Can Lux have two little QoL changes?

IS1a442cd69a169ed293a39··52 votes·3,517 views

Edit2: Well since they buffed Grail just now, she may be doing fine now. We will see.

Lux is pretty balanced except for her mana cost. If Riot decides not to reduce it, please consider two little changes for her.

  1. E can be detonated immediately after sending out and traveling, and slows enemies even during projectile form. Edit: The cast and travel times remain unchanged. Since people misunderstood, I have to clarify.

  2. W no longer has channel or cast time.

These two changes help her a lot from being melted away instantly by assassins who don't have a ton of gap-closers.

They save Lux from immediate dangers more reliably while keeping her balanced.

Please Riot? Lux item 3070

She has high mana costs because she does an insane amount if damage from a reasonably long range.

Lux out ranges Ori's individual range, and Ahri's range on reliable damage is very low compared to Lux as well.

Xerath also doesn't come with a refreshing shield that can shield multiple people either or cc that can stop multiple people. Xerath using all his abilities cost more mana than a Lux using all her abilities at max rank too, unless he decides to go into auto attack range for mana. Her win rate as a mid laner is higher than Xerath's, and she dies less than him on average too.

Orianna also has incredible wave clearing, speed boost + shield + slow for escaping.

Ahri's wave clearing and damage is way more reliable than Lux. Think of how her ult helps her secure kills and disengage.

Xerath also can stand much farther away while stunning incoming target. I would trade Lux's shield for Xerath's W. And no, by multiple people you meant 2 people with 1 halved duration, in a soft CC.

Xerath can regenerate mana, and you knew it. Have you missed mentioning about laning phase?

Xerath's Q has a longer range, shorter CD, higher damage, and fast casting time, compared to Lux's E. It costs 10 mana less, with his passive regenerating mana.

She can burst, of course, but her E costs 130 mana. This gate is too much for her laning phase, especially against opponents with effective wave clearing.

I didn't even ask for mana cost reduction. I asked for QoL as an optional improvement.

And no, Lux currently has lower win rate in or above Gold, where people dodge skillshots. Xerath has a 1.09:0.88 while Lux has a 1.03:0.88. Check your facts?

We were talking about range, Lux out ranges 2/3 of them.

You also need to get your facts straight, talking about only mid lane win rates only, Lux has a higher win rate in plat+. Xerath is under 50% where as Lux is at/over 50% average between her 2 summoner spells. http://champion.gg/champion/Lux http://champion.gg/champion/Xerath

Lux's Shield is what makers her a good champion in combination with the rest of her kit, you're just one of those ignorant people who only care about doing damage, obviously Lux is not the champion for you then.

Lux also deals average damage for a mid laner for a "utility mage".

Not really. You brought up "damage" in your comment, which was why I doubted you actually knew there were a bunch of champions who can burst much more reliably and safely in similar range.

She has high mana costs because she does an insane amount if damage...

I can give you the win rate there, although I see different statistics in lolking. However, I believe win rate is only one area of measure.

Lux's shield is great, I agree. However, I said that because you implied Lux's shield is way better than Xerath's W without further reasoning, just now what you are doing right now. If you start insulting me, I believe our conversation should be terminated.

A utility mage with high mana gate and long CD?

You are constantly trying to prove her strength in CC and burst without even mentioning her laning phase, which is the issue I have been mainly dealing with. Are you those ignorant people who only care about late game when it comes to balance topic?

I never mentioned damage until my 2nd response, I only mentioned range, mana and the fact Lux has lower average deaths meaning she's obviously safer. Xerath offers very little other than damage and 1 stun/slow where as lux gets a bind that hits 2 targets, a slow that grants vision and a shield while dealing average damage, she's in the middle of the damage department with other mid laners being behind her. This is all as a utility mage and not one specialized in damage only.

She doesn't need a dominant lane phase to be balanced and rushes mana regen anyways and still wins games where she's forced not to get morellos/grail first. She's not even losing to all assassins either like you suggest. Only Kat and Diana are beating her in terms of assassins, she is doing fine against Kass, Fizz, Zed, Le Blanc, Yasuo and Akali.

Champions aren't meant to win against every single match up in lane. She wins against most assassins and a fair amount of mages.

in your first post. Do I have to screenshot?

Actually, I agree with you on the utility part as long as you don't talk about "insane amount of damage from Lux".

