Thoughts Concerning Stealth

With all the recent controversy surrounding stealth champions (Rengar in particular currently) I thought that I'd put in my two cents on the subject.

Stealth in general within League has always been fairly cut and dry, you either see someone, or you don't. As we can see by the general feeling of the community on the boards, this isn't going to cut it if we want Stealth to be a healthy part of the game.

In my opinion, there should be two kinds of stealth:

  • Cloaked - League's all purpose Stealth. More of a "Soft Stealth" than anything, as it doesn't make you invisible to the naked eye. Cloaked champions are not targetable, but distort the area they move through, allowing those with keen eyes to pick up on the presence of such Champions. This effect could scale relative to the nearest enemy Champion, making it more apparent the closer you become, until you are close enough to be completely revealed. This kind of stealth could be put on an item's active, or a support's ability, and still be reasonable. Evelynn and Rengar would be staple users of this form of Stealth. Twitch and Wukong would also use this form of stealth.

  • Invisible - League's specialized stealth. An absolute concealment from the eye, it's more powerful than the former because there is no indication of the Champion's presence, and as such it should be used sparingly. Abilities like Talon's ultimate, Kha'Zix's evolved Ultimate (giving incentive to evolve it), or Shaco's Deceive would be Invisibility effects, instead of Cloaks.

By differentiating these two forms of stealth, I feel like it could bring the ability as a whole into a more healthy area. This doesn't solve Rengar's 100-0 issue, but I feel like it would be a reasonable change.

BONUS ROUND:

  • Pink Ward - Instead of providing flat True Sight, like towers do, it should reveal wards within it's area, and act as a champion for the purpose of "Cloaked" champions, and apply the same effect against Invisible ones, while revealing all units detected by the effect on the minimap. This way Pink Wards don't completely screw over stealthed champions by making them targetable, but still provide sufficent information to the team that places them.

  • Sweeper - Doubles the "decloaking" effect of enemies in the area of the sweeper. Allows you to spot enemies twice as fast, though you must still be close to them to reveal them, so it's not a hard counter, though the current system we have is fairly good.

Regarding the vision game in general abilities like Grave's smoke screen should act like brush, if you're outside it you can't see through it, but if you're inside it you can see out, though maybe at reduced range. I feel like this would make that ability in particular more fair to both sides (it would block sight for both teams in this version.) Nocturne's Dusk Trail could act similarly, giving it an interesting utility.

It would be cool to apply this effect to the Blue trinket Wards (with sufficient other options to upgrade our yellow trinkets). Enemies can't see into the area the Blue Ward covers, however they can see out of it if they're inside the zone the Blue Ward covers, and obviously you can still kill it with a single basic attack. Wards within the Blue Ward's range will act as normal. Changing this from being a vision tool to becoming a vision denial tool could be an interesting change to the game, though I suspect this kind of change won't be made for quite a while yet.

What are your ideas concerning stealth and the vision game as we know it?

For the Graves part, no way. It's supposed to be the opposite of brush - enemies in it can't see out, you and your team who are outside can see in.

shrug it's just a thought. The name of the ability is what triggered the idea, as smokescreens (as they're generally portrayed) are often used to prevent sight into an area, it seems strange to me, when I thought about it, that you could see through a cloud of smoke so thick you can't see out of it.

It would be really weird though... using it as cover for yourself is bad because they know ur probably in it... but then you could bait abilities... but it'd be super risky and just flat out weird.

The primary reason I brought up Graves' smokescreen in particular is because it's been called a problem ability by Riot (can't remember the source, and too lazy to look it up) when it comes to vision denial.

The main thing that I think would make the ability interesting is that it would block vision behind the smokescreen, as well as those inside, unless you had vision in there via minions or something. It might not be very useful in the early game during lane, but it could be a powerful tool later on in my opinion. It definately doesn't convey the current feeling of the ability though, you're completely right.

Back when Riot was considering quality changes to stealth and detection, I shared a lot of ideas, but they made it clear that they couldn't give up the ward system and marginalized stealth with Twitch and Evelyns changes.

Things like cloaking would be a great mediocre stealth that's more vulnerable to skill shots.

Beyond that, I had hoped they would add more subtle forms of detection which allowed players to challenge stealth without completely negating it. Warning systems that notify you that your being stalked workout revealing invisible units, radar taking m tracking similar to Rek Sai which would show you an opponents location without revealing revealing them, and more abilities which interact with and counter stealth in general so they are naturally weak to some foes while strong against others.

Unfortunately, Riot serves the meta, we aren't going to see anything creative because they can't change the status quo.

That's a shame to hear. I really hope they change their stance on this. It's good to hear this has been at least mentioned in some form before though.

Riot pretends at a lot of things, but they let the Meta dictate the game to them, their not going to do anything significant except add unnecessary champions to their bloated selection.

They should have just made more parallel modes so players can choose alternatives.
