So we went against this Ascension strat that forced an infinite game...

38 minutes and the only reason that it ended was because they surrendered because they messed up.

Let me explain, so basically we're playing ascension normally for "fun", and the enemy team starts intentionally feeding, refusing to attack us except to prevent us from grabbing relics. Then they forced xeraph, killed him, and walked away, giving the buffed to our Rakan. They then were just running around, and we couldn't figure out what they were doing.. trolling? Opening the game but making it hard? So we asked and they said "you'll see."

It then hit us... they were backing and buying items off of us killing them, and refusing to kill us and leave us with our starting items while they go full tank, and just camp the relics hitting us whenever we tried for them. They let us ascend because it made rakan even harder to die but rakan couldn't do anything to them after their "second back" with items.

This literally forced an endless game as neither of us could get relics as both of us had to just guard them, nobody could kill or get ascended because they left one of us ascended, and nobody could kill them because all we had was recurve bow vayne for 20 minutes vs. their 4 items.

So how did it end? Well nautilus and rammus made a huge mistake and bought a bami's cinder. So me and vayne hugged rammus and naut for about 15 minutes straight trying to kill ourselves so we could back and buy some items to maybe make us strong enough to kill them and take the relics while they're dead, actually only I was able to finally die because vayne was constantly headbutted by ali into health packs and bard+rakan accidentally healed her. Also pantheon ulted into shop and back into the map to try and help speed things up, by killing the tanks without bami's. When I died, I tried to buy as much pen., resist shred, and was hoping for extra %health.

They accidentally killed vayne because when they were ganging on my vayne was also next to me so they got some extra damage on her accidentally. Eventually forfeited because it was clear they messed up and we took advantage, and once I had items I could 1v2 which made relics free for the rest of us or they'd die to me and I'd take the relic.

Either way this was in no way a fun experience and if they didn't mess up, it would've been an instant loss for us and forced us to surrender, or stall endlessly until they got tired of it.

holy shit

this needs to be seen, but at the same no, if you get what I mean.

This is perfectly evil.

Trolling done right. A master piece even jhin would approve of.

SpecterVonBaren2 votes

So I assume you would approve of a four man premade trolling one of your games by feeding while you're stuck in a game that you can't do anything to win in nor speed up so you can move on?

statelesskiller1 votes

yes. if you beat me you beat me. any strategy is viable. if you know you cant win just FF.

SpecterVonBaren1 votes

So is the strategy of hacking the game or using scripts also something you think should be viable and encouraged?

Yrzen4 votes

That isn't a strategy. It's a shitty counterexample you use to compare playing differently to hacking.

Pacifist ascension is a strategy. It operates fully within the rules of the game, and unlike hacking and scripts, isn't stated to be bannable anywhere.

SpecterVonBaren1 votes

Strategy:_ a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim._

Or _ The art of planning and directing overall military operations and movements in a war or battle. _

The person I talked to said, " if you beat me you beat me. any strategy is viable." if ANY strategy is viable by his view then this includes outright cheating.

Also, this case should be banable because these people weren't trying to actually win. They could have started capturing points once they had gotten their significant item advantage but they didn't, they just kept preventing the enemy team from doing anything. They didn't do this to make a strategy on how to win the game, they did this to have fun at others expense.

statelesskiller2 votes

isnt trying to win in general having fun at others expense? i can name SOOOO many champions that are complete hell to lane against and are ZERO fun, but they still exist and are used because they allow you to win in such a rofl stomp way if you play them properly. complaining that a strat allows zero fun for the other team is like complaining that you keep getting one shot by a fed assassin, you lost to there strat, stop whining.

you seem to not understand the difference between strategy and cheating. strategy in a game is where you use the rules of the game to win. cheating is where you bend or outright break the rules of the game to win. guess which they are using? they are using the existing rules to win. sure they COULD win by doing other things. but they game mode doesnt force them to so why should they? they have a strat, it works. just because it ruins your fun doesnt make it bannable.