My concern is her laning phase, which keeps her away from getting into late game, where you have been talking about how powerful she is.

No one said she has to be dominant during laning phase. Don't put words into my mouth to make me look unreasonble. All she needs is a reasonable mana cost on her E. Nothing else. You make me sound like crazy for buffs to her drastically. Please don't

What I have been talking about isn't even about reducing her mana cost. My point is if Riot really wants to gate her laning phase, at least reward her a little bit more for her late game. Those little more isn't even about damage or CC or anything numeric. Do you even think those QoLs are significant buffs to her? Not for me.

Lux doesn't beat assassins during laning phase. Since you did not give any reasoning, I won't.

That's not my post, you should probably check a person's name before assuming we're the same person.

You said she needs these buffs because of assassins killing her, yet she wins against all assassins but 2. You do realize the link I provided shows her win rate against other mid laners, right? She's 50%+ against all but those 2 assassins. Even against Yasuo who has windwall and deals physical damage so she probably gets Seekers/Zhonyas over mana regen/cdr, same for Talon, and Zed where she also probably rushes Zhonyas over mana/cdr. Meanwhile, Xerath loses to these assassins that Lux is beating.

So, explain to me who is really the one suffering against assassins, especially the physical damage assassins?

This is my last response by the way, stats show she performs better than Xerath other than when they lane against each other, she wins against the ad assassins and I provided her win rates against them while you refuse to accept she is currently doing well in soloq. She even almost has a 50% win rate as a support, so she is obviously not as bad early as you are trying to claim.

Long CDs... that's pretty funny. Having a half global ult that deals instant damage on a 30 second CD sure is "long".

If by 30 second you mean >30 second at max cdr and rank. If by half global you mean more like a third or quarter global. If by instant damage you mean... has a delay before hitting and is really narrow and easy to dodge....

Raid Boss Morde3 votes

A lot of champions who get to 40% CDR don't get to 30 second cooldowns on their ult. Also, a 50 base CD on it is absurd for the damage it deals. A third or even a quarter of the map is still huge. Finally, .5 second delay is needed for a skill of that power. From way out of range, a random .5 second opening for a dodge isn't usually possible, unless you have lightning fast reactions with 50+ dashes.

But they have a 3rd damage ability or a shield that also does aoe damage and what at least I would call better ults AND passives (except Ori's passive, meh). Also her "teamwide shield" is a slow flying skill shot boomerang that the people you're trying to shield tend to dodge with only 35% AP bonus and rarely gives ANY extra benefit by passing through someone twice let alone FULL benefit and lasts less time than similar shields from other champions (3 sec vs 4-5).

It doesn't deal that much damage honestly. Of course that'll be helped a little bit with 5.6 but you gotta be in range to hit them with something else first. Nothing about the opening is random.... And seriously her ult is not hard to dodge. Like just step to the side, it's a pretty narrow beam.

{quoted}

You forgot lux's passive, didn't you?

I mean a nuke from half a map is clearly not a good enough ult for you, or a passive that boosts her burst even higher.

if ally trying to shield an ally and missing it's her own problem, since people not trying to dodge the shield intentionally. Only 35% ap?! are you kidding me ?! it's potentially a 360 + 70% ap if applied twice, and there's no similar champion, not any other champion got aoe shield except of karma and she need to use her mantra in order to make it aoe.

I specifically mentioned her passive and all about it in at least one of my posts. It's kinda bad most of the time. The damage feels like it's just making up for her actual spells not doing enough usually. Her ult doesn't go across half the map. If an ally is moving and fighting like normal and don't know you're about to shield they often dodge it because you can't predict each other that well so it just happens, A LOT. And the other shields all do something in addition to shielding, last longer, and can't just miss.

Xerath got his passive and need to get in auto attack range to sustain his mana.

Ori got 3 times lower the cd at level 5 of her Q, so technically she using 150 mana during 10 seconds, when lux using 130 for her E.

Ahri is medium range, so she doesn't even stand up of comparison

Syndra Xerath Zed

Ezreal Velkoz Ziggs Orianna Karthus Nidalee

DemiluniS1 votes

She doesn't have high mana costs because of the damage she does, but because of the safety she has.

taking the time frame of 10 seconds with no cdr at level 5 ability, Lux using 1 E, 130 mana, 1100 range max

Syndra can cast 2 Q's, 160 mana, 800 range

Xerath can cast 2 Q's, 240 mana, 1400 range

not even gonna mention zed because he's a whole different topic.

