Riot, it's time to remove the champion mastery level cap.

Total Violation··147 votes·23,242 views

Let's be honest, Mastery 7 does not mean alot anymore. I see it on almost every Yasuo, and a Mastery 7 Yasuo is not guaranteed to play well. And once you've obtained Mastery 7 on your favourite champion, it feels like there is nothing really to grind anymore, especially if you're a casual player who does not want to get involved with Ranked. Mastery emblems should be a symbol of dedication, and right now they're just an annoying emote.

So i feel like it is time to remove the cap and let the really dedicated mains level beyond 7. And i know someone might say "Riot can't make a special unique emote for every level..." And they don't have to.

The new uncapped mastery system can work like so: Mastery rewards are only given every 10 levels, meaning, you will recieve a reward at level 10, 20, 30, 40 and so on. Leveling up no longer requires getting S grades. Reason: This gimmick purely rewarded farmers and fighters, and every support main will tell you that getting an S grade is a nightmare. Every level now has a unique mastery point goal. Once you reach it, you automatically level up and get the rewards. Unlocking a mastery with Blue Essence has been removed. Rewards for leveling up: A Mastery level emote and loading screen icon for the said champion. A champion specific Hextech chest, containing atleast one champion related item. Example: When you reach Mastery 10 with Yasuo, you will get a Yasuo chest, which has a chance to contain a Yasuo icon, emote, or even a skin. Champion specific chests do not require a key to be unlocked. And also, using a Mastery emote now puts it on a 5 second cooldown. You can be proud, but not obnoxiously proud.

This new uncapped system not only feels more rewarding, but it does an excellent job at seperating the people who seek to level every champion to 7 and then stop playing from the true dedicated players who seek to have the highest mastery level for their main.

The Mastery system has been gathering dust for long and it's time for it to be repurposed and exciting again. So, Riot, let us level our mains beyond level 7! You updated the Summoner level system. You updated the Honor level system. Now, it's time Champion Mastery gets some love.

I agree with almost everything you said except:

Reason: This gimmick purely rewarded farmers and fighters, and every support main will tell you that getting an S grade is a nightmare.

It's really not that bad, you can get an S rank with as little as 0-50 farm. Farming as a support doesn't impact your grade as heavily as it does in other roles since it's more based off of warding, kill participation, and deaths.

I want my 69 master level on Akali.

This is right.

What CS you need depends on the kind of Support you play.

Relic Shield supports are the most CS count dependent supports due to how Relic Shield works.

Spellthiefs and Coin Supports can get S and S+ ranks with like less than 30.

Last season I got an S+ on Nami and had like 25 cs.

yep. I got an S+ on Rakan with only 21 Cs. the real way to get S grades on supports is to impact the map as much as you can. Get as many assists, as much ward score, as much objective damage as possible. Sadly it is very luck based, if your team is shit than you won't have a good KDA, but it's really not that hard.

Saianna1 votes

I always find getting an S on support alot easier than anything else. But that's just bias. Everyone has his own I guess.

JarodDempsey1 votes

depends on who/how you play. Getting an s on a support by mostly enchanting is like 5 times harder than getting an s by getting kills.

Saianna1 votes

I know it's URF-game so it's weird and might not count, but here's my story:

Played janna, got about 1-2 kills, 0 deaths, few assists and handfull of minions. For this I got S.

Yesterday played kindred. Had 17(!!) kills, 2 deaths, few assists and alot of minion kills. For this I got S- (my friend who assisted me had something like 2/3/20 and she got S- aswell)

I always said this whole scoring is kinda broken

If anything, they need to remove the Blue Essence cost to GET the mastery. I've already fucking proved myself on the champion, WHY do I have to PAY in order to show my mastery, when I have have already put the time in and gotten the S's, and use an in-game currency that accumulates extremely slowly? Their is nothing special or good about having to spend currency to 'prove' that you mastered something when you already have and have the shards and cp to prove it. I never understood why they game it a cost. I had to sit on 3 lv7 Xayah shards for a couple weeks before I had enough BE to 'show' my mastery.

or if you are like me, I own all champs, so i just save shards of the champs i want to bump up in mastery (cost = 0)

Z3Sleeper3 votes

Technically incorrect as the cost in that case actually equals the disenchantment value of that shard, but it’s generally cheaper yeah.

