Is there any true purpose to placement matches?

Hi, I was Gold I last season, went 9-1 in placements and got placed in Gold V. Should I be pleased about this large drop after an unreal placement record? What is the point of those 10 games if even at an excellent result I'm still a LOT lower than last season? I recognize it was a little too wild last year but surely these results are not a desired outcome. Riot pls

if you're a Gold I player in skill level it shouldn't take you long to get back

I had a gold 5 MMR end of last season in bronze 1. (played mostly golds and high silvers, but had a pretty even W-L record, just kept failing series) this season I went 7-3 in provis and got placed in b5.

In all fairness, a single game would probably be enough.

It's important to note that:

  1. Your MMR at the end of the previous season is the most important factor in your initial placement.
  2. There's a small MMR squish every season.
  3. End of season ranking are massively inflated.

You went 2-14 at the end of last Season, that's more than enough to drop your MMR significantly. You were on the fast track to Silver before your placements.