Ezreal doesn't have any aoe, and he's a freakin marksmen, why do you even bring him here.

Velkoz 2 charges of void rift are 140 mana, and are 1050 range

Ziggs 2 Q's 140 mana as of next patch, 1400 range max, but also alot less reliable

Orianna 3 Q's 150 mana, 825 range

Karthus 10 Q's 440 mana, 875 range, also the range is much smaller

Nidalee no idea why she's in this list, her Q is single target, but even then it's 90 mana for a single target skillshot.

out of this we can see that lux's mana cost is reasonable to the range and frame of time she can use the ability

Rikari4 votes

Safety with range eh? Range also means that you have ample time and vision of that spell to dodge it,right?

Ezreal doesn't have any aoe, and he's a freakin marksmen, why do you even bring him here.

Who the hell brought up AoE? YOU stated that Lux's range is the reason for her mana cost. Last time I checked Lux only has one AoE spell.

Lux's E has a cast and detonation time, and with range its easy to see, without her Q its basically a item 3342 . If you are going for range it also means her passive is useless. 220 mana with 260(0.7) + 240(0.6) 1175 range with

Syndra can Q+E = Stun which she can follow up with ult GG. 130 mana with 100 mana ult. 250 +(0.4) + 180 (0.2)

Xerath pays for his range with cast time. Thats pretty much it. He also has a slow and a stun. 310 mana 100 mana ult. 240 + (.75)+ 180+ (0.6) + 200 (0.45) with 195 Mana every 12 seconds,soo...

Velkoz 's lowest range is 850 with a top range of 1550,WITH his passive. Basically a Lux v2. 205 mana 100 ult. 240 (0.6) + 110 (0.25) 190 (0.5) with 25+(10xlevel) true damage.

Ziggs Has range AND a wall hop, something that should never have been combined. 255(0.65)

Karthus 875 Range with a far more reliable ult than Lux. 120(0.3) but 2x if solo hit.

Nidalee 1500 range, 0.4 AP scaling,90 mana,6 sec CD.

Everyone here has a better chance of landing their spells at max range besides Ziggs, compare her cast times+projectile speed to theirs. Lux also has horrible Mana Regen.

DemiluniS2 votes

Syndra syndra's stun is much harder to land than lux's E, and then she need to get in range to burst you down with ultimate

Xerath is much more mana hungry than lux, since he got lower cd's

Velkoz you really bringing his ult as a range indicator? his range is slightly above average, and he need to channel his ult in order to deal damage with it.

Karthus paying with extremely high cd on the ult for it's reliability, lux can cast her ult 3 times without cdr, with cdr it's up to 5 times since karthus not itemizing cdr in his build.

Nidalee nidalee not even coming in comparison since her spear is single target

If you got such a big problem landing lux's E, she's probably not the champion for you

Rikari1 votes

syndra's stun is much harder to land than lux's E

Syndra's stun is harder to land than Lux's E? She can cast her Q+E at the same time for a near instant stun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=604bjNUgGpM

Now Lux doing Q then E: https://youtu.be/jNzB0bDjSAA?t=21s

After seeing her Q+E and Lux's Q+E, What should we compare? Cast time? Projectile Speed? Lux has a cast and detonation time. Tell me how an AoE slow is better than a ranged line stun.

Xerath is much more mana hungry than lux, since he got lower cd's

Xerath has his passive to give him back tons of mana with an AA every 12 seconds which is doubled against champions. Not to mention he has a stun. He actually can and does spam all of his spells and stay in lane. If Lux wants mana back she'd better recall. Finally,Xerath is more popular than Lux in the ELO where they actually dodge spells,I chose Xerath because his range and costs can be compared with hers.

Velkoz ?

And yes im bringing his ulti, his kit has a slow and knockup to facilitate a perfect ultimate, which constantly resets his passive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bc3t31rsR28 If you ever get that close to lux shes dead. Theres also the fact that lux cannot use spells to farm in lane. These are things you know when you actually bothered to learn the champions.