fix the game, dont punish the players

statelesskiller1 votes

to make my point actually clearer about having fun at others expense

this one guy is behind. he is like 2 levels behind his laner. he is farming under tower. 30 cs down. so what do you and your jungler decide to do? you gank him under tower and kill him. again. and again. and again. you graduate to killing him between towers. you dont take his tower just so that he loses even more cs and so you can kill him more.

what i just described is one of the MOST viable strats to winning a game. rek 1 person really hard. turn him into a potato. then turn him into a god damn lead weight for his team. this is THE most anti fun thing i have ever had happen to me. but you know what? i cant blame them. they are winning, its my fault for falling for it. i got over it. i didnt complain because "hurr durr they are ruining my fun"

SpecterVonBaren1 votes

There's a difference between wanting to win and someone else losing if you do, and wanting to see someone be miserable because that gives you joy.

The goal of these players WAS NOT to win using a different strategy. End of story. If that was their goal then they would have started capping capture points once they got a significant item advantage and closed out the game. This is not what they did, they didn't even TRY to actually win the game, they dragged it out until the people they were against said uncle and forfeited.

This is all not even considering the fact that anyone can look at this strategy and instantly tell that it's not how this mode is supposed to be played. Given that anyone can recognize this, instead of making a video that showed that this strategy can be done and talk about how Riot could do X or Y to make it no longer work.

If you see someone drop their wallet accidentally on the street, what is your first reaction to it? Do you call out to them and tell them they dropped it? Or do you say nothing and pick it up and take any money inside it?

They knew this was never intended to be a thing, they knew it would make the enemy team miserable, and they decided they enjoyed seeing the enemy team be miserable instead of actually wanting to win using this trick.

statelesskiller1 votes

well what you say is meaningless because riot agrees with me. those bans got reversed and riot is updating the game mode so that the enemy team cant use this strategy

Anags2 votes

Their strategy is within the rules of play.

Cheating through third party programs isnt.

You have no point or basis for your argument, sorry.

Yrzen1 votes

Hacking isn't a plan of action. It's a weapon.

I suppose this is semantics, but I wouldn't call "planning" to use a weapon a "strategy". It's not even a very good one, since this particular weapon can get you disqualified. After all, would you really be winning if you won the game but got banned?

From what few replays I've seen, they did start capturing points, but I don't know, maybe in ones you've seen, they stayed at 0 points the whole game. Regardless, if they play to win, there's no reason they should receive punishment. If this case should be bannable for whatever reason, they still shouldn't be banned, because it wasn't bannable at the time they did it. To say they should be banned anyway is the same principle as Riot deciding Tahm Kench is toxic to the game and banning anyone who ever played him.

Yrzen1 votes

No, but I assume you would, given how hard you're trolling right now with perhaps the worst false equivalency I have ever seen.

SpecterVonBaren1 votes

No, it isn't. The only difference is that one has you on the team with the trolls while this has you on the opposing team of the trolls.

Yrzen2 votes

It's a sad day when being beaten makes the entire enemy team "trolls".

The difference is that one causes you to be victim to sabotage by your own team while this is evidently a very effective strategy.

META is literally, "Most Effective Tactic Available". To get up in arms about a given strategy that fully operates within the rules of a game is no different from being angry that the enemy team opposes you. Riot can't ban strategies, and the bans for people doing this were evidently a mistake, as a Rioter has already commented.

Chembaron Yamada2 votes

They don't "beat" the other team, though. All they do is taking the enemy team hostage in a game which can't be ended as long as they stick to their plan.

They don't try to win the game by hitting the actual goal of the game. They just stall out the game to infinity until the enemy team is tired of it and surrenders.

They found a weakness in the game structure and are abusing it in a way this game is not supposed to be played. That is pretty much the definition of an "exploit". Yes, you are just using how the game works. But you are abusing an overlooked weakness in the system and using it to force victories in a way that is not intended.

These guys got a ban for doing this and it is justified in my opinion.

