The new Brittle effect is Mordekaisers wet dream
With Ornn's PBE release, Riot has introduced a new CC, debuff, effect, or whatever: the Britte. This will extend the duration of any inmobilicing effect on the target by 30%, and deal %Hp magic damage, scaling with the champions level. And this thing simply fits Mordekaiser on too many levels.
is the only champion from a struggling archetype, let's call him Melee Brute, since he lacks any oficial name. Simply put, he has no CC, and no Mobility. His fantasy is being this unstoppable monster that nobody wants to face in direct combat, but can be played with as a ping-pong ball by anything with some form of kiting, so Riot tried to compensate this lack of resources by making his sustain incredibly high, we all know the meme; always shield never die. This brings the old problem of sustain champions, they either have too much sustain and become unkillable, which isn't fun to play against, OR they die too early and are completely useless, to make matters worst, Mordekaiser gets most of his sustain in the form of a shield, so nobody can build against him with Grievous Wounds.
I am not saying that Grievous Wounds are a perfect system,
mains will agree when I say that having a 900 gold item and one single autoattack, from you or the enemy:
counter you is NOT fun. I am just highlighting
's greatest problem: he shares problems with other sustain champions, but ALL of his power is poured in that aspect because of his archetype, he has some interactiveness into it, as he needs to cast spells to get his shield, unlike other champions as
or
, who "only" (precise timing is a legit skill) need to click R at the right moment. so
gets even MORE countered by CC. Yes, he also has quite some damage, and his ghosts, but the first can be avoided the same way has his damage, with CC, which he has a hard time avoiding because he is a melee champion, and lacks mobility. And the second one is way too unreliable, getting a ghost alone his hard enough, getting the one ghost you want in the right moment... almost impossible, a VGU will need to deal with this problem too, but this is a problem for another day.
The upcoming Mordekaiser VGU can be handled in different ways, all of them are equally valid, and all of them can bring the champion in new and interesting directions, a Full AP mage Mordekaiser, who surpasses Death similarly to Karthus could be amazing to play, a Minion Master Mordekaiser could be amazing to play, but if Riot wanted to keep the Melee Brute aspect, and make him a true no CC, no mobility champion, Brittle could just be the answer. Brittle could allow Mordekaiser to be a super strong juggernaut, with really strong telegraphed damage and temporary defense: thanks to shields, damage reduction, or other sustain forms that have proven to be more easily balanceable than constant healing/shielding, and still give him a fair way to deal with kiting, maybe you could also toss a temporary Tenacity buff in there as with Garen. One of the things that were mostly disliked about the 5.16 Rework was how Riot forced him to work with at least one partner to be somewhat effective, having you strongest ability locked unless you had a nearby ally should have made his solo lane really shitty. But it didn't, because 5.16 Mordekaiser was just THAT strong, so they had to nerf him to the ground, and THEN make his solo lane stronger.
However, if Mordekaiser had the Brittle effect somewhere in his kit, but no CC by himself, Riot could make his solo lane almost as strong, but give him tools in a teamfight to make sure that his squishy targets don't scape from his wrath, which should be fair for the enemy too, has they would need to be landed by 2 different effects, the Brittle AND a hard CC. This would also make ADC Mordekaiser viable, and fair, by giving him and his engage support ways to deal with his natural counters.
For most players, Mordekaiser feels uninteractive, and people who try him feel they lack any agency to deal with range and CC, it makes them feel they are in the hands of either their oponent being stupid, or their teammates being able to CC them. His mains have somewhat learned to deal with this, by baiting the enemy at low HP, and then winning the fight with his strong sustain, or using his ghost rotations to snowball the game out of control and win before the enemy team can realice what is happening, but the learning curve that leads you up there is simply not fun for most players, and I LOVE when League of Legends is a fun game, even as a Mordekaiser main who loves playing him, I can see why nobody else seems to like him outside the fan club he has in Boards.
But now imagine being this Juggernaut, charging in as you bark orders to your cowardly teammates, yelling them to follow you into the frey, swinging a heavy mace left and right in the air making it seems as light as a wodden stick, warning them of your unbearable power, shout a terrible warcry which shreds their very soul, and because they were too distracted by you, a CC hits them, now they are stunned as you approach, everything they shoot simply bounces off your armour, fragments of metal start to fly in the air and cut their skin and flesh. You rise your weapon, feeling, even enjoying his weight, and it starts to shine in the air as you build up power, before smashing their guts with a single swing. But you don't just kill them, you go even beyond, you DEFEAT them, and CONQUER their soul, and use that power against their own allies.
I think that people would like to play that champion, heck, I would love it. What do you think? Discuss it in the comments.