Zaghyr3 votes

Lucky...... I only have like 13 or 14 to go, which is why this is so annoying, I have to choose between mastery or a champion

If you really cared about the champions kit and gameplay and it suits you Blue Essence wouldn't be a problem [sg-miss-fortune]

I'm guessing the intended message is "If you really cared about that champion, you wouldn't mind investing the Essense into that champ." So basically "No true Scotsman," applied to Champion Mastery.

Why are you getting defensive? At this point you're inclining me to assume that you're poor when it comes to essence, Given that you probably are.

Zaghyr4 votes

I'm not getting defensive per se, I'm just really confused. What you said doesn't make any sense to me. And yes I am poor in essence, I only have enough to get about 2-3 champs, while i have 3 or 4 close to lv7

Mhm, Well I was saying I feel that its a "More thoughtful" way of expressing your love for a champion and devoting essence to the score.

Zaghyr5 votes

I can understand the sentiment, but my problem with this is that it feels frustrating instead of being an accomplishment. It is basically telling you to play a champion, get good at them, master them, and then you won't be able to show your mastery because it is behind a paywall. Getting 3 lv7 shards is already a grind as it is for some champs, but putting the mastery behind another wall doesn't feel rewarding, it feels repetitive.

Gold Grenade1 votes

I wish I could gift you my blue essence. You could buy the whole roster and never worry about blue essence again.

Zaghyr1 votes

How could you have so much.....wtf

Been playing a long time and have every champion in the roster. After that it just piles up with nothing to do.

Daddy Ants10 votes

Extend the system up to Mastery 10.

Here's my Idea

Mastery 8 = Mastery 7 + 500,000 total points on the champion. Mastery 9 = Mastery 8 + 750,000 total points on the champion. Mastery 10 = Mastery 9 + 1,000,000 total points on the champion.

I'll use my Vayne and Sona mastery for example.

I'm currently 1,181,881 points on Vayne so I'd be promoted to Mastery 10. I'm currently 642,735 points on Sona so I'd be promoted to Mastery 8.

Heckin Support8 votes

Mastery is honestly what should be used. The S system is flawed and makes people too worried about their KDA when they're trying to get tokens to rank up champions.

Total Violation2 votes

And after a few years the same problem will occur, once every one trick reaches their goal in mastery.

ºFerrAhriº10 votes

it never meant anything in the first place

Quepha6 votes

You aren't talking about removing a cap, there's already no practical cap on mastery points.

You're talking about creating more content i.e. mastery emotes and other rewards, and giving it out for free to a small portion of the playerbase. You're pretending this is so they can show off their skill and devotion to a character, but we already have that with mastery points.

Gold Grenade1 votes

Yeah, gotta admit though it'd be nice to be able to flash a level 10 emote when you're getting triple and quadruple stacked because your mastery points can be readily seen. Consolation prize.

Quepha1 votes

I think mastery 7 does this enough. You've probably put in a couple dozen games on the champ to earn that and you care enough about that champ to spend like 5400 blue stuff on it, that's almost a full champion you gave up for that emote.

In any case, the ACUTAL patrician BM emote is M'Pengu.

Gold Grenade1 votes

Mastery 7 is just too easily obtained really. I'd love to see this system be expanded whether it's based on mastery points or not. But if it's based on mastery points it would feel pretty nice on my main.

zPity5 votes

I think to address your actual concern (a yasuo with level 7 is still bad) is actually based on one simple conclusion.

Mastery is earned in a SR game at the elo the player plays at. So a bronze 5 yasuo one trick (i'm sure they exist) is a mastery 7 bronze five yasuo. so one day, he gets to gold, and still plays like a bronze 5 yasuo player.

I don't know how you "honor mastery" and "elo" at the same time. I'm a great gold 1 ahri player (level 7 mastery). I'm sure a diamond or master player who hasn't played ahri in 6 months, will have a better game than me. Should I be stripped of my level 7? or should they just have level 7? does it matter?

is it (champion mastery) for others, or is it for you?

good thread!