You're talking about how safe Lux is when this guy can literally blow you up behind his back line. If you want some max range nid spears just watch Bjergsen play her. If you don't,lets talk about her safety anyway. So a max range spear will undoubtedly leave you near death, right? She is an assassin and has to get into melee to execute you if you survive this, but then again that W reset with that Q damage makes sure you don't make it. Her spear is single target, but 1500 range with increasing damage. Since "Her mana costs are based on her range",I thought why not bring in nidalee.

If you got such a big problem landing lux's E, she's probably not the champion for you

I currently main Lux,so I think i'd know a little bit on how shes doing this season. I don't have problems landing the E,my enemies have trouble dodging it and i don't even use its full range.

TastyMmmYum5 votes

Insane? She has the poorest dps of pretty much any mid mage.

Let's compare the main damage / aoe spells of other mages with Lux's E. It's easy to see that Lux E has the lowest damage while having the highest mana cost and highest cooldown of any similar waveclear on a mage midlaner.

10s cooldown at all ranks, at rank 5 has 240 base damage and 60% AP scaling. Compare to, say, Orianna W with a 9s cooldown, 250 base damage and 70% AP scaling (plus moving her ball into position to cast it does damage as well). Syndra Q, with a 4s cooldown, at rank 5 has 264.5 base and 69.5% AP scaling. Xerath Q has a 5s cooldown, 240 base, and 75% AP scaling. Ziggs Q has a 4s cooldown, 255 base, and 65% AP scaling. Viktor Q has a 9s cooldown, 250 base, and 70% AP scaling. With evolution, it has 350 base and 98% AP scaling. Ahri Q has a 7s cooldown, 280 base, and 70% AP scaling, with half of that being true damage.

Obviously these are not 1-to-1 comparisons, but even so it's not hard to argue that Lux's E falls far short of the other abilities. The longest cooldown of any ability here, sometimes by 2x or 2.5x, equal or worse base damage in every case, worse AP scaling in every case, and higher mana cost in every case. 90% of the time the slow utility is moot because you detonate it immediately anyway if you don't want the opponent to just walk out of it. The other advantages are just so few considering all the disadvantages.

So no, Lux has next to 0 sustained damage to speak of. And especially since tanks are coming back into the meta, she's going to be even worse off.

And as for her shield, iirc, her W is the ONLY shield in the ENTIRE GAME that can't be cast while moving. Which makes no sense because it's the only skillshot shield. If you're trying to hit a moving ally, why wouldn't you be able to at least move with them?

Those are actually really nice changes, especially the W. A lot of times in close ganks you don't want to shield while running because you might get caught, but then end up taking some ranged damage or something.

Because these would make her even safer and reduce counterplay. Her E which has travel time gives opponents a chance to react. The further out it is, the longer you have to react. Being able to detonate it prior to the spot you're throwing it gets rid of some of the risks you take when using the skill.

While I would love to have no cast time on W, It's part of her weakness that you're cutting out. Lux can shield everyone on her team twice. The only downsides are that she has to stop moving, and it's a skillshot. If she can run away nonstop while still shielding, she'll be even safer, which is what got her nerfed before.

If she's REALLY in a semi-poor spots, which I don't believe she is, you're better off asking for her old movement speed, or capping her E mana cost at 120 or less.

Her E remains the same traveling time, you still have plenty of time to react if you are not close. Think of vel's Q.

Nah what they really need to do is give her bonus movement speed while slowing someone with E. That'd totally be a fair change~

But in all seriousness all the girl needs is some mana cost adjustments, especially on her E. It's more mana than her ult, which is absurd. With such long CDs and her lack of mobility it's kind of stupid she also goes oom so easily.

Also slowing people while her E travels would be kinda busted imo.

Penguin Eclipse2 votes

This has been pretty much beaten to death but apparently people still don't get it. Allowing immediate detonation of her E would be OP. Plain and simple. When they allowed it on Gragas they also nerfed the range. Lux is a long range mage. It would truly be a shame if her identity had to be changed because of a buff on E that isn't actually necessary. There are other ways to tweak the ability without breaking it.

The traveling time remains unchanged, how is it game breaking? Gragas also has a dash and area knock. He is much safer than Lux.

You didn't even reason for why detonation would be op.

Her E remains the same traveling time, you still have plenty of time to react if you are not close. Think of vel's Q.

