Melee vs ADC top, advice needed.

The champs that bully me on top are Vayne, Tristana and Varus. The higher into tier I go the more of them I can see.

Hello everyone I just would like to ask top laners how do you guys play against ranged and pretty much skilled adc players on top lane. Some stuff I'm doing to help myself. I start with Doran's shield. Not engaging till I get my 3 abilities up. I let them push so I can get ganks.

As for the ganks you are dependand on your jung or midlaner because it's not assured that the jg will come for the gank. They are strangers idk what their plan is. Which top tanky champion can fight this match up? I ve moved to plat 4 currently due to me dominating my lane and pushing other lanes ahead with ganks.

Should I change my playstyle due to me maining mostly team fighters and tanks? I could always pick a warden with global ult and try to swing the odds on some other lane.

What they do is that they keep me in check and cant go out of control.

Otherwise im cursed into hugging my tower. Thank you and cheers!

Honestly, unless you're playing a champ that can actually jump onto them and beat them, you're stuck to tower hugging duty

Basically the best thing you can do is not die to them and pray your JG cares about you, besides that you arent winning unless they make mistakes

Focus a bit of armor first, even if you're a champ who normally goes BC/Tri as your first item, getting armor early on will at least let you stay in lane longer and reduce their harass a bit

item 1054 + Second Wind. Makes this shit much less painful.

And no, don't pick a Warden, they get fucked harder by ranged tops.

Yorick counters ranged champions.

Here are some numbers on it from lolalytics for world wide Plat+ games:

  • 59% win rate against Ryze top
  • 55% win rate against Teemo top
  • 56% win rate against Vayne top
  • 56% win rate against Lucian top
  • 58% win rate against Jayce top
  • 55% win rate against Heimerdinger top
  • 57% win rate against Cassiopeia top
  • 54.8% win rate against Gnar top
  • 54% win rate against Urgot top
  • 54% win rate against Kennen top

Quinn is an outlier that he has 49% win rate against. Likely it is less her winning the match up and more her roaming having more impact on average than Yorick 's pushing.

Just keep in mind that just playing a champion that should win a match up is not enough. You still have to play out the lane correctly. And on that point, if you watch GM/challenger players (that main/one trick champions that struggle in these match ups) when they do an unranked to challenger series, you will see they often have ways of taking advantage of plat/low diamond players to get an advantage in these match ups.

Play Mordekaiser . His Ult is the only thing that allows you to win vs them because they cant run away.

Best tank to deal with those is Shen and Maokai. Irelia, Renekton, and Kled can also do well enough.

Go doran's shield, grasp of undying, second wind key stone, and teleport. Give up CS to not get poked down too much and soak xp, prep the wave so your jungler can gank for you. If he doesn't, you have to give up turrets and make teleport plays across the map.

Rush tabis, into sunfire cape, into warmogs. Once laning phase is over, you are much more useful in teamfights and objectives.

You will rarely win lane against a good Vayne or Quinn, you just have to not feed them in the process.

I mean, just duo que with a jungler is all you can really do. If its a 1v1 with a ranged you normally lose unless you have smting like Irelia Akali

If its an adc like Varus you can all in him once your 3 if he doesnt poke you down too much but if im being honest, Vayne is pretty much the outlier here you cant beat her in a 1v1 throughout the game.

As a summary, bait the escape abilities and engage before they come off cd, if its Vayne Tristana youve pretty much lost lane unless they're playing on 500 ms, then you have a 67% chance to beat them

Hi im 121/2/2020, 1:40:56 PM2 votes

skarner, ornn, malphite, if you got counterpicked just wait to outscale em and try to tp / cooperate with jungler trist is too aids with no counterplay though so not much there

Arammus1/2/2020, 5:36:59 AM2 votes

ban vayne pick something with a gap closer (lets take one of the strongest top laners as example, irelia) get sheen get item 3082 press q + aa on them. watch half their hp bar disappear and them running away in fear.

ProphetOfDraven1/2/2020, 5:52:48 AM2 votes

You gotta play champions with gap closers into ADC's. For tanks if it's not vayne, Ornn is pretty good against them. For bruisers Aatrox and Irelia are your best bet.

IRight ArmI1/2/2020, 9:34:28 AM2 votes

Hide in bush and move out to cs or if they ward it. With ranged matchup you have to all in them use everything you can to kill them. Don't be scared of their range it's their only asset against you and it's vital for them to keep it.

I play Tryndamere top and I do still ahve ttourble with quin and ryze but I am confident against teemo or vayne.

