I'm new to the guy and since I picked up the Dark Star bundle awhile ago I thought it would be a good idea to ask for advice on how to play

Advice for mid would be great though since I've heard he can be played there and I enjoy playing that lane.

when i played varus mid for a while its alllllll about ur mana pool and how much damage u can pump off with your q
you dont even need ur W stacks to do some serious damage later
start with 
then go for 
followed by 
essentially mid lane varus is looking to long range poke freely while staying ok with mana costs... means almost always max ur q to do more damage while costing same mana
cleaver as well as the yomoos active will allow you to fly up them in comfortable range while getting a few stacks on em then either E or R and snipe while they try to run the burst damage on a full range q with 1-2 W stacks with a cleaver procs and that much armor pen will surprise you...PROMISE
other then that u must remember u can out damage MOST not all but most late game with good cd you can fly off q's about every 3-4 secs so play safe if u start to fall behind dont let up too much farm with ur q while trying to poke and win the trade also a good starter item is the corruption potion which for some cheeky damage while ur Q is in mid flight chug a potion and the DOT damage ticks on the Q that was in mid air now thru ur enemy just a nice little tip there
also the max Q range when trying to be sneaky about ur pokes can if u go over to a side river brush as if ur warding it... then charge max q you actually snipe most ppl there a few times before they reallize what your doing, giving you a good advantage in lane forcing them to waste gold./ time hp pot chugging if they want them cs
when facing enemies like ekko in said top convo number one rule KEEP DISTANCE keep an eye for his E and his w is usually predictable and slow.. just start walking backwards most of the time
TL;DR
MANA REGEN ARMOR PEN CDR KEEP DISTANCE - YOUR A POKER NOT A FIGHTER
ps. if you wanna duel and fight etc like adcs then u may/will need to adjust your build

1.max your Q 2.Let it reach full range before releasing 3.combine that with duskblade and you can usually 2 shot anyone
hes my main adc
I usually rush then 
for the waveclear and onhit damage.
Lots of CDR, and Mana (like from ), seems popular. I guess armor pen too. I don't know much about when it's best to take armor pen or AD. has CDR, Armor Pen, AD, and the active is good for running away or getting in range I guess.... Get it early because flat penetration is potent early. Probably get 
early to get it charging. Mid / Caster focuses less on autoattacking (I think) so 
is probably good.
Stand far back and spam those Piercing Arrows (Q). Use ult to self peel, probably. I think you're very squishy and immobile so the range of Q is your advantage.

Probably take the Deathfire Touch mastery since you're not relying on your autoattack (I believe) and you won't be getting 3 quick hits to proc Thunderlord's Decree. I think. I'm often wrong.
I think a typical AD Caster page (like for or 
) is like:
9x Armor Pen Marks
9x HP/level Seals, or 9x Armor Seals
6x CDR/level Glyphs and 3x MR/level Glyphs, **or **9x CDR Glyphs, **or **9x MR Glyphs
3x AD Quints.
You can probably get away with the standard 15 AD runepage though (AD Marks and Quints) ....
I think 
is a typical starting item and you can activate it while Q is midair....

Watching Bjergsen helped me other times also. Maybe see if there is a video of Faker playing Varus in a tournament or something. The build will be out dated but his playstyle is probably similar to how is usually played.... I don't know.

If ur going varus mid or bot absolutely should start cull ... farm farm farm ... that item will win you the game if your creep scoreness be good
I recomend for summoners spells u run flash of course but dont run ignite until u get a very very good handle on him ( and even then ) he is a ranged champ so going in to ignite burst may just get you killed i recomend barrier you'll hit that lvl 6 and boom ...go for the kill ... bb...they'll try to damage and scare you off may even waste there ignite too you'll be ay okay if you have barrier
Alot of people will tell you go armor pen and yes go armor pen aka serrated durk items( if you already run armor pen in your runes page ) <if not go for sheen thats cdr and mana plus the damadge to q get the cs and land poke< if you get gud at that ull be piissing off every mid laner by denying them cs to avoid your poke and when they try to come back 4 it bam u hit them with the sheen procked auto
#Personally i recommended the sheen for varus mid its a great item
Where u go from there is up the the game of course but u have to have to get runaans hurcain to stack his % health damage on multiple targets in team fights

Lots of mana give me a break yo i laughed my head off when i read that garbage And manamun ...what... varus has % health damadge already trying to go for more is a hugh waste u could be using for early game pressure

i play bot lane not mid , usually a mid is gonna go something of this nature 
and he is played more like a caster instead of an auto attacker. bot lane varus i have a couple of builds ill go depending on game

then there is the old school 
So new to various that's great, be is one of my best adc's first of copy my talon rune page and my adc mastery page. Secondly forget their stuffed build on stuff like runans. Take phantom dancer and static shiv. First back with him you should have 2600 gold or more take your time and use his range to your advantage he is amazing for poking your opponent down. Buy the bf sword and ( I think it's zeal or sheen) but that's the second item you should buy on your first back by then you should be set.
as varus bot lane i like taking Q at lvl 1 , then E lvl 2 and then W at lvl 3 then max E , get one more point in W early and then max Q . Its easier to proc your passive from blight with E and it provides aoe slow and is an easier skill shot then Q . and you W provides reducing healing. typically as a varus you wanna go 12-18-0 with thunderlords because if you get your passive stacks plus your thunderlord proc it will do a good amount of burst damage. also since Q slows your moment speed while casting people have been known to get to reduce the self slow and make you more mobile. but the key to his damage is stacks of w proc by Q or W or R , you can use R to engage , disengage, or pick someone off.

The immense % health damage can shred through even the bulkiest of tanks. Varus' ult applies three stacks of blight, applied gradually. Successfully performing this combo after deathcap does ~90% maximum health damage along with very high bases and ratios from your passive, nashor's, and lichbane. You have attack speed to deliver the autos quickly, take towers down, and wave clear almost as good as AD Varus. You max Q because of how amazing it scales with ranks, giving you zoning for the early game. The damage only starts to fall off once your W starts to hurt, which is around the time you start putting ranks into it. Once you finish deathcap, you should be able to kill just about anyone in the game with this combo, which begins from a long-range, thick, rooting skill shot that ignores minions and has a very low cooldown for an ult.
I can't play Varus as an adc. Burst Mage Varus is way too much fun.