It's not a cap..

If it was a cap your points would no longer increase and remain the same.

hhaavviikk4 votes

mastery has never meant anything and never will, I can get 1 mil mastery point playing AP garen, it means absolutely nothing

Z3Sleeper2 votes

And the fact you can reach that with 0 wins and 100,000 losses too.

Sukishoo3 votes

They never meant much in the first place xD

Though, according to the skins Dev video there will be some new stuff to show off the love and skill we have for our champs, we just gotta wait a little longer.

Also there is no cap upon mastery points as they go on forever, what you want is more rewards/emotes. Which as I said they are coming with something.

I don't think LoL was ever meant to be a grind fest - as far as champions goes (like a MMORPG). Cause you can grind your account lvl to... infinity?! 🤔

Furthermore, you used "Yasuo" - as example. 😐 That's the worst example in League of Legends. Yasuo has the highest pick rate - and there's simply to many people who main him (probably the most mained champ). Tho, he's a "Kinder Surprise" champ. You never know what you gonna get with Yasuo. And that's becasue he's usually picked "just becasue it's free (not banned)" - not for counter-play (to counter mid or top lane). Thus, most Yasuo pickers will either go 18 - 2 - 5 (if they end-up vs a champ they can counter easily - which in turn - will help them lvl-up faster and reach the 1 shot crit/heal build/) - or 0 - 14 (that's usually the case Top lane - where many champs counter Yasuo). It's also why/how Yasuo players can reach a lvl 7 mastery so fast.

There's lots of other champs where lvl 7 mastery does show you have some skill with that champ. Or at least it shows that you played enough. Cause this is actually an issue in Rank games, as in: there's lots of LoL players who pick a champ they tried only once or twice in Rank games. And obviously, they end-up playing that champ "like someone who's learning the basics (struggling even)". And this is where Mastery could actually be useful - by making it a requirement for joining rank games (not necessarily lvl 7 - but at least 6 or 5).

Tie the new Mastery levels to missions!!

Like...

Syndra: Get 10 7 ball ultimates that result in a kill. Use Scatter the Weak 5 times against 3 or more enemies.

Shyvana: Get 6 Dragons in 3 games. Defeat 50 opponents while being a Dragon.

Nasus: Obtain 400 stacks before 20 minutes 5 times.

Draven: Collect 800-1000 stacks worth of adoration 5 times.

Warwick: land a 2000+ range ultimate 10 times.

I'd have too much fun making these missions.

My issue arises with the idea of Champion-specific Chests. Not because I don't like the idea. It's because some Champions simply don't have a lot of items to offer, especially newer ones. There's less reward to be gained in advancing Mastery for those Champions.

Futhermore, it'd be exploitable. If I own everything for a Champion, I can put them on the edge of leveling their Mastery and wait. Once something new gets added for them, I advance the level and claim that new item for free. The solution to this would be to make it so that the Chest does NOT guarantee something not already owned, but no one would like that idea. After all, who wants a redundant Permanent of something they already own? You'd more likely just end up accumulating many redundant Permanents if that's the way it works.

The idea is appealing, but there are flaws.

UnboundHades2 votes

the mastery system is fine as it is, you shouldnt be rewarded for one tricking a champ which actively screws your team over if they are banned

Sobx2 votes

A champion specific Hextech chest, containing atleast one champion related item. Example: When you reach Mastery 10 with Yasuo, you will get a Yasuo chest, which has a chance to contain a Yasuo icon, emote, or even a skin. Champion specific chests do not require a key to be unlocked.

Heh... You don't really want a higher mastery, you just want more free stuff. I don't really see the point of raising mastery levels, let alone making it uncapped. You already have "uncapped" mastery points, which can be seen during loading screen. All your proposed changes would do is just add work where it's not really needed.

And once you've obtained Mastery 7 on your favourite champion, it feels like there is nothing really to grind anymore

You're not supposed to "grind champion mastery", it's not mmorpg, all champion mastery shows is that you play that particular champion. Making it uncapped wouldn't suddenly make it "meaningful".

