Exhaust mid?

Iv recently run into this mid lane quite a bit lately and im not sure why, was there some kind of play in pro play that a mid laner took exhaust over barrier/ignite/ghost? Sure its all about how a player likes to play and their preferences but in my couple years of playing mid its the only time iv seen it multiple times in a day/week, or maybe even at all.

It used to be a lot more common, before they nerfed it. it prevents all ins and can often turn around opposing all ins more so than barrier could, on certain champs. You'd see champs like GP, Yas and such take it.
