Things I'm Seeing With the Pre-Season Jungle

So for the most part, I like the season 5 map as it is now - the jungle gives you many more options of how/when to Smite stuff, for example. But here are my two cents about some of the issues I've seen circulating around. This is less of a flame post screaming at Rito for screwing the jungle over, and more of an inquiry abot Riot's perspective and possible future plans:

  • The jungle's increased difficulty was praised as a way to increase jungler diversity, as opposed to Season 4 in which the only viable junglers were those who cleared fastest, could gank earliest/best, and remain relevant throughout the game (Lee Sin, Elise, Kha'Zix, Rengar, Master Yi, etc) while the tanks were left behind in clear times and leveling speed. My thoughts on this were that in Season 5, we would see an increase in the champions capable of jungling (high damage and tanky/sustain clearing in a more balanced manner). Instead, the general opinion is that the narrow range of "viable" junglers has merely shifted from those who the aforementioned traits to those with the aforementioned traits AND innate sustain/damage mitigation (Vi, Pantheon, Lee Sin, Warwick, etc). The tanks still seem to fall off, since slower clearing translate to more damage taken from monsters. TL,DR: Still limited choices for junglers.

  • Dragon seems a little snowbally. It's the most prioritized optional objective in SR now, and everyone wants it. This can make it harder for teams on the back foot to secure it. I wonder what would happen if Riot did something like, say, increase the damage Dragon deals to people based on the number of Aspect stacks they have? Or make it so that Dragon is harder to solo? I also see Baron challenged fairly less that once was, though this is probably because of diffusion from there to Dragon pit.

  • Poacher's Knife seems a little underwhelming and also has a very limited scope of use (invading) that blatantly advertises that jungler's intentions, leading to run-ins with enemy wards for days. On the other hand, Trailblazer and Sabre are both taken quite a lot for faster clearing and bonus true damage, respectively. This is probably more about Jungle Warwick, though.

  • Turrets are somewhat squishier with the abundance of bonus building damage there is, and the base turrets with Beams seem to be less threatening than they were purported to be.

And that's largely it. Keeping in mind that this is the pre-season, and that some of these issues are in fact being addressed on the PBE currently, I'm not raging, just concerned.

On the topic of turrets, I think much of the problem is the new OP consumable selection. The new consumables are insanely good. Not enough people have caught onto how powerful consumabes are... as soon as split-pushing with ruin becomes a "thing" it will get adjusted.