Leveling up no longer requires getting S grades. Reason: This gimmick purely rewarded farmers and fighters, and every support main will tell you that getting an S grade is a nightmare.

You literally claim that "champion mastery means nothing" and then you suggest removing the "s grade requirement"? That makes no sense. Also claiming that "getting S grade on a support is a nightmare" is just wrong.

The23rdGamer2 votes

Your main points weren't awful but I'm mainly going to nitpick at the two that bothered me:

...and every support main will tell you that getting an S grade is a nightmare.

Gotta hard disagree with you there bud. Getting an S on a support is not particularly hard, but this isn't the main point so I'm going to move on.

This new uncapped system not only feels more rewarding, but it does an excellent job at seperating the people who seek to level every champion to 7 and then stop playing from the true dedicated players who seek to have the highest mastery level for their main.

Counterpoint: The new design of the loading screen shows everyone's mastery points on their champion instead of just the mastery tier like before. I know this isn't the flashy content that you're talking about, but having a lot of points on a champion is certainly something you can show off. When I queue with my friend who's a Warwick one-trick people consistently will be impressed by his mastery score of over 1,000,000 on the champ. Similar stuffs happens for me on like Sona or Katarina or something.

Minarde1 votes

A vastly more important concern than adding additional Champion Mastery levels and rewards is finally enabling Mastery token drops outside of classic Summoner's Rift. Mastery 6 and 7 were added as a League feature almost three years ago now, and Twisted Treeline and ARAM (much less RGM) players still don't have access to them.

Riot's original explanation was that higher Mastery levels require a "higher competitive bar." However, Riot immediately contradicted that by enabling tokens in Normal Summoner's Rift. It's nonsensical that someone can earn Hextech chests (and thus paid skins) for good performance in ARAM, but not Mastery 7. It's outright ridiculous that someone can earn exclusive physical Challenger loot in Twisted Treeline, but not Mastery 6. Plus, as seen in the comments of that explanation, players had previously been earning Mastery 6 and 7 in URF.

If Mastery tokens really do require a "high competitive standard," then they should only be available in ranked queues (including TT). After all, in every other instance, Riot has maintained that ranked is meant for competitive play, and normal unranked is more casual. On the other hand, if Riot wants to keep tokens in Normal SR (and most players probably do too), then every (permanent) game mode should have tokens enabled as well.

Sorakas Pantheon2 votes

I think at the very least they should allow mastery tokens to be gotten in Ranked TT as like you say it has a competitive ladder also it is just a bit of a annoyance to get mastery 5 to have to go to Summoners rift to get mastery 6 and 7 just to go back to playing the only mode you really care about.

HermitKOo1 votes

NOT TO MENTION YOU GET LESS MASTERY POINTS WHEN YOU GET A "S" WITH MASTERY 7 THAN WITH MASTERY 5 WHICH MEANS ITS A TOTAL JOKEEE. WHYHYYYYYYYYYYY WOULD U GET LESS POINTS ???? WHJYYYYYYYY WHYYYY WHYY??????????IT WILL TAKE 10 MORE YEARS FOR A DECENT CHANGE?

Vlada Cut1 votes

Infinite mastery lvl's the way infinite account lvl works. TURN THOSE MILLION MASTERY POINTS INTO TRUE ART!

Jamyn1 votes

Old thread I know but I was searching around actually for this idea exactly as I had the same thought...

I'm one of those people who likes to play a champion a lot, fall in love with them, get them to M7, and then move on. I hate it, but once I get a champ to the max level to me it just feels like there is no more progression. I love playing Yasuo, Xayah, Riven, etc. But as a gamer who loves progression, I just can't find enough reason to play them often anymore instead of another champion where I could be gaining more mastery points. I like to increase the total mastery score.

IMO, the mastery points you have one a champion should be the level that champion is, although perhaps decreased in numbers so they don't get as extreme as 3,000,000 for example. Like summoner levels, if they leveled infinitely it would remove this limbo of wanting to play my favorite characters but also progress.

I know champion Eternals are coming out soon, but I am talking more level-based progression rather than achievement sets that need to be bought.
