Very confused about placement matches

Quick and simple: I was gold one last season, went 5/5 placement, got to SIlver III (wtf?) My friend was Silver III last season, went 6/4 and got Silver I (Wtf?).
So I thought I was safe when I got to gold I and don't have to grind again next year to gold, cause the placement match would put me at least in Gold V unless I got 0/10.... So now I'm have to grind ALL OVER again just to get to GOLD, not even speaking GOLD I.

Speaking as another former Gold player that's placed in Silver again, are you really that worried about climbing back to Gold? It wasn't that hard in the first place; second time around should be easier, if anything.

I went 5/5 this season and landed in Silver 2. Honestly it's higher than I expected, because I didn't even bother to get to Gold last season, just left it sitting at Silver 2.

If you get placed into that devision because you simply lost those game. I find this ok. What I don't find ok is when 4 of your 10 placements are 4v5.

Yeah, riot is dumb as hell in this department. My friend from school was silver 5 and did like 6 loss 4 wins and got silver 3. I was gold 2 and did 6 wins 4 losses and got placed in silver 3. Talk about cancer.

This is due to the rank resets. Riot adjusted this to place players lower than their last season division in order for every player to adjust to their true rankings.

The order of the wins matters as well. The first 5 games affect you MMR much more than the last 5. So if your friend went 5-0 in the first 5 games and you went 2-3 or something I could see how that situation would happen.
