Yorick feels weak. Help me find where he is weak so we may present a reasonable buff to Riot.

I have made some discoveries about my self and others while playing league of legends. When I think of playing league of legends again it is because the champion I main feels good to play and is satisfying to use. After a while I got bored of this main. So i decide to learn a new champion, then I get bored of that champion. Then I stop playing entirely after this cycle repeats a few times. Champions eventually lose there fun, and then get reworked because they were not fun to play against or to weak to play as.

There is one champion who's concept I love but is not effective at executing it and loses his fun instantly. That champ is Yorick. He is a great lane pusher no doubt about that. But part of his kit is to have an undead legion at your disposal, and the few minions he summons don't feel like an undead legion. They feel like a colony of ant's with no numbers. Mist walkers and the maiden do hurt, But something about him feels weak. I'm trying to find what it is.

What I have discovered about Yorick is that most of his kill potential comes from his Q, not his ult. His ult is more like a weaker void herald that pushes a lane. His mist walkers feel like small back up but it doesn't feel like enough. So if he had more Mist walkers than that would without a doubt make him more fun because now he actually has an undead legion. But this might make him a bit too strong.

Mist walkers have great attack damage to health scaling and great damage in general so they are very resilient to abilities late game but always die in one hit from basic attacks and never dish out much damage. So if he had more of them, than your legion will last long enough to dish out some damage. However since more minions might be too over whelming if they stay with there current stats than maybe instead of more total minions, He can summon them faster. This way he could pressure his enemies with his own minions. Now that would be fun. The counter strategy to this would be to just basic attack the Mist walkers he summons as soon as they come out before they cause to much harm. You could also punish Yorick when he tries to go for a last hit with his Q to dig a grave. Since Yorick has to sacrifice so much positioning when going to dig a grave it may be a good idea to make the max number of graves to be 2 and then summon 2 mist walkers per grave. (still a max of 4 mist walkers.)

Yorick should be able to control minions. Maybe with the alt key? Than that would add some micro strategy to Yoricks kit and add a counter play option when facing an opponent that likes to last hit your Mist walkers as soon as they come out. You could make them retreat and stay back while you wait for the perfect moment.

Well that is all of my ideas. I am still on the hunt for any more problems with yorick weather they are op problems or under powered problems. Please leave me your input and ideas.

yeah he got a recent buff where his summons get updated stats when yorick levels up. which was a very needed change. I will look into yorick jungle. Thanks for the advice.

i wonder why. I am trying to learn how to be the best i possibly can. maybe it is just me playing bad, But i still find him inconsistent.

im just an unranked player but i could help with mechanical stuff lol, another thing is yorick is like a splitpushing juggernaut so maybe your macro play is lacking, thats ussually where player inconsistency is easiest to address

i'll add you in game we can play sometime if you don't have rank preferences lol

what runes do you like to run?

Bronze7Main2 votes

53% winrate. nearly highest one on toplane.

SuperNova00791 votes

hmmm. Interesting, I wonder what I am doing wrong if that is true.

Poke with e. If you land it, raise ghouls. Otherwise:

Don't raise ghouls in lane unless your enemy walks forward to cs or uses their movement ability

CSing with Q when you already have 4 gravestones is a waste of mana. Try to use it to punish the enemy for CSing instead

Try to freeze before you get level 6 so you can all-in as soon as you get your ult

I just checked a tier list. It says yorick is S tier. I am definitely doing something wrong here. but in another one it says he is B tier. which one is more reliable.

Though his performance is actually pretty good, I can tell you one thing about Yorick that needs to be changed, since nowhere in the wiki, official page, spotlight, or client does it say this is intended:

The way his minions take damage. First, they shouldn't be dying in one hit to auto-attacks. Second, they incorrectly take half damage from AoE spells, a leftover trait from his old ghosts.

SuperNova00791 votes

that half damage from AoE spells isn't left over. It actually makes his minions good. It is not broken and should stay. the thing that should change is that his minions shouldn't die in one hit late game. it should be like 3 or 4 hits close to max level. the amount of hit's to kill a mist walker with Auto attacks should also be included in his passive description and it should change with champ level.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

It is left over, or it would be in the information somewhere. And it is busted, or they wouldn't have to keep the one-auto death to balance it.

The simple answer is you need to practice Yorick more, landing your E, maybe using your E before summoning the walkers so they aren't killed before you do. 'Cause his performance is well above par.

SuperNova00791 votes

if you cast E before summoning walkers than the walkers won't jump to the mark.

Yorick needs more options other than just spamming Q. That is Nasus' job.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

Well that right there tells me and anyone else reading the comments what you actually know about Yorick.

That's just incorrect. If you cast E and land it, the target will be marked and any mist walkers you spawn immediately thereafter will jump to the target.

SuperNova00791 votes

Oooooohhhhhh really? well it's the only thing Idk about yorick everything else I know. Still needs buffs to his Mist walkers hit points (not health points.)

The Ecdysiast1 votes

Again, since his performance is fine all around the board, he doesn't need buffs to his walkers. If you're asking for buffs to their vulnerability to auto attacks, then you'd need to nerf their massive defense against spells to compensate.

SuperNova00791 votes

no you wouldn't. just do it without compensation. It's what they did when they removed damage reduction when zed hits the same target with multiple shurikens. They didn't do anything to compensate that. He was also already broken when they made that change so why can't yorick get some fun put into him as well. I don't understand why summons have to die in one hit if they are not ults. They should just take normal damage and have reasonable health. I do not understand why summons are so segregated in this game. Die way to fast.

I am not saying buff Mist walker hit points everywhere. I am just talking mid-late game here. Where his mist walkers power starts to fall off as enemies get attack speed. Mist walkers should heal yorick also so he can run around while his minions hurt his pursuers and if they attack minions he can go get a few hits in and then back off If they attack yorick again. That would be a cool strategy mechanic to add to yorick's kit.