Her nerfs almost revolved around ult. She got nerfed mainly due to her ult. Now the grail was nerfed and morello got a price increase, which is why she struggles during laning phase.

Because it would be too hard to dodge. VelKoz's Q is a straight line that can be blocked by a minion. Nothing alike.

I pointed out Vel's Q only to explain why it technically works. They are different of course.

People can still dodge it just like how you dodge any other skillshots when you see the casting movement. You don't dodge skillshots by the delay, but by the moment you notice the cast. Her E will only becomes slightly harder to dodge, but it fixes the problem how she can't slow incoming assassins fast enough.

Why is this thread filled with Lux QQ when she is balanced and virtually un-played? Those QoL changes the OP presented weren't even that big of a thing. Yeah she does good damage and has a shield and a single CC, but she's killed so easily by even a full tank. A good Lux player is hard to gank, but a good ganker will kill a good Lux player.

Anyway, my question is why Lux hasn't been on the radar for Riot since patch 4.13 and hasn't seen a new skin since Steel Legion even though Riot said they'd be working on a better skin to appeal to Lux fans "not so far off" after the release of SL. It's been two years and no new skin. I'M MAD.

I know right. The thread is getting a decent number of upvotes, but supporting comments are rare somehow. Instead, most people are talking about how strong, unkillable, and annoying she is. I didn't even mention about reducing her mana cost, then people lost their minds and whined about her..

Anyways, I am mad for the skins too. The recent skins are just so unsatisfactory.

To be honest i wish Riot gave her a try on her W, but to work like Ez E.. She would cast it and with a re-click she would teleport/blink herself to the point where her staff was.. if not by the return of the staff she would shield herself + any allies it touched..

idk.. my 2 cents.. food for thought

Giving her a blink would make her very op though.

W no longer has channel or cast time.

This needs to be a thing. Champions like Lux that lack mobility and are really squishy shouldn't have a cast time on their defensive spell. Most of the times you have to decide between not shielding yourself or risking to get caught in these ~0.3 seconds you have to stop moving.

When the enemy Zed is chasing you, you can't stop to cast a Q or he will probably have time to get in range to use his R, avoid your Q and destroy you.

QoL stands for quality of life, these are not QoL buffs they are utility buffs, a quality of life buff would be something like making Viktors E or Galio Q go in the target direction at max range even if the mouse cursor was outside of the abilities max range. QoL makes skills more consistent and reliable, Utility buffs give more options on how a skill can be used, base and scaling number buffs are pretty self explanatory.

As a very big Lux player, I can say Lux is fine and perfectly balanced except from one thing:

Her ultimate hitbox.

Sometimes enemy is in the middle of the ult and doesn't get damaged.

What if I told you that a few seasons ago, Lux was pick or ban at the Pro Level? Then what if I told you that the only nerf she received was a move speed nerf? Basically, Lux's kit is insanely strong and Riot hasn't changed it at all; in fact, its been buffed with the passive change a while ago and the ulti bug fix this patch.

I don't think she needs to be buffed until people actually start playing her again so they can get some data on her. Outside of ARAM, i haven't seen a Lux in a long time; and I am willing to bet that its not her kit thats the problem.

What if I told you she isn't seen in pro play nor solo q very often for a reason, which is not "Outside of ARAM, i haven't seen a Lux in a long time; and I am willing to bet that its not her kit thats the problem."

You are missing too much information. Please, don't bet on something you aren't clear about.

I may think she is nearly balanced, and maybe perfectly balanced after the recent buff to grail, but please make it easier for others to agree with you by providing valid points.

And oh, something unchanged doesn't mean its power is unchanged too. Think of how Zed became OP after mages got hit and tanks wasn't relevant. Some people even claimed he had been UP before other roles changed.

The only people oposing Lux buffs are oblivious bronzies who cant dodge skillshots. Her damage is very mediocre when shes not fed and even then an hourglass/banshees/qss/mr counters her full combo. People in plat+ know how to stay away from fog of war and ward to prevent being 1 shot from range. With the tank meta comming up she'll be even worse off. She cant even 1 shot caster minions for gods sake. Her ult is stupidly easy to dodge if you're expecting it/use mobility. So is her bind and E. If she cant one shot someone she's useless. Her sustained damage is crap. Her mana costs are ridiculous. She went from being a top pick in season 3(2?) to not being picked at all. She needs something.