If you're in low elo, you don't really need to worry about ADC's because their positioning isn't that great. You just got to trade well and punish them when out of position. With Darius, three rejuvenation bead start will help with the poke. Rush boots and armor. With Tristana, you can't really do anything because she just jumps away. Boring to lane against, nobody dies in lane, its just a farming lane. Vayne plays more like a duelist than an ADC. If her Condemn is down, that is a good time to go in. Actually, whenever an ADC top uses their escape/knockback, that is a good time to go in. If they have Press the Attack, use the brush for cover. Only go all in if you can kill. Don't let them control the brush, the brush is a melee champ's friend. Only thing I hate about ADC top is its a lot harder to deny them cs. They can poke and farm safely. Freezing isn't as effective against ADC since they can just poke you under tower.

If you're in high elo, you kinda just need to switch champions. Way too much effort playing melee into range. Defense items aren't good enough and bruisers don't scale well enough. Bruiser items are also extremely expensive. Don't play juggernauts into range. Tanks are also not great picks in this meta. Champs like Camille or Irelia are probably way better since they can gap close.

I love when adc comes toplane. I rush item 3075 and they basicly killing themselves.

QuZeed YT1/2/2020, 3:50:29 PM1 votes

Idk, if you play Aatrox just move to jungle xD

destroyer227191/2/2020, 8:00:28 PM1 votes

Honestly, the best advice I can give to you is to just hide in the bush. Hiding in the bush can greatly limit their poke and harass. Some champions are actually really good against ranged champions in top lane.

ESPECIALLY Irelia

spookdegrace1/2/2020, 6:31:42 AM1 votes

Rush tabi. Last hit with abilities and let them shove. Then, try and catch them under your tower so even when they try to run they have a long way to go and can't get away. Remember, they have very low base health and armor compared to you so you win most trades very quickly. Also their abilities usually don't do much damage (besides trist E if stacked). If you get on top of one they can't get away. Picking renekton or Darius or yorrick or mordekaiser into a ranged champ should be free for you, since they're dead if you catch them.

Tin Obliterates1/3/2020, 12:43:31 AM1 votes

Aatrox could work against it, though if Vayne can predict how you play and saves her condemn for when you try to reposition your Q with E you might have a hard time.

LegacyDAP1/5/2020, 6:31:09 PM1 votes

You don't win trades versus ranged unless you're near the bushes or you have a way to disengage so you're not supposed to trade but all-in. Just limit test more when you're in the matchups and watch vods of other people playing melee vs ranged from melee point of view.

RlTO lS TOXIC1/3/2020, 4:19:37 PM1 votes

The higher u go the more adc top is troll and auto lose for the team having one. You either rush ninja tabi and kill them once with your jg, then grow a pair and all in them over and over once you have a lead. Or you could just play a mage top to outland and outscale them.

Sire Hippington1/3/2020, 7:25:00 PM1 votes

Well, unless you have a champ that can realistically all-in them, there are only two options: Towerhug and hope for ganks, or toam/TP to impact other lanes. In most cases, survivring is enough cause toplane adc rarly fit well into the teamcomp so they get trouble in the mid-late. What's alot worse are mages like kennen or neeko, huge teamfight ults and still just as annoying to deal with in lane as adc, they just don't fall off if they land a good ult.

If you want a tank that can take it to most ranged champs, Orn does work well for me. He can punish mistakes past lvl 2 alread(start Q for ranged CS, then E for the Q->E combo if they overstep) and his lvl 6 all in is pretty insane. Only real issue is vayne, and she usually falls of a cliff in the midgame as their comp usually doesn't work for teamfights, and she's to vulnerable to splitpush.

Cho is nice aswell, high sustain and past 6, if you land Q it's basically a kill.

Gragas also works, though he's better off as a bruiser/mage than as tank.

DuskDaUmbreon1/2/2020, 6:41:51 AM1 votes

Vayne is short-range and can do very little in a 1v2. She will die to every gank done by a jungler that at least makes a half-hearted attempt. She's also completely fucked if you have decent damage and a gap closer. A good Darius will beat the shit out of her by running ghost instead of TP or ignite. Malphite also beats the everloving shit out of her. Nasus, despite not having a gap closer, absolutely dominates her with a 56+% winrate against her - I assume this is due to his W removing all of her damage and his passive letting him sustain most of her bullshit. Shen also probably wins that matchup.

If you aren't a champion that can beat her normally, the best thing to do is to try to avoid her W procs and get your jg to help. Any half-competent jungler will know solo Vayne is easy as fuck to kill.

Varus has zero ability to escape. I don't have accurate counter data for him, since he has a grand total of 27 matches, but I assume a lot of the same stuff applies - If you get on top of him with someone who has good damage he's going to die. He'll also probably die pretty hard to a gank as well. Try and dodge arrows and bait his ult before going in.

Tristana is...much more slippery. She also has very few matches, unfortunately, but it looks like the champions who beat her are ones with pulls and ones who can just lock her down easily. Darius, Ornn, and Irelia beat her pretty hard.

Against any ranged toplaner, take second wind and doran's shield, and try to pick up a corrupting potion quickly.