Anags2 votes

So tell riot to fix the game mode.

That is the only solution. They should have just left it as dominion imo.

Yrzen2 votes

An overlooked weakness in the system used to force victories is completely on Riot.

I grant that they seem to not take objectives immediately, and if they're intentionally not taking objectives, then sure, that's unhealthy.

However, banning them or even punishing them for that would be creating an ex post facto law. (A law that not only makes something illegal, but punishes people for doing that something which was completely legal) Ex post facto rules in private companies (they're illegal in most governments) are pretty much a huge middle finger to the clientele. It's like deciding that Jinx is toxic to the game and banning anyone who ever played Jinx.

If, however, they do take objectives properly, then there's no reason they should have any punishment, now or in the future. It's Riot's responsibility to stop this from being a viable strategy, not the responsibility of the playerbase.

Trolling done right. A master piece even jhin would approve of.

Technically not trolling, as it is a strategy used to win. :)

Pie Cubed16 votes

Actually just go for Tahm Kench if you're afraid of this strategy. You can send an ally back with you.

Tormentula6 votes

That's assuming we're accounting for the strategy, its not exactly draft pick in Ascension and you really can't draft ban the strat since on paper it could work with any champion.

There are disgusting strats like the kayle+yi korean boost strat, but in draft pick you have the chance to shut that down if you see through it in the draft. Blind pick Ascension, not so much, and even so, at least that strategy has outcomes unlike this one.

Targon1 votes

Does this work with Ryze too?

Pie Cubed2 votes

It should. But I think the range is less. I've used Tahm ult for clutch getaways and for someone with loads of gold.

InstaPoppy2 votes

It does, i use this start a lot, you don't heal in spawn or get mana but you can buy items.

SpecterVonBaren1 votes

They may have changed it but I remember trying this once and it doesn't work, as soon as you pop up at base you just get ported back to where you were.

Pie Cubed1 votes

I played it recently. Base didn't heal you and stuff, but you could shop then TP back.

Friendly Ram14 votes

not sure whether to applaud their evil genius or want to report them for being complete assholes.

Riot actually started suspending people's accounts after using this "pacifist" strategy on Ascension: https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/6s8868/is_there_counterplay_to_the_pacifist_ascension/

Taz the Kitsune8 votes

I never though like that... and that is op.... wow they really though that out... just the item mistake....

DuskDaUmbreon8 votes

That's...brilliant. Evil, but brilliant.

As others have said, you can bring someone able to kill themselves or their teammate, such as Tahm.

Or you could likely have just ran at the relics. You'd have died eventually.

Tormentula4 votes

Well picking would've been assuming we're accounting for a playstyle like this to happen.

As for running at the relics, the issue was they were tapping us and because they were tanks we actually regened most of the damage they would deal. For instance: Rakan's passive was a constant shield, vayne had bloodlust so when she tapped them for doing the relic she was forced to heal, pantheon's passive blocked autos, and bards regen was just naturally high. Elise (me) was the only one that really could die from that as my only form of healing would've been spider form autos, which I refrained from doing eventually, but still my regen was enough to the point I barely "profited" in taken more damage then regening from udyr.

HalcyonDweller7 votes

That sucks dude, I'm sorry you had to deal with it.

In cases like that I would just afk, you can move around a bit. But if you don't do anything it will stop being fun for them.

Fuck people like that. Using the game to trap you and ruin your fun.

If it ever happens again, you should just AFK and submit a support ticket appealing the incoming punishment, explaining what happened. I suspect that Riot Support would be sympathetic to your situation and lift any punishment you might have received.

Tormentula6 votes

Well afking wouldn't have been much of an option since unlike rift there is no constantly pushing waves that eventually end the game, surrendering would be the only way out, but it became more of a pride issue.. "do we let these assholes succeed in ruining our day and let them think it works to make other people miserable? They're not losing anything but time if we afk."

