Do counters actually exist? What's the point of the concept?

So I understand the whole concept of the "counter-pick" but I've always wondered why people treat it like you're going to lose if you get countered. The way I see it, this game comes down to knowing. The more you know the more likely you are to win through out-plays, out farming, punishing mistakes etc... The question I pose is why do people in the elo I'm currently in treat this concept like it's a religion?

P.S. I figured this would go into the gameplay section but I'm not 100% sure because I rarely use the forums.

counters make a difference, but aren't 100%. you can beat a counter in lane if they play it badly or you play it really well. people give counters too much credit sometimes though and forget about personal skill and experience.

Counters are never meant to be treated so seriously. Unless it is something like malphite vs tryndamere, which is blatantly in immense favor of malphite.

Counter picking just makes match ups easier so you can get more farm than if you don't counter pick. That's my personal opinion there is lots of different opinions out there on why it helps.

To use one of my FAVORITE match-ups as an example, when I'm Urgot and I see a Teemo? I get positively giddy. My passive means his stealth, and blind are both useless, and I can just bully him out of lane.

If one characters kit completely negates the enemy, that is a hard counter.

There's favorable matchups and unfavorable matchups. Most are truly whether you can best the opponent with said advantage or disadvantage, while there are almost none that are truly impossible of winning. Also there's playing to a champs strengths to overcome their weaknesses, don't forget.
