ranged is for Shadow assassin. When transformed his other ability's besides 1 get modifiers. Q has no shadow benefits, and E has no Darken benefits. His passive W and R have different effects for both.
