Its been a few months since the Mage Update, so whats the state of Malzahar nowadays?

Malzahar was my first main and the first champion I really fell in love with, I mained him for 3 seasons before the rework but now that he's been changed I barely play him anymore. He still has a similar kit but the shift of focus to his voidlings while removing power from almost every aspect of his kit killed what made him fun for me. I loved how strong he was in 1v1 fights, even at the expense of his team fight pressure. Now his ult damage is so pathetic and his trademark space aids aren't even strong enough to use as waveclear without his voidlings, which imo are still too easy to get rid of for how much of a focus they are in his kit.

I'll admit he's still strong if played correctly but he's just not as fun as he used to be imo.

So now that people have had time to settle into the mage updates and figure out what works best I want to know how other people view the state of Malzahar . He was instaban when the rework first came out but now he seems to be on most peoples back-burner once again.

hes a W bot. his Q is meh damage compared to his old Q. his E . does no damage until the absolute late game where you have a lot of ap and item 3151 . also still most of the damage is from his W. and his ult is basically a stand still so his W does damage.

such a poor rework

they reduced the damage of Q, E and R and placed it all into W so pray to satan you won't be facing a sivir who just kills them leaving you with no damage.

but to be serious he's in a boring place, all his damage got put into his W which for me makes his playstyle boring.

Mained Malzahar since S4 when I started playing.

I loved how each of his spells were independent of each other, yet were still individually strong.

I felt pretty apprehensive about his update when they came out with news on what his changes were.

When I finally played his new kit a few times after his update...

It felt like the enemy laner was interacting more with Malzahar than I was.

The amount of mind-numbing spell combos that Malzahar was forced to employ literally made me either light-headed or gave me a headache. Although looking back on it now, that could have been subconsious heartache.

Eventually I just stopped playing him.

I main Veigar now... But I still don't have that feeling of control or that feeling that I can take on the world when I play ranked.

TL;DR I hate him now.

He has quite a few bad match ups now, feels incomplete to play until you get Rylai's which seems to restrain his power budget because of how stupidly powerful it is. He's most reliable as an assassin counterpick but can still be stopped by item 3111 item 3155 item 3140. He became a late game mage, and by that I don't mean run around and kill people like Veigar or Syndra. Most of the time he's just an ult bot for the highest priority enemy that doesn't have a cleanse. One thing's for sure, while he can disrupt very well with Rylai's and deal immense damage during teamfights with a well used E, he likely won't kill many people by himself.

He is about the same as pre-rework. Mainly used to counter Assassins hard.

Aside from the boost on the voidling damage all they did with Malzahar's R damage was place it onto W so now you have to pool to deal similar damage to before. I haven't played him in a couple of months though.