I don't think this is reportable since its not even a toxic player issue (in comparison, a fizz player could be as reportable) but just a toxic playstyle that should be addressed to prevent it from happening again. I don't know how that could be fixed, but it needs to be some how because one of my favorite game modes instantly became a "never play again" one off of knowing the fact this strategy exist... me and my premade had to take an hour break after that garbage and went on smite...

Afking if I ever see this again is an option, but if I wanted to waste precise time sitting in fountain I'd just go into ranked. I'm legitmately staying out of Ascension til something is done.

I guess the reason why Ascension is the victim of this strat is because other gamemodes either have ways to suicide for items (fountain lazers for nexus siege, dominion, blood moon, aram and poro, hexakill, etc) or they have something that can't be easily stopped (like scuttles or hooks in dark star). All Ascension has is xeraph and once it's taken nothing can be done.

HalcyonDweller10 votes

They misused the game's mechanics, with the intent of ruining your experience. They even went so far as to AVOID trying to win, in order to drag it out longer and toy with you more. The only victory they would accept was by making you surrender with your soul crushed.

I think that more than qualifies as toxic, at the very least it's extremely unsportsmanlike. It would be like playing soccer/futbol, but just passing the ball back and forth between your teammates and never trying to get a goal, just trying to play keep away with the ball.

It takes a special type of shitbag to do that to 5 other people. You and your teammates did not deserve to be put through that experience.

LatetotheRace6 votes

That's honestly hilarious. Not for you, but their strat is genius

Khorgoth5 votes

Luckily, the game mode is so rarely ever around that I'm sure you won't have to worry about this again.

Meanwhile I'm really missing Legend of the Poro King, it feels as though it's been 3 weeks 3 years since we've seen it.

Targon3 votes

I would hate to be on the receiving end of this strategy.

Aeszarck3 votes

I think it's such a stupid strategy and makes the game frustrating to the point where it shouldn't be allowed. When I think of a game of Ascension, I don't think of the words "hostage situation." Nor should I. A game of League should be fun and players shouldn't be forced into playing an infinite game. Players shouldn't be forced to surrender just to end a game they're in. A game shouldn't be lost at Champion Select where you only have a chance if you play Champions who can teleport back to spawn. Whoever does this loses any respect from me. It's scummy and makes people want to tear their hair out.

I think one way to fix this would be to allow players to recall at any of the three spawn points.

Sally Polly2 votes

Oh, they think they were trolling? Backfire those b****. Simply stay put and dont do anything. Don't even run around. Stay there.. alt tab.. and wait until the message about being afk pop.. move a bit and back afk. Eventually they'll think they were trolling but with no fun.

Although it was funny that they actually thought about it.

Pale Pirate2 votes

They didn't ban pantheon? Well, they didn't do it good then. They took this strategy from here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8Fw-zwDdbw It was publicized by vandiril, invented by the guys who are doing it there I suppose.

Samura Yukisuna2 votes

Oh, finally a post from the other perspective of this issue! I've been trying so hard to explain why this exploit IS indeed a bad thing...

Your pantheon was pretty damn smart, to ult into base. Well done!

Knalxz1 votes

The obvious flaw of that strat is, you can only only attack someone so much before they just die even as a noodle tank, just don't pick up the health shrines.

AwesomeGuyDj3 votes

they werent attacking. Only bami's and they regened more than bamis could do.

Zerenza1 votes

Exactly, the only reason the strategy failed was because someone bought Bami's cinder. If they never bought bami's cinder, if Pantheon never used his ult to get back to base, then the game would go on forever until one team gave up. The most you could hope for was that Xerath would execute you, but at that point it's already to late.

AwesomeGuyDj1 votes

? the entire strategy revolves around bamis. Its enough it wont kill them, but enough to stop them from capping relics.

Tormentula1 votes

Not at all. Bamis actually did more then we regened (and it actually did more then their auto attacks). The only reason we could win was because of the bamis doing enough, however in the time window between starting relics their autos were easily regenerated before the next. Difference between autos and bamis is bamis is constant damage.