Yorick weak?? He’s one of the strongest top laners in the game!

I suggest you get some more games under your belt rather than cry for buffs. Perhaps there is a playstyle or build you havent discovered yet.

What runes do you use? Are you good at landing E? The mist walkers deal disgusting amounts of damage if you force your target to run instead of fight - ideally by fighting them yourself, forcing them to choose between focusing your walkers and you yourself.

His ult isnt supposed to be a dueling tool. It’s more of a bonus - since it converts dying minions to walkers, its ideally used to fight while pushing a wave simultaneously, to provide a constant storm of zombie minions.

SuperNova00791 votes

hmm well i feel like Yorick sucks in team fights anyway. I came up with a better buff. Champions should have to hit Mist walkers more times with basic attacks to kill them as the game progresses and yorick levels up. Also Mist walkers should slow attack and movement speed when hitting a champion. like 3-5% per hit and stacks to -50% movement speed and attack speed. just that would make yorick perfect.

Friendly Ram1 votes

Walkers are really strong atm since riot buffed them to deal damage from the e hop. Also both versions of his q trigger sheen for maximum rudeness.

SuperNova00791 votes

they die in one hit how is that strong they can't do anything. they try to attack then they die in one hit. It is not fair to the yorick player and not fair in general. I do not understand why you are so against buffing him. It sounds like you are AFRAID to buff anything. No one accepts the opinion of a player but only accepts the opinion of a moderator and accepts it as true no matter what. Yorick is down right weak. I have to sacrifice so much positioning to dig graves and then after taking half my health in punishment I spawn Mist walkers throw my E and only deal like 100 damage in return in total from mist walkers and the E. That is just down right stupid and needs to be fixed.

Yorick is weak because outside of splitpushing he is useless. And splitpushing doesn't directly get you Baron which is the best and most effective way to win the game. Which means that what he is good at isn't actually good for winning.

You want to make Yorick good? Reduce power from Baron. And give power back to alternate teamcomps besides, teamfight for Baron>win game.

SugeMinPikk1 votes

Split pushing on the opposite side of the map draws pressure away from baron, making it easier to secure. The threat of your TP + the threat of an inhib is ideal

Automated Riven1 votes

Yes, however the problem is, that that will only work now if your already ahead. In which case it's not better for you to be Yorick. You can't do that if your behind. Because then you die. And if your behind Yorick is useless in a teamfight. So it becomes a 4v5 essentially if you don't get fed enough to shove permeantly

SugeMinPikk1 votes

You don't... need to be afk on the minion waves to have a successful split push.. The fact that the enemy team knows you're there is enough to send 2 or more to stop you. You shove a wave, wait out of vision, maybe steal a camp, put down wards, then continue your push after you see at least 3 enemies on the map.

Nobody can 1v1 a farmed Yorick. Except highly mobile ADCs. It is not uncommon for a Yorick to be something like 0/3 or 0/5 and still 1v1 a fed enemy.

A. They don't need to Kill Yorick to invalidate his splitpush. Someone just has to be in lane to stop him from taking the tower. B. If your team is behind then it won't matter if your splitpushing and tying up an enemy because your team loses a 4v4. C. There are many champions who can beat Yorick late game. A farmed nasus, a jax, a Fiora, Camille. All of these can go toe to toe or flat out beat Yorick late game. And as useless as they are at teamfighting (barring Camille) they will out perform Yorick in a teamfight.

Splitpushing just isn't a viable starategy anymore because riot nerfed the ability multiple years in a row because pros did it alot.

SuperNova00791 votes

I agree. Yorick is only effective if he is fed. Like most low tier champions.( Malzahar, swain) They need their base line power increased a lot in coming patches.

Yorick is indeed useless in team fights because he lacks damage and kill potential because his Mist walkers do not hurt enough nor have enough hit points. His minions should get more hit points(not health points) against enemy champion auto attacks as Yorick levels up.

SuperCommander1 votes

I hate when his ghouls die from AoE abilities like cleaves. Other than that I think they are nice. Dead in one melee I think gives good counterplay too.

Ðreamdate1 votes

actually nerf his split pushing pet.. it should be tethered like Annie bear and Mords ghost

SuperNova00791 votes

No. it actually is intended to be used as a distraction while Yorick does other things on the other side of the map. So I doubt that will get nerfed. He is meant to be the master of summons. Yet his summons still suck. But are the best in the game. Still too weak though.

Pandemic Punch1 votes

Yorick is stomping lower elo right now. So for the majority of the player base, he is very strong at the moment.

That said, the place where he is most weak is his inability to do anything if he isn't allowed to stick to a lane and doesn't have ultimate up. The only thing he can do is walk around, auto attack, and Q people. If his team needs him IMMEDIATELY, he has no dashes, unreliable cc, no speed ups, no self peel, and no damaging abilities outside of Q without his summons.

In other words, he is barely a champion if he doesn't have his summons. If he doesn't have his ultimate, the only way to get summons is for him to be alone in a side lane. That way he can proc his Q's on minions without teammates quickly shoving the lane before he can activate his Q summons.

The best case scenario would be to buff his ability to help his team when his team needs him.... WITHOUT making his split push even more oppressive. I don't think that is really possible with his current kit. They would have to change the way his abilities work and nerf his split pushing power at the same time. If he became really good at skirmishing with his summons, then he would be impossible to kill WITH his summons!

I don't mind Yorick being weak at higher level of play while being strong in lower elos. Us lower elos need an easy to play split pushing champion because no one cares about destroying towers at lower ranks. Especially side lanes. It is like they don't exist.
