Supply and demand
There was a huge demand for supports so I supplied it when I could not get top and I got rewarded for this choice.

Huh I see
never did never needed. No fill no life.
I just have a small handful of champs I like to play and I play them if they correspond to the role I'm playing. Usually I'll just have a second favorite champion than thats how I typically get a secondary role.
I'll play whatever tho.
I used to be an ADC main. When top lane started becoming easier to carry from (and bot became a shit show), I was getting sick of my top lane feeding their ass off and losing the game, so I switched to top. ADC (Bot) became my secondary role.
well, I use top as my secondary role as it almost gurantees that I'll never get it what with support being my main. Top is one of the highest contested picks at my elo so I rarely ever get pushed onto my secondary and I'm perfectly fine with that.
Top is my secondary.
As a midlaner that plays Cassiopeia, Ryze and Azir I don't even need to switch it up too much. If none of those picks is in a good matchup I can just Fall back to Maokai.
I stopped supporting due to my teammates playing TDM in most games, so going support even as secondary is a definitive no from me.
Mid is my secondary because it gives me jungle (and not mid) 90% of the time. I don't actually play it.
