The current high-damage jungle and dedicated jungle items seem to reduce diversity in the jungle.

The nature of jungle items effectively pigeon-holes Junglers into a small selection of items, and I do not see a good reason for it.

Laners could be deterred from the jungle by a passive element on Smite similar to what currently exists, and while it would be unorthodox Smite could be made to be upgraded directly rather than requiring an item.

I just don't see a good reason for Jungler to be effectively forced into a different set of items for their first core item.

And a damaging jungle, obviously, greatly limits the champions that can jungle: though not all that could in the easier jungle of the past were neccessarilly optimal.

Overall both decisions seem to limit player creativity and put all jungle strategies in a box of sorts.

The funny thing is Riot said the preseason jungle would be easier when in fact it's harder. Not only do you need a champ with sustain but now you need a champ with fast clear speed or you fall behind in levels. This limits which champs are good in jungle to an even smaller selection.
