How does the Ranking system work?

So I am confused on how the ranking works. Can anyone explain it to me? This season I went 2 Wins and 8 Loses, but I was placed in Silver 5. My friend went 3 Wins and 7 Loses and he got placed in Bronze 4. The year before that he won 9 games but lost 1 and ended up in Bronze 5. Please can anyone explain how this works? (And for a 3rd time I have to post this even though its a help question but for some reason riot hates me and deleted my same post and doesn't care for my question and will not answer it. But they will tell me, "Hey, you put it in the wrong area." for a question.. Why would this be in gameplay? I understand but still a question though. Sorry about the rage I just hate getting my post deleted for stupid reasons. I just hope this doesn't get deleted a 4th time because of reasons.) I JUST WANT ANSWERS!

Placement will be based primarily on your prior standing if you have ranked before. If you trashed your MMR you can get a lower placement next season even if you win more of your placement matches than this time, and inversely, the higher you raise your MMR this season the better you'll place next season even if you do worse. It's important to note that each season players who were ranked will be subject to a 'soft MMR reset' and will almost always place lower than the rank they were in the prior season.

Someone who has not ranked before will be given a fresh MMR that is something like low-mid Silver, so can place better with fewer wins than someone who had worse MMR than that from their previous rank. Unranked players also aren't subject to the soft reset of course.

to sum it up, your VERY first ranked season will place you in bronze silver or gold.

any ranked season after that will LOWER your elo unless you win all 10.
