Mana Passives (Lissandra, Xerath, Etc.)

Champions like Lissandra Xerath should get new passives, i think its a pretty lame passive. Lissandra is questionable at best, I'm a big fan of her and think shes fine now, but I just like to say their passives are just boring and could be something else...

Syndra doesn't even HAVE a passive. But yeah, these passives that only matter during the first 10 minutes of the game are really lame. I guess Xerath's is ok now with the shift away from mana regen in mid lane to just huge mana pools, but Lissandra's never feels impactful. "Yay, I saved 60 mana!"

Viktor doesn't have a passive either. He has an item.

Yes, it's a strong item, but it does result in him having an empty passive slot and one fewer slot to use for pink wards.

I'd like xerath to have his old passive back, it'd at least make him more viable against these all physical attack damage teams. For those of you newer players that didn't see his release, his passive was kind of a reverse galio, gaining 20% bonus armor based on his ability power.

Sound absurd? It was nerfed to 10% shortly after, then tweaked to 15% the patch afterwords as it made him too weak. Think it's overpowered? Marksmen & assassins have more penetration items now than ever before, along with free damage bonuses in masteries that didn't exist back then. As well as nearly every mage item giving significantly more ability power back then too. It's also worth mentioning he also had a self-rooting mechanic making his timing & positioning important, before his unnecessary rework.

So in short even if his passive was reverted to the original +20% armor from AP, he still wouldn't be as strong as he used to be; but at least he'd be an interesting choice to counter the zeds & yasous & marksmen that aren't banned.

that and he had mr shred which was so nice, as there is a lack of mr pen items.

Such as, .... ?

It's a gameplay passive. Xerath isn't fair if he doesn't need to auto

Lissandra's is what allows her to flex pick to top lane. Changing that passive would probably make her only viable in mid lane.

Xerath's makes him actually want to get into auto attack range of the enemy, do you really want Xerath to only sit at his max range the entire lane phase?

I disagree somewhat with Lissandra. Her mana stats are shite because of her passive, so if she didn't have the passive she would presumably get buffs. Because of that I would expect her to still be viable in top with a different passive.

For Xerath, I've had this argument a lot. Xerath mains just don't seem to understand that it's needed. It becomes un-interactive for the opponent if he doesn't need to auto for mana.

Removing her passive, then reducing her mana costs by the average amount that is saved by her passive does not produce the same mana pattern she currently has.

Her passive gives her a free spellcast every 18 seconds, reduced when she CCs targets so it can get down to 15-17 seconds or less.

In mid lane that qualifies as "nice" as you need to cast your spells a lot to try and push the wave to get breathing room to roam, maybe 25% of your spells end up free, allowing your mana pool to last as if it were 33% larger. If her passive was removed she would probably be rebalanced so her mana expenditure in mid lane stayed the same.

But in top lane where you're more isolated it is a godsend. You don't always want to be pushing the lane because it's so much longer if you get ganked. You generally only want to harass with the most mana efficient pattern available to you as opposed to a combo because going back to base and walking out to lane could cost you almost an entire kill's worth of cs. When you cast your spells less often and more efficiently, you can easily get to 40-50% of your casts in lane being free, that can make your mana pool as if it was double its current size (compared to mid lane, your effective mana pool would be 50% larger). In a conservative casting pattern, Lissandra's mana pool stretches much farther than any other mage and without that efficiency boost she would do what most mages end up doing in top lane and be forced to leave lane and give up cs no matter how sparingly they use their spells.

Ignoring that I disagree on with how top lane is played out atm, it's not only her costs, but her regen that are significantly different (can't recall mana pool, from memory it's fairly standard). Regardless, you can achieve the same result with regen.

Now you've changed her cast patterns. Her passive effectively gives her mana by making her want to cast a spell for free, regen would give it regardless.

I think everyone prefers a mechanic that encourages casting spells, interacting with the enemy, the fun parts of the game.

They're largely equivalent in their output. Her passive of cast a spell for free every X seconds is basically the same as get mana every X seconds. Sounds a lot like regen. There is a slight variation/deviation because the spells are not the same cost, but do achieve a very similar play pattern.

It's not even close because she has to cast the spell to get the benefit. If it was flat mana regeneration she could stand there for 30 seconds doing nothing but auto attacking for the same benefit.

BloodyTompon1 votes

She could, but that rarely happens. Walking to lane and waiting for a team fight (both where she already has pretty much full mana) are the main situations where that would happen. Lane freezes aren't that common anymore. None of those situations have changed play pattens going from current passive to added regen either.

However, it WOULD be cool if that auto-attack also would shred maybe 20 MR for 3 seconds, to give trading with Xerath in lane, in AA range a bit more risk IF he hits his spells - and just so his passive feels powerful and not like a handicap :)

Alüe1 votes

mr shred was incorporated in his old kit, they should give it back. However it needs to work off range, as to not incorporate xerath building tanky ap and blowing targets up close range (happened in the past)

Tbh as an xerath main that passive is weak asf. un-interactive is the excuse a majority of players give. Without his current passive he would go oom fairly fast. End game potential he just sits back and pokes. considering a majority of xerath mains incorporate tear into there build, his passive is sort of useless end game.

Alüe1 votes

You mean like Zed with how safe he can farm cs? or Leblanc that can just zone out players with no counter play? even if they did remove his passive xerath would go oom pretty quickly. End game would be the only situation where that would occur and considering that most xeraths build a tear into there builds that is already the case.
