There are a lot of things that go into it, and Rito's already said they won't explain it exactly.

Most common thing I see people ignore is CS. This has a really huge impact from what I can tell. I can go mid and get 1/3/1, 220 CS at 20 minutes and get an A+. If I go 3/1/3 with 100 CS at 20, I'd be lucky to get an A-, likely more like a B. CS expectations ARE role-specific, though. Junglers need fewer creeps than laners, supports need fewer than that.

Things I'm confident impact your rating:

  • KDA
  • CS
  • Kill Participation

Things I think impact your rating (but not sure):

  • Damage Dealt
  • Damage Taken
  • Towers Destroyed
  • Monsters killed in enemy jungle

This is a top lane game I got S rank for.

KDA - 6/5/0 CS - 174 after 31 minutes Kill Participation - 12% Damage Dealt - 10k Damage Taken - No idea, but everybody was fighting without me. Tower Destroyed - 2. Monsters killed in the enemy jungle - 3, one Red Buff camp.

In other words, "I call bullshit".

Dunno what to tell you. I obviously can't say that what I said was right for sure, but those things together have been very good predictors of score for me. In my own games, I can typically guess quite accurately what score I'll get based on that information. I play quite a bit, and I can't remember the last time I was more than 1 tier off- that is, I predict an S and actually get an S-.

That could be a result of the way I play- there could be other factors that I simply don't encounter- but if so, I don't know what they are because... I've never encountered them. Or perhaps more accurately, because I always score the same on those metrics, and only the other metrics change (for me personally).

I'm with the OP but Darkwinds explanation does make sense. I mean I had a 15/1/4 match with Yorick and got an A...then I had a match as a supp (naut or blitz I don't remember) and went around 4/6/18 and got an S.

So yah the system is weird I guess it goes by your role I guess.

Riot how exactly does the Mastery scoring work??

Riot specifically stated they aren't letting anyone know exactly how it works so it can't be exploited. Riot has also stated grading works in several ways to counter people exploiting how it works to game the system.

How it works in general is that if you pick, say, Annie support you are then compared to all the Annie supports in your region and graded based on how well you did vs. everyone else playing Annie support.

What exactly Riot is comparing in their formula is up for debate, but seeing as they don't have to show off a sleek and sexy tooltip or easily digestible explanation: the math involved is probably pretty complex, and the stats compared are clearly more than just your K/D ratio. KDA at the very least is taken into account along with CS, and it's quite likely things like kill-participation, warding, and game length are all considered as well.

I'm not so sure that damage delt matters. I had the second most damage delt with lux mid and I managed to go 22/6/18 and I only got an A. But our ADC had the second least damage delt and his score was 5/3/10 yet he got an S. I think the whole system is messed up and needs reworked.

it's based on how many towers you take, kills you get, deaths, assists, CS, and your position, dragons, barons. and time length

it's telling if you are a team player basically

easy way to get S or S+, is do something people don't do, like I got a ton of S+ when I was AP amumu jg cause most build tank, so my CS was higher than usual, kills and assists were higher

ok cool just needed to know the basics of how it worked because I know I played one game of rengar and went like 4/6 ( I suck at rengar) and somehow got an S so I was so confused on its general ways
