Pre-Season 6 Supports Who is good now (may change later in season w/ patches) -minor tips too-
The meta has shifted a lot with the new season. With the ADC buffs, the role of support has changed accordingly with the new meta.
The types of supports that flourish Early/Mid game are influenced heavily by the new Masteries. I have noticed that ranged AP (Ability Power) based supports flourish in the new meta. Tanky Supports were "all the rage" in season 5, but the new ADC's(and APC's) have the ability to MELT tanks -AD (Attack Damage)- .
The Supports that I have been doing well with are supports such as
,
,
, and
.
This is because of their high poke damage early game. The new sets of masteries were not 100% dedicated to support roles. However, they were more geared toward HIGH damage output. Yes, there are some masteries geared for tanks/tanking, but the problem is that even tanks will be incinerated this pre-season (in my opinion). For this reason, a support is now able to fulfil their role as a support early game, but transition into a damage output in the mid/late game.
Some other supports that I can see going well in this new meta include
,
,
,
,
,
(Nidalee may be a little tricky, but can be a "niche" support that can scale well into the late game)
Items?
START with a
to get a TON of gold from poking down your enemies. Personally, I don't like
so I have been building it into
.
Supports that **may **do really well in this new meta and may be completely **off-meta **include
,
,
,
,
,
.
DISCLAMER: If you use these off-meta champs as supports, watch some youtube videos to see how other people use them. Also, if you begin to lose, your team may blame your **off-meta pick for the loss.
**If you are looking for counter play to these bursty/poke supports, there are some counters that will help you win lane and later phases of the game.
In my opinion, A great counter-pick to these AP burst/poke supports would be a
. Blitzcrank is very versatile in the fact that he can either be a "Burst-crank" (full AP) or a "Blitz-tank (Tanky)". In most cases, the AP burst/poke supports are squishy and immobile like Sona, Annie, Nami, Lulu(pre lvl 5), and more. Blitz's "pull" can literally destroy a Sona (if his ADC follows up) in one pull. This is an easy early game counter. But since Blitz can built into "Burst-crank", AP items will work really well with him. Mid/late game, he can get kills by himself if he wants to(with some exceptions, like a fed Irelia or Darius). On the other hand, If you team is in need of more team fight sustainability, then you may want to build tanky. "Blitz-tank" will fit that need rather well. Make sure to build defense items that a are helpful to your situation. If the other team is mostly AD, it would be better to buy a
or
. If the other team has a lot of mages or AP based champs buy a
or
. If you their team is balanced between the two, or you don't know what to buy,
,
and
, will be safe choices for a tanky build.
If you want to experiment with going hybrid, an item that I think would go well would be a
that is built into an
. I say this because Blitz's passive give him a shield based on his max mana (which can be increased by 1,000 from this item) and the active of the item gives him another shield (more tanky-ness). It also gives 80AP which will give him a damage boost on his pull.
WARNING: Blitz is countered by some AP supports like Morgana (because of her Black Shield). So other viable supports that can counter these AP damage supports include -but are not limited to- ...

This is pre-season, so try out some "wacky" things, and see if they stick.
If you would like to know more about support stuff, I have another post that may help even though it was for Season 5. A lot of the basics are still true, but keep in mind that there have been some drastic changes in the way supporting is.

top a "tank".
