They're really not, you must be playing the wrong game.
Mages do the same damage basically in aoe form, only thing they lack is mobility.

^ The difference in mobility sometimes allows assassins to get more kills from the other lanes if the other team is not careful, but in general a smart mage-player should be able to lane against an assassin and do better in the long run.
Nerf assassins.
I didn't want to play FIzz, cause he is a pain in the behind pole dancer who doges everything... But assassins leave me no choice. Time to get back to fizz
Fizz is an ap assassin, not a mage. Unless that's what you meant.

He means he despises assassin champs, so he prefers not to use him. But since the meta of mid assassins is taking over, he has no choice.

Gotcha, thanks m8!
An assassin is an agile champion that specializes in killing or disabling high value targets. Focused on infiltration, deception, and mobility, assassins are opportunistic hunters who find favorable moments within a fight before jumping into the fray. Regardless of the size of the enemy team, assassins specialize in positioning and artful killing. They strike when the time is right – no sooner, no later.
Mages are mostly ranged champions who prioritize powerful abilities over basic attacks. Typically mages are characterized by some combination of long-range, area-effect or high-utility spells to get the job done. A skilled mage can have a huge impact on any team with their versatile skillsets and flexible playstyle.
Need I say more?
Well, syndra and Orianna both seem to be very strong and common picks, so I really don't see what's wrong with mages atm.

Orianna, from my sight, was originally made a Support, but someone played her Mid, posted a video, and it kinda happened.
